Well here we go again another game, another L pulled from the bag of Coyote tricks. This time the excuse is two missed field goals. The Yotes only play well when there is no pressure on. As soon as UNI goes up by 11 than suddenly the Coyotes score a touchdown but after it was already too late. As soon as the Yotes think they have a chance a horrible onside kick that goes out of bounds. It would not have mattered becuase had the Yotes recovered they would have figured out a way to squander the game.
To the old timers this was a moral victory piled high amongst all the others that have defined Coyote football. So pop some corks from that champaigne folks, this was a great game today deserving of a celebration. 24-21 is a good result to all the accepting Yote fans and all the "aww shucks we'll get em next time" people that continued to not demand accountability.
This year the Yotes will go 0-10 against scholarship programs and 0-8 in the MVFC. Not knowing who was in charge of this mess would any Coyote fan keep a system in place and go forward from this kind of debacle. BTW firing Meierkort was absolutely the right decision.
David Sayler, this is now on your shoulders. It's your job to demand accountability. Allowing Glenn to stay on board with the same OC and same QB is unacceptable. David did Glenn really want to come out of retirement or did the USD family guilt him into coaching this program. It certainly seems like the latter.
We as Coyote fans deserve answers to this. There should be an immediate press conference the Monday after the season to appologize to all Coyote Fans that invested their time and money into this joke of a football team. If Glenn is to be retained both Sayler and Glenn should appologize for the play of this team this year.
When Beschorner was retained after last year I knew that was a mistake without blinking. My gosh not only was he retained but he was retained to be the heir apparent. Really, USD that is what we want.
My personal opinion is that the Coyote should cut bait and realise the mistake before we turn this into a 3 and 4 year mistake. If Joe Glenn was 10 years younger and was going to be around long term I would say lets go ahead and allow this thing to develop. Problem is, even if we do allow Joe Glenn to right the ship he is likely to not be here long term and there is no one within the program is head coach material.
My idea is to go after Kalen Deboer as he was a proven winner at USF and also helped right the offensive ship at Southern Illinois. That was my choice during the off season.

What is amazing is that the general opinion is that the radio team is happy with the way the Yotes played today.
I predicted way back in 2007 that most people would use the following excuses to allow Coyote football to flounder.
The tough schedule of 2007 kept the Yotes out of the playoffs
The transition would be used as an excuse
The close losses were signs of progress eventhough close losses are the face of Coyote Football, not close wins.
The increasingly tough schedule with limited NAIA and D2 teams
The tough Great West Conference
Now the excuses are that it's all about the tough MVCF and the new coach and/or the young players or undisciplined players.
Why is it that SDSU fans wouldn't accept those excuses but USD fans do accept those excuses. SDSU made the playoffs in their first year or eligibility and will likely make it again this year. Their basketball team has made the NCAA tourney and the Women are now annual participants.
At USD do we really believe we are just about at that level. Not a chance.
SDSU is going to go 5-0 against the Yotes in the big 3 sports this year. If not 4-1 at worst.
How can people continually have patience with this football program. When are we as a fanbase ever going to expect winning NOW, NOW, NOW instead of 2 or 3 years down the road which is always when USD will finally be competitive. Well 2 or 3 years from now is here and passed and still the football program is going sideways or backwards.
Lets face it USD must be cursed. Maybe no head coach can win at USD and we will just have to accept that.

Hey Coyotefan, good to hear from you. One thing I agree with you is that we Yote fans ought to have high expectations. Teams that do seem to fare better over the long haul. However, I do not agree with many of your statements because a decent program is not made on snap judgements, even if they are based on a season and not one game.
I'm not happy with the team's performance but as I've said before a negative attitude will never, I repeat never get you where you want to go. Let's say you run a business in a very competitive environment and the business isn't doing very well. Do you talk the employees down at every turn? Fire them? Or do you work all the harder. Going around pointing fingers won't do it. If I were in the Athletic Departments shoes I might be a little embarassed but I'd be more determined than ever.
Cool it a bit guy. My skin is pretty thick and now I'd like to see some positives from you. It's harder I know but give it a try.

