Coyote Nation stepped up big time tonight. The attendance was announced at 2,749 but it seemed more like 4 or 5 thousand. The crowd was so into the game that I can't imagine that anyone wasn't completely happy leaving the dome tonight. If that game ends up being the last basketball game in the dome it will be going out in great style.
The things that really stood out to me wasn't just the overall aggressiveness of the team but how they defended the Toppers when they were up double digits in the 4th quarter. Most teams would just sag back into a passive defense but the Coyotes kept pressuring WKU in their back court and made them have much difficulty bringing the ball up court. WKU never had a prayer of making a true comeback because of the aggressive nature of the Coyotes defense. Half the time they turned it over and half the time had to take a very difficult shot. There were various times where you could just see the frustration on their faces as if they don't often face the kind of defensive pressure that they faced tonight.
The offense was all about nailing that three tonight. The Yotes hit a three pretty much any time they needed it tonight. I heard alot of people yelling at the refs tonight but I thought the officiating was very good. The stripes weren't perfect but they let these two teams play and I believe that favored the Coyotes even though they picked up quite a few aggressive fouls.
Western Kentucky seemed to convert very well when they had shots (and many of them tough ones) within 10 feet of the basket. The Coyotes had a little trouble finishing tonight but they blasted a good rebounding team on the glass which led to more chances overall. No question the home court made a big difference in this game. The crowd willed the team to win and the team gave us exactly what we wanted.
If the next step is in El Paso it's gonna be the toughest game this team will play this year. I thought I heard somewhere that if Oregon is the opponent the Coyotes will not necessarily be traveling out to Eugene.
