I agree, Simmons looks like the real deal. That said, stats don't mean a whole heck of a lot as far as transition from HS to college. I do think Simmons fits our current system very well though. He makes all of the throws he will be asked to make in USDs offense in his Hudl film.
I don't know anything about the Christian kid that committed to SDSU, but his stats don't seem like his skill set set is very comparable to any QB that they have had recently. He sounds like more of a spread option QB run threat than a pocket passer. Maybe they are going a different direction now that Zenner is gone.
Any thoughts?

Sounds like the official visit this last weekend sealed the deal for Calvin Strong and DeValon Whitcomb from Omaha North. Heard nothing but great feedback from them.

Since all are in high school, they are just verbals. Only juco and early enrollees can sign letters of intent already. High schoolers sign the first Wednesday in February

I agree we need to be more physical up front on both sides of the ball. The side that concerns me the most is on the defense. I know we missed Tyler a lot this year, but there is no excuse for not being able to pressure the QB. Even when we blitzed opposing QBs were way too comfortable back there. Bright side is we had true freshmen getting a lot of playing time on the D Line.
I've thought about the freshmen not starting on the line situation also. I have to think it's because most linemen that are ready to step in and start their first year on campus get offers from D1 schools. Thoughts? I agree, you may be lucky and get a few every now and again. Most programs hope to have enough depth and talent developed that their freshman can take a redshirt year and learn the system and get bigger and stronger. I think that is every coaches blue print, obviously that changes with injuries and recruiting misses and such. In the past I feel like to find guys that had the size (6-5, 300+) and build them into athletes instead of finding athletic, strong high school kids (6-3 to 6-5, 275) and building them into linemen. As I look back on my previous post about OL, I think it was more of the kids that Ed brought in that fell into the former category.

I may have been a little off base with my assessment of recent OL recruits. Maybe it was more of Ed's regime that were the bad bodied kids. I guess it was not meant to be as much of a knock on the current OL as it was meant as a compliment to the new group of recruits. My point was, you do not see many Fr starting on the OL in the MVFC, so focus on strong athletic kids that can be developed and ready in 2 years. I think everyone can agree that we need to get more physical at the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball.

Nice...we need some athletic kids that can be developed on the lines. I am tired of seeing us recruit kids that are 300+ pounds that are not strong and can't move. Looks like this kid along with the Clear Lake, IA kid will bring some strength and athleticism to the group. Hopefully some toughness as well

I am pretty sure that Starr was a non-qualifier out of High school due to ACT scores. I know that he was gray shirted his 1st year, and then I think he struggled his 2nd year and became academically ineligible again. Either way, if we can get Strong to sign a letter of intent, gray shirt is a worst case scenario. Hopefully he will sign, then pass his ACT in the spring, and began his assault on the MVFC in the fall.

What exactly was supposed to be done in terms of Dome improvements before they were cut from the plans?

The dome does need a major face lift. The black curtains back in 2004 was putting lipstick on a pig. The concourse and restroom renovation was nice but it still doesn't come even close to meeting the needs of the dome crowds. For the Dome to compete with the top venues in the league, from a football standpoint, there is a lot to be done. Lets start with coaches offices and meeting rooms. What we have now is a joke. A couple converted classrooms aren't going to cut it when you're going up against NDSU and State's new facility. New locker rooms are needed also. We need concourses and permanent seating on both sides, with a connecting landing in one of the endzones like the UNIdome. Underneath the new grandstand on the west side there could be a new weight room and offices. That would be a start. There is much to be done when it comes to bringing the Dome up to league standard.

Don't forget about the mysterious "grayshirt". I believe our last big talent, Tyler Starr, went this route out of high school when he could've gone juco. get him on campus, get his grades straightened out, get him on the field the next year. It won't help us next year, but we saw the difference Starr made in his 2-3 years that he was eligible.

Lets start a Powerball pool on this board. We could all chip in a buck every week. If we hit it big, boom, new dome!
I kid, I kid. I know we are all frustrated with the current situation of USD athletics, but we need to lighten the mood a little, huh.