I thought the Coyotes played OK today. But of course, it was the same 'ol same 'ol with momentum crushing penalties, another blocked kick, etc. But the event that has me absolutely mesmerized was when the PAT unit ran out onto the field after the touchdown with 40 seconds remaining and the score 24-19. What on earth were they thinking?!?!?! Did the staff not communicate to them during the drive that if we score, we would be going for two? Does the staff really need to communicate that to them because it is so abundantly obvious? While I realize it was a case of "no harm no foul" since they were able to rush off the field in time to allow the two point conversion attempt, I am still absolutely blown away that this type of thing occurred. Embarrassing!!!

Lets all say this together and believe in it because if we don't we are doomed. It is NOT ok to play a good game and lose the game. Why, because playing good and losing is one of the key characteristics that define Coyote Football. When it comes to losing close games usually the reason is because teams that play well in those situations have a confident subconsious mind and are well prepared to the point of knowing they are going to succeed in those situations instead of hoping to do well. Maybe this team needs to practice late game situations far more often. Maybe since we have been hopefully out of it so long we should have gotten into a no huddle offense to practice these things more often so the kids would gain confidence playing instinctual football such as what often wins in the tight moments of games.
Except for one particular position I am confident that the players are at or close to at a MVFC level in talent. I realise that Joe Glenn is new and needs his guys but good coaching can generally take players and adapt to those players and turn them into a cohesive team. That has not been the case this season.
The Yotes will go to SDSU and get thrashed probably to the tune of 35-7. Might as well go into post season mode when it comes to playing arm chair quarterback. I actually heard on the MVFC TV feed that one of the biggest reasons there has not been a quarterback change is that Josh fits the best into the system in place. If the system in place is failing on most cylinders than why can't Glenn mold his system to his best players instead of try to fit a round peg into a square hole. This just doesn't make sense to me.
What Sayler needs to do the Monday after the SDSU game is to have a heart to heart with Glenn and get a true answer if Glenn is 100% invested to this job. Would he rather be playing golf in Arizona? It's a legit question. Just listening to Glenn's interview it seems as there is something missing with him right now as if he doesn't have any real solutions to the big problems this year.
If Glenn is absolutely committed to this job, and not as just a mentor than Sayler needs to almost make it mandatory that the offense goes in a completely different direction next season. We cannot keep going to the well of what is not working and try to turn lemons to lemonade. The system is archaic and against the tough interior defenses of the Valley a team just about has to be multi-faceted and not just run oriented. It's good to be able to run but without the threat of a consistant passing game defenses will be cheating all day.
We also have to ask ourselves where do we see ourselves in 5 years if Glenn stays on board. Is there anyone on the current staff that is definately head coaching material. I think that is a resounding NO. So if Glenn is there for mentorship purposes and doesn't think of himself as the long term option than we need to find a vision that is more permanent in nature.
That is the reason that these tough questions need to be answered NOW. I don't even want to hear people try to act as if Meierkort would have been the answer. He is now coaching at a high school level. What should that tell us. He was good for getting home wins but was never going to put a consistant product on the field enough to win on the road to allow the Yotes to become serious playoff contenders.
I am absolutely baffled how Glenn has handled this season. He has a huge resume and should know what it takes but I haven't seen any particular decisions made that a reasonable person would take as that coming from a seasoned and successfull head coach. I am absolutely shocked that the Yotes won't even have one scholarship win all season.

Your desire for Kalen DeBoer as HC would be a bad idea in my opinion. He is OC for southern Illinois - they are 5-5 currently and their offense has struggled. He has been very ineffective at the FCS level. Against the MVFC they have scored - 14, 3, 17, 34, 38, 17, 12 for an avg of 19. They have a top level defense that has kept them in games.

