The Coyotes have been up and down but based on the way that some of the other Summit teams have come out of the gate this year it will not be easy to exceed or even match last years 4th (tied) place finish in the conference. The Jacks look unstoppable so far. Western Illinois is off to a great start. Oral Roberts, Denver, NDSU, IPFW and Omaha all look good to start the year.
I noticed on the schedule that Omaha is playing at Minnesota today and I give the Mavericks a fighting chance in this game. Omaha leads 25-23 in the first half so they are holding their own.

Omaha played them tough only losing 93-90. Minnesota missed a few free throws down the stretch to help out the Mavericks but Omaha could not get the tying basket. The Summit is gonna be tough this year.

Have not paid much attention thus far, but did watch Western Illinois top Wisconsin to start the season. Dead last in the Summit last year and now looking very good. Quite the turnaround.

I know this is not the Summit League but two common opponents matched up and Milwaukee won at Minnesota 74-65. It's gonna get ugly in Minneapolis and they haven't even started the Big 10 yet. No way in a million years would I trade Craig Smith for Richard Petino. Being a season ticket holder at Williams Arena is and will not be fun this season.

Bad winter all around for men's sports at the U of M. Don Lucia is ready to get lynched as the Gopher hockey team stinks this season too. The guy has won a couple of national titles and was just in the championship game as recently as a couple of seasons ago. Still, I predict there will be a new man behind the bench at the start of next season.

The U or M for whatever reason just can't get that sports department right. Football has been a grease fire for most of the last 50 years. Basketball is so up and down, but mostly down since the Haskins era. Hockey is such a huge sport that they should be competing for a national title practically every year. Luckily when Vanek was with them they cashed in on his excellence with him. Other than the back to back titles it's been pretty dry for winning even with their hockey program since the late 70's. They do and should have a high standard for the hockey program so many would consider them under achievers.

It's easy to look at scheduling as the scapegoat but how about those other programs outside the top 2 or 3 just simply get better. What good will it do if IPFW and Denver ramp up their schedules. They will lose almost all of their tough games that they play. Once a team gets to SDSU's or USD's level than the scheduling become a bigger issue. I don't know why people talk about strength of schedule so much because it is strength of victories that should mean more. Anyone can play 10 of the top 20 teams in the country lose all 10 games and brag out their schedule but what really would be accomplished. It's not who you schedule as much as how you play the schedule that is given.
For USD the biggest reason that they didn't make the NCAA tournament is their performance in early games against UNI, Kansas State and Utah. The team simply did not pick up their game soon enough to put together a good enough resume to get in. It would have been a tall task but had the Coyotes even won 2 of those games they would have been a 4 loss team and would have been very hard to skip over with that kind of record.
Let's say USD would have scheduled tougher and had 3 extra tough games against top 25 programs. Most likely those games would have occurred earlier in the season and the Coyotes would have probably lost all 3. Now they have a tougher schedule but also 9 losses instead of 6. I think it has been proven that a team from a conference such as the Summit with 6 losses is every bit as good as a major conference program that finished in the middle of the pack and ends up with 10-12 losses.

Why are top-25 wins the only benchmark? 64-25=39. The top-25 doesn't even make up half of the tournament field

The top-25 doesn't even make up half of the tournament field Because top-25 wins stand out compared to other wins especially when you play in a top heavy Summit League. A lot of teams in the Summit play non D1 games during the regular season. There is no reason for that in the women's game where scheduling games isn't that big of an issue compared to the men's side. That is not helping the league out.

Scheduling is important, but a team like NDSU this year creating a hard schedule and going 0-30 doesnt do much for the league either.
AJ is right though, and when he says top 25 wins he means top 25 caliber teams. SDSU and USD do a fine job scheduling, its the teams in the "middle tier" of the conference that have had doggy doo doo schedules. Nice to see some collaboration in making that stronger on the women's. Clearly the mens programs did a great job last year of working and gaming the Wonderful beast that is the RPI...