Back to proposed names for the new and improved rabbit hole in Brookings: wow, with a name like "Dykhouse" in the mix, fans/students just might want to call it the Dana or similar. Sorry, I know this smacks a bit but it's cold and we need to get the blood flowing a bit. We all take turns at taking shots at SDSU, and they in turn do the same, and sometimes it's funny, but other times it's not. One thing you have to be impressed with at State is the investment they are making into football. Whether you like the outdoor stadium or not, what they are going to have is impressive, and will enhance their program. Add the indoor practice facility, and what they are doing is setting themselves up for success, and continued success. The fact that Mr. Dykhouse invested so much speaks volumes about him I feel. He played for the Jacks in an era where they weren't factors at all, and despite that, has invested millions of dollars into something he totally believes in, and that's fantastic. I admire the hell out him. It was pointed out to me by a friend that for years he employed Coyote football players in the summer, and even if they "filled" their summer allotment, if a coach called him and requested they take another player for intern, he usually did. He's been good to USD in that manner, and although he wants to beat the Coyotes as bad as I want to beat the Jacks, when the games over he leaves it on the field. That is a very healthy rivalry approach to the game. I tell this story for a couple of reasons. One, I wished we had former players or alumni that have the capability to fund such an event that would step to the plate and do so. People, it takes courage to donate a large sum of money into something you don't know what the result will be, but are hopeful. Mr. Dykhouse has courage. Quite frankly we have people capable of a lot not giving anything. That also speaks volumes. I'm not sure why that is,but it's not a good situation. If you remember, I started a thread called ARMS RACE and I think I hit the nail on the head. We are going to be left behind if we don't rally soon. The arena project is awesome, much needed, but a huge mistake was made when they took the Dome improvements off the table. We ARE NOT investing in our football program. Period. You can be hopeful, and pray we get lucky, but overall we are in trouble. Since I started that thread, two coaching changes I'm aware of have taken place. Bo Pellini, like him or not, is the new coach at Youngstown State. Then just the other day Missouri State hired the University of Missouri defensesive coordinator, who took a $330,000 PAY CUT to take the job. Do you think Missouri State is going to remain idle? We need to turn the heat up on our own program or we are going to be the laughing stock of the league. Joe Glenn needs help. And if not Joe Glenn, then whomever follows. But we have to invest soon or we will be left out and all we will ever get is the high hanging fruit athletes. Ones you have to take chances on. I'm prepared to step up. Anyone else? As a former player, I too am concerned about the state of our facilities compared to other in the league, especially those guys just north of us. It was difficult enough to recruit to the U when our facilities are considered at least equal, but now that they have all of these new projects going up for football, on top of struggling to win games, it is going to be really hard. I wish I had the means to do something about our lack of private donations, but sadly I don't. My $300 a year to the Howling pack isn't putting much of a dent in our facilities situation. My fear is that if we can't fundraise with Joe at the helm, who is one of the best guys I know of in that department, then when will it ever happen. Its hard to get $$ when the state of the program is up in the air. State has had the same coach for years and trusted his process through some struggles, and it payed off. Maybe we need to do the same. But no matter what, we need to find some people who will ante up so the dome can be improved, or like you said, we will definitely be on the wrong end of the ARMS RACE

Does anybody see this hire of Pelini as a long term thing? Any details of the contract, like number of years, released? I know it is his home town and he has kids that he has said that he would like to attend Cardinal Mooney in Youngstown for high school, but is this really a destination job for Bo? I sure hope not. Having a relatively successful and well known former big ten coach won't help anybody's chances in the MVFC. IF he has any success, don't you think he gets bigger opportunities sooner rather than later?

All part of the "Dome" field advantage! Dressing at Frost and having to walk across the parking lot to that hole of a stadium in Brookings is so much classier, huh? If hired at YSU, Pelini becomes a part of the 2016 inaugural season at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium. Penguins set to visit Oct 22. (Hobo Day?) Reply Retweet Favorite More Touche'....nicely played. State still sucks! Go Yotes!
