The 2019 Volleyball Schedule is out and will be very challenging. It will prepare the team for conference. We lose 3 of the top 4 players in kills from last years team. We do however bring in two strong transfers and a highly touted freshman class to help. I have been a very nerdy follower of volleyball for years in particular USD volleyball. During the early season there may be an adjustment period but by the time conference season rolls around I really like the potential this team has to offer. What will keep this team in most games will still be the defense. The team has gained some height and athleticism that could carry this team. Go Yotes.
P.S. I have my season tickets purchased. Who will I be seeing at the games?

Volleyball is a great spectator sport in college athletics. It’s fast paced, exciting, and calls for a lot of strategy. Several years ago we hired a young coach named Matt Houk, a former assistant at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. In several interviews, head coaches at Big 10 and Big 12 schools were contacted and asked their opinion who was the next great young coach looking for his/her first job to lead a D-1 program. Matt’s name came up on many of those interviews. Matt took the job and ushered in a new era of Coyote volleyball. USD was no longer the doormat or joke on that sport. In 2009 Matt hired one hell of a player named Leanne Felsing as an assistant coach. Leanne’s career at UW-Milwaukee was storied. And Matt knew it as he had to setup game plans to coach against her. She not only was talented but fiery and passionate.
In 2013 Houk took the top assistants job at Minnesota and is now the associate Head Coach of one of the top women’s programs in the country. And our administration understood the best bet we had for continued success lived in Vermillion. The newly married Leanne Felsing ( now Williamson) was offered and accepted the job. Not only has Leanne continued the success Matt had, but she has improved upon it. And the best thing about her? SHES A COYOTE. She gets it. She lives the life as the head coach of our Coyotes. She’s 100% a Vermillionaire.
So will I be at matches annoucerbob? You ain’t a whistling I will be. She and the girls that play for her deserve to play in front of nice crowds. USD can own this sport in the Midwest. They, like our women’s basketball teams, schedule to lay the ground work to compete for conference titles and NCAA tournament appearances.
I’ve preached on this sport periodically over time, but it’s a great spectator sport to get involved in as a fan. Tickets are inexpensive, the girls play hard, and we are well coached. Do yourselves a favor. Get to arena and become a rabid fan. Buy season tickets, and if for some reason you can’t attend, give them to some young girls instead.
You’ll see me my friend. And you’ll see me at Ames, Brookings, and Sioux Falls as well. Do yourself a favor. Buy a season ticket or two and get in on the action. In fact, if they don’t play hard and provide you as a fan entertainment, I’ll buy your season ticket back for the unused portion. That’s how much I believe.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I have had the honor of sitting courtside at all but one volleyball game ever in the den and 100% of the games in the SCSC and this is one sport where the crowd can really make a difference in the game. Volleyball is about a series of runs and adrenaline. Our home court is an extremely tough place to play. Leanne has assembled a very good team and has set it up for many years to come. She understood we needed to get taller and more athletic and has set the wheels in motion to do it. We will have to chat at one of the matches Yoteforever!!! Volleyball is by far my favorite sport!!
P.S. I purchased 4 season tickets for the season will be at all home games and the one at the Pentagon!!!

Definitely will try to hit the matches on the Friday's before and the Sunday's after home football games. Also will try to put together a group to head down for the Tuesday night game vs the bunnies.

You sure make volleyball sound exciting but, while I appreciate the athleticism on display, truth be told, I don't understand the rules, strategy or really much of anything about the sport. I wish Coach Williamson would put on a preseason clinic sometime to familiarize potential fans like me the ins and outs of the game. Couldn't hurt and just might help attendance a bit.

Kind of simple like basketball then: throw the ball through the hoop, don't let the other team throw the ball through the hoop. That really explains it. Thanks.

Seriously, I don't know the rules either, but you can still get into the game by knowing that little about it.

I tell you what...I’ll start it by giving an overview of it from the 30,000 foot level. Then gradually bring it down to game planning but you need to ask questions as we go or I’ll die on the vine. Fair?

Fair? First question: rackets are or are not allowed? Actually, I just got in from the back yard doing some bump-set-spike drills with my daughter. I don't fully understand all the nuances, but it is a fun sport to watch.

Fair? I’m in. I think this would make a good ongoing thread. Volleyball Basics, or Volleyball Q&A. I know enough to enjoy watching, but I may have some questions about position rules, rotations and strategy, or about certain fouls. ORU’s message board has an agreement with some of the media covering them where they select a couple of questions from a designated thread to ask the basketball coaches each week as part of the interview. Would be cool to get something like that going with Leanne.
