I'm of the mind that all publicity is good publicity, but they don't really paint a flattering picture of the dome, or Vermillion. No mention that Mooney spent two of his three years in Vermillion playing in the best (and newest) gym in the conference. Or that the Dome is getting some first-class football upgrades. Oh well. Recruits will see for themselves. All publicity is good publicity....

Quick, random though: I get that some people will think I'm nuts, but I'm damn proud of Matt Mooney. I've only had a handful of interactions with him, but I'm legitimately excited and nervous for him tonight. Hard to fully explain, but it feels like he is playing for Texas Tech and USD tonight. Happy to see his hard work reward him.

Matt Mooney spent most of his NCAA career at USD. I know this is Texas Tech and the Big 12's moment, and Matt is legitimately a P5 caliber player, but it's OK for Coyote fans, and the Summit League for that matter, to be proud of his accomplishments.

The accomplishments are simply unthinkable. A guy who started at USD is now starting in the national championship. That should be impossible. Coaches can continue to ascend but players have a very finite career. It's such an incredible story and I'm damn happy for him.

Ultimately he is an alumnus. And sometimes people complete their undergraduate degree at one place and get their graduate degree elsewhere. But they’re still an alumnus.

He also left the program on terms I can live with. If Smith had stayed I'm not sure I'd be so fuzzy about this.

Mooney didn't get his title, but that atmosphere was absolutely insane. So much fun.

T Tech and Mooney have nothing to be ashamed of in that game. They were the underdogs, but gave themselves an opportunity to win. Great game.

Never thought I would hear The University of South Dakota mentioned during an overtime of the men's championship game. Brokaw and POB even got a mention. And, most importantly, it was noted that Matt Mooney is a graduate of USD. Cool stuff.

Love that Mooney remembers everyone at USD. I'm glad so many were still in his corner. Mooney might have left, but he is still the best player in program history. He talks about coming back this summer to do a clinic for the local kids. I hope he stays in touch in the coming years. I also hope he is able to come to appreciate the dream he just lived. He might have been one step short of the title, but this was still such a special run: Tech was coming off their first ever Elite 8 appearance, but had lost 6 of their top 8 scorers and were projected to finish 7th out of 10 in the Big 12 with a likely NIT appearance. No one expected anything from this team. The squad exploded out of the gates, jumping out to a 15-1 start with their only loss to Duke. There was a lull in the middle of the season but they finished very strong to win the program's first Big 12 title - breaking Kansas's 14-season streak. In the NCAA tourney they were rewarded with a 3 seed. A good seed, but not one that's expected to make it all the way. Tech went out and handled Northern Kentucky and Buffalo in the first two rounds, as expected. Then they absolutely smothered #2 Michigan, last year's runner-up who looked like the best team in the country at times this year. Then they got by a very real title contender in #1 Gonzaga (who has made very deep runs in recent years) to clinch the school's first Final Four, while Mooney scored 17 points on 6/12 shooting and made big free throws down the stretch. Then a convincing win over another #2 in Izzo's very experienced Michigan State squad where Mooney scored 22 of their 61 points as he held the Big Ten POY to 4/16 shooting in front of over 70,000 people with millions more watching from home. However, fate was on Virginia's side, as they had a third game in a row manage to fall in their favor at the very end of regulation and they were able to pull away in OT (thanks in part to a questionable review). Apparently nothing was going to stop that redemption story. Any player would kill for that run. Starting on a national runner-up squad is special, but it's all the sweeter when no one believed in you. I went to the national title game and it was an absolutely insane atmosphere. 70,000 people going crazy with every single basket. I was like 5 rows from the ceiling and it was a raucous crowd even all the way up there in orbit. What a setting for your final games.

Matt Mooney has signed with the Memphis Grizzlies. Matt will be joining John Konchar, formerly of Fort Wayne, who is on a two-way G League contract. Funny how the world works in a way that those guys are now teammates. Best of luck to Matt!

Nice! Sounds like he signed an “exhibit 10” contract, which means he is guaranteed a spot on Memphis’s G-League team, and will get to participate in the Grizzlies training camp. He’s getting his shot.