Fair enough he has struggled lately. I still like what he did at USF. I don't know if it was him or his successor but USF was good enough to play UND better in their house than what the Coyotes did and that is with fringe NAIA/D2 talent. Normally I wouldn't necessarily take someone with just NAIA experience but football is football and he just didn't win but dominated at his level.
OBC I am sure you are probably on the keep Glenn bandwagon (and I myself am only 50% off of it if we do make sweeping off season changes). Who would you recommend if we had to make a choice.

I would like to see Glenn see this process through. He had a decent recruiting class that redshirted some guys that I think could play now. Matt Miller and Chris Wiseman look like they have been hitting the weights hard this year. Excited to see them play.
The defense is getting better with play from some young guys. Reeves is playing better at corner (true FR), Lage is going to be a force (true FR). Glenn brought in Taverna and he has had a solid year - good player.
Tons of underclassmen getting key time on defense. Iddings, Lage, Jacobs, Greer, Jacobs, Guziec, Reeves.
The OL is key in any offense, but especially important in what Glenn is trying to run.
As far as the next coach after Glenn - I would be shocked if he is someone currently on the Staff.
What hurts USD IMO is the fact the budget dictates the assistants are going to be younger - less experienced guys.

If we are to have inexperienced guys at least have them not be at the coordinators position. The Admin is going to have to budget to at least retain good OC's and DC's. Cheaper after that I can see. If we go cheap in the OC or DC it's going to create problems.

If the Coyotes pull off the upset next Saturday, do anyone's opinions on this subject change? I give the Jacks a 95% chance to win the game. There is just way too much for the Yotes to overcome on the field for the hype to make a difference. If anything the extra hype will lead to a bigger blowout. As far as USD fans, why are we always in defensive mode when it comes to explaining another failure and always falling way behind when it comes to bragging rights. SDSU will win the corn bowl 9 out of every 10 years unless the culture around USD changes from just being happy to compete to demanding wins.

If the Coyotes pull off the upset next Saturday, do anyone's opinions on this subject change? It is the only game USD has left, so it is important. A win next week does not change the fact USD has not gotten it done 9 times this year and will be remembered as a team that struggled to compete. Would be nice for the players and staff to get a win heading into the offseason.

This debacle started last year when Ed was fired. I have no intention of getting into a debate with a certain poster on here that has all the answers, but it's suffice to say 2012 was a fricking disaster.
Just step back one step and compare the last two years. While it is true that Ed had troupe winning on the road, Ed did win at home. We played a lot harder last year as a team than at any point this year. Many of the coaches we have this year were on Ed's staff, so that isn't an excuse. It comes down to one of two things, it really is that simple.
#1.). Ed was a better coach than what many posters on here thought. Or #2.) the talent pool has gone backwards, at which point you can blame Ed and his recruits.
In reading some posts tonight, one poster thought that we were on par with most of the MVC teams, with the exception of one position. Although he was a gentlemen and didn't name that position, I think it's safe to say its the quarterback position. That assessment may, or may not be correct, but for arguments sake, let's say it is valid. Then what do we have? We have an inferior coach. Pure and simple. Someone inferior in talent to Ed. If we had the talent across the board, with the exception of one position, might then it not be a safe bet to try someone else at that questionable position? That happened once as far as I can remember, and that came to be at Indiana State. What was the result? We had a young man lead his team up and down the field in the 4th quarter against a 2nd team defense, but nonetheless, he moved the troops. And they played with a heightened awareness.
Say what you want about Ed, he won. He handled the transition like a stratavarious. We had talent year in and year out that could play. Yes, I am we'll aware we had trouble on the road, but you know what...WE AT LEAST WON AT HOME.
Now comes Joe Glenn. Joe Glenn is the ultimate Coyote. There is no ones that bleeds more Coyote blood than joe Glenn. His resume suggests he can take this program to the next level, and he may if given enough time. But there is one thing Joe can't argue, and that he is on the wrong side of the hands of time. Is it impossible? No. Ask Bill Snyder, it can be done. However, is it likely? I don't think so and here's why. To the older Coyote fans, he is old school. A man of integrity and discipline. We like that, we are comfortable with that. But the real question in my mind that needs to be answered is can the student athletes relate to that? Does he resonate with his players? I don't think, and yet I do think it is any fault of his. It is a reflection of society today. Kids want to play for coaches they can relate to, and feel are dynamic. Joe is dynamic alright, but I don't think kids can relate to him. They did relate to Ed, and to the naked eye, it appears to me that they did play harder for Ed than they do Joe. Just a fact.
If you were at the game today, did anyone pay much attention to our sideline? We were flat. Uninspired. To me, that is an indication Coach Joe lost this team several weeks ago. I have never seen such an uninspired team as I'd did today. They looked like they cold give 2 craps whether they were there or not. To me, that is what is unacceptable.
Next year at this time, regardless of the record or progress made or not made, if we are not in the playoffs, it is a given we will have one poster for sure calling for the head coaches head. You see, in his mind, he is so tough that one can never accept losing...ever. If so, you are weak. Also, you don't know squat about anything like he does.

