University of South Dakota Director of Athletics, David Sayler, announced Monday that the Coyote football team will play at the University of Montana Sept. 1, 2012, in Missoula, Mont., completing both teams’ 2012 schedules.
The Coyotes will receive a cash guarantee for the game next fall and, as a result of scheduling the game, the two schools also have negotiated a home-and-home series in 2013 and 2014. Montana will visit the DakotaDome on Nov. 9, 2013, while the Coyotes will return to Missoula Sept. 13, 2014. All dates are subject to change.

I am guessing that 3 of our 2012 opponents will be in the preseason top 5: UNI, NDSU & Montana. (2 of the 3 will be in the Dome) Throw in the Northwestern game, the rest of the Valley & Colgate and that makes for a great schedule.
Also makes for a great home schedule for 2013, with Montana plus 4 Valley teams (including the Rabbits)

Per Jeremy Hoeck twitter account, the Griz are paying us $200,000 for the 2012 game and stiff buyouts for the remaining home & home games

I can live with this setup. Cash for the first game and we get the front end of the home and home. I'm gonna assume they live up to the home/home since they will want the return game.

Let's hope it sticks.
Sayler has and is continuing to raise the bar. Let's hope the program and its support follows.
The home games over the next couple years will all be enjoyable. Makes it alot harder to choose which game to make it back for.

Full Valley slate, Northwestern, Montana and Colgate.....pretty good schedule. Going to be tough next year. I agree it will be tough but no one can say we are ducking the competition. If we are going to eventually compete we need to play them each and every week. It will only make us better. I personally think this schedule and facsimiles of them in the future will be a BIG recruiting tool. I like the schedule.

With what USD has coming back next year....what is a reasonable expectation for the team record next year? .500 or better? below .500? These Valley teams are going to be tough next year: NDSU UNI YSU Ind State Ill State Mediocre IMO: SDSU SIU WIU MSU Where do you think USD will stack up?

We lose a lot of kids to graduation, more than normal. That being said, I know Coach Meierkort liked what was coming back. He felt we would be competitive. We lose our QB, a crap load ofO lineman, and a lot of defensive starters. But the starters coming back are pretty darned good. It will be interesting to see how our new coach develops these guys. If I had to guess, I would put us about 6th, maybe 7th. We will be tough at home.

With a lot of seniors gone, this is a tough team to read. I think Joe Glenn will get more out of his players, though. If USD pounds the rock this year, they will stay competitive. The key is Marcus Sims and Noah Pearl and get a good, hard-nosed rushing attack so Vander Maten does not have to do too much. oh yeah, they have that transfer coming in to.
The key to a ball-control offense is having a defense that stops the other team. The defensive line should be solid, but graduation is hitting the linebacking core and safeties hard, so they will have to step up. With that said, i think the best I expect is middle of the pack since it will be an inexperienced team, and that usually does not bode well for competing for a conference title.

I'll agree with that assessment. If we can hold our own, make every game competitive, and finish in the middle to upper half of the conference I think we can call the season a success. I don't expect a conference title right out of the gate.
If we finish in the cellar then I will not be happy.

The schedule is looks very tough at home with teams we would normally be competitive with on the road. I don't expect much from this first season under Glenn, but don't underestimate Vander Maten. If Josh can't get it done, Earl will have time to be challenging by mid-season. Also, even though the O-Line was better last year, Tripp was thrown to the sharks with no experience. We get a real O-Line coach ad Tripp gets to shine doing His thing. The wild card is still in how much control Joe gives Wes.
Don't get down on a poor first season, if Joe can keep the recruiting lines open the next few is going to be exciting.