If Coach Glenn has lost the team, it's because he's backing the wrong horse. They played hard for 14, second team defense or not. The kids know he is the future of the position.

We should not be comparing this year to what Meierkort did since 2007. Ed's team did well with weak schedules but once that rubber hit the road they failed.
Nevermind neither Ed Meierkort nor Joe Glenn's performance this year are good enough. Ed M was going to be average at best. Yoteforever it seems like to me that you will accept average. Why? If you never wanted a chance to strive for greatness than Ed is your guy because he was never going to take this program any further than where he got it to. He deserves credit for 2004-2006 as he did well during those years but we had long since hit the wall as a program when he was fired.
I know my history very well especially under Meierkort's rein. He could not win on the road and his teams folded in pressure situations.
We need to try to win the Missouri Valley Conference and should expect to compete for conference and national titles. Is that not fair to strive for. Should we stive for 6-5 seasons. That was Ed Meierkort. That ship has sailed and rightfully so.
I am so amazed at the low expectations that so many Coyote fans expect out of their teams. Right now the Jacks fans are pissed that they lost to Alabama in basketball. They have a NCAA appearance. They have a women's team that has gone to 4 straight NCAA tourneys. They lost a tough game to NDSU and many of their fans are pissed. Why because their expectation level is so far above what people like Yoteforevers expectations are. Yoteforever your personal connections with these coaches inside the program is clouding your judgement. Either that or you are satisfied way too easily.
Why don't some of you go read our peers message boards. Go check out the SDSU and NDSU boards and tell me that we shouldn't think the same way. If you tell me we shouldn't, I will show you someone with a losers mentality.
I do not have a losers mentality and won't hang with those that do have a losers mentality. My gosh the post game radio broadcast made it seem like the Yotes won or were a good football team. They kept praising how good we played. That is so frustrating because what that does is take away alot of the urgency to get better.
Since 1987 (I believe) USD has one-third of a conference title and one playoff appearance. That is 26 years of what I consider fairly serious mediocrity. Let me tell you something. For those 26 years not many Coyote fans, coaches or administrators really thought it was important to win NOW. They would always tell you to have patience. Just have patience. I have heard lets have patience for about 20 years myself. Well I say take your patience talk somewhere else because I don't want any more of it.
We either take the steps NOW to make this a good program or in 2022 we continue to have patience and in the meantime we went 20 more years with similar results.
If us as fans accept a 1-10 season regardless of what led to it, we are our own worst enemies. If you want to say lets keep Glenn, fine have your way. But I will say we need to at the very least rid ourselves or Wes, Josh (as QB) and hire a D1 FCS level OC to lead this program and also get a new special teams coach.
I believe if our offense can figure it out the D still has a chance to be good under Petrino. I am not necessarily endorsing Petrino just saying I don't think he is the biggest issue we need to address. Maybe he is AN issue, just not the most urgent issue.
This is now on Sayler. We are not going to improve as a program by just staying optimistic and hoping thing improve through progression. It's going to take an honest self assessment of this program to get things turned in the right direction. We aren't even on the same playing level as the top MVFC teams right now when consider our coaching. We are a team closer to being on the same level as USF and Augie.
