The NFL reports that Tom had a concession in Sunday's game. Hopefully he'll be fine Sunday's game. Do they sell Dome Dogs in Chitown?

Coyote Football Alumni,
It feels like we should still be playing this Saturday, but instead I am out on the road recruiting after our team was defeated in the second round of the NCAA Division I playoffs against Sam Houston State 54-42.
After a sluggish first half that saw us trailing 42-14, our team responded to the challenge and closed the gap to 44-42 before a late Sam Houston State score and an untimely turnover sealed our defeat. While playing without three defensive starters from the previous week, I was proud of our effort and our fight to battle back into a game that could have easily turned lopsided. Offensively, we accounted for 650 total yards on the day with Chris Streveler setting a NCAA single game playoff record for total yards and Brandt Van Roekel setting a record for receiving yards in a game.
Our staff immediately hit the road last week as we prepare for the first ever Division I football early signing period that will begin on December 20th. We hope to sign more than half of our 2018 incoming class during the early signing period.
Congratulations to Chris Streveler, on being named one of three finalists for the Walter Payton Award (FCS National Player of the Year). Streveler also set the Missouri Valley Football Conference record for total offense in a single season. The Walter Payton Award recipient will be named January 5th in Frisco, Texas. I, along with several members of the coaching staff and administration, will be accompnaing Chris and his family to the ceremony. Streveler has also been named First Team All-American by the Associated Press. He was joined on the Associated Press All-American team by Stetson Dagel (2nd Team) and Darin Greenfield (3rd Team).
Thanks to all of you alumni, fans and supporters who helped make the 2017 season one to remember and a beginning to something special.
Enjoy the holidays and Fight South Dakota,

Coyote Football Alumni,
Last Saturday we traveled to Nicholls State, in Thibodaux, LA, for our first ever NCAA Division I playoff game. It was a new experience for our team but we showed great poise finding a way to win 38-31. After taking a 17-7 halftime lead on a Mike Frederick run and a Chris Streveler pass to Darkari Allen, the two teams would alternate scores through the third quarter giving us a 31-21 lead as the fourth quarter began. Those third quarter touchdowns were both Chris Streveler passes, one of 47 yards to Brandt Van Roekel and one of 85 yards to Trystn Ducker. Nicholls State would use a balanced offensive attack and the momentum of a large and supportive crowd to score 10 straight points in the fourth and tie the game at 31 -31.
Our team would respond to the challenge and drive the ball 65 yards, scoring the go ahead touchdown with just under 6:00 remaining on another Streveler to Van Roekel pass. After an exchange of possessions Nicholls State would have one last chance. On fourth and three from inside our five yard line, we stopped their quarterback’s rushing attempt right at the first down marker. After a review by replay the spot giving them the first down was allowed to stand and it was first down at the one yard line. On the next play their running back was stood up short of the end zone and the ball came loose with us recovering in the end zone. The play was ruled no fumble on the field but after another replay review the fumble recovery was allowed and we were able to run out the clock securing the win.
Our offense was again led by senior quarterback Streveler who accounted for over 400 yards of total offense and threw 4 TD passes on the day. Defensively, we forced 4 Nicholls State turnovers including 2 in the red zone. Sophomore defensive end Darin Greenfield led the defense with 12 tackles including a sack. We will head back down south next weekend to play the #6 ranked Sam Houston State Bearkats on Saturday afternoon in Huntsville, Texas.
Congratulations to Chris Streveler, who broke the Missouri Valley all-time single season total offense record on Saturday. He now has accounted for nearly 4,300 yards on the season. Streveler was also named the Missouri Valley Offensive Player of the Year last week and is a finalist for the FCS National Player of the Year Award. Several other Coyote players received All-League recognition including senior Offensive Lineman Stetson Dagel and sophomore DE Darin Greenfield as first team selections with LS senior Brandon Godsey and junior DB Andrew Gray second team. WRs Shamar Jackson, Brandt Van Roekel, and LB Jim Litrenta were named as honorable mention selections.
Thanks to the several hundred Coyote fans that made the trip to Louisiana, we could feel your support as well as the support from all of those watching from home. Hope to see many of you in Texas this week.
Keep Fighting South Dakota,

I want to throw another intangible in. The most successful football jersey color is red (and in other aggressive 1 on 1 sports as well). Here's hoping the Bison go with white jerseys at home so we're in our red and not our white! Guarantee a win if that happens! NDSU is wearing all green Code Green game... crowd too. sorry haven't made it back last couple days, I've been too busy carving up our NEW O.C. from Montana freakin state... the weather will be cold for tailgate but everyone has heated tents and buses anyways just walk on into 1. as for the game, if NDSU doesn't come out like a rabid dog with their hair on fire I might just leave and goto chubs pub and keep drinking
Bye Felicia

Dear Coyote Football Alumni, It was a tough day as your Coyotes dropped their first game of the 2017 season at Illinois State on Saturday 37-21. Illinois State, who was ranked #24 in the country, was home for homecoming after losing two in a row on the road. A big crowd boosted the Redbirds effort and helped get them off to a fast start. After falling behind 14-0 in the first quarter, we battled back behind the arm of quarterback Chris Streveler, who threw touchdown passes to tight ends Brett Samson and Aaron Ramsey. A late, second quarter, Illinois State field goal gave the Redbirds a 17-14 halftime lead. Our team responded well in the third quarter driving the ball deep into Illinois State territory on back-to- back possessions only to have offensive pass interference penalties end both drives and actually take away what would have been the go-ahead touchdown. Illinois State scored again late in the third quarter but an early fourth quarter touchdown run by freshmen running back Kai Henry got us back to within 6 points at 27-21. After a defensive stop got us the ball back, we mounted another fourth quarter drive that stalled at the Illinois State ten-yard line. Streveler’s fourth down pass was batted down and Illinois State took over on downs. Two plays later they popped an 87-yard run for a touchdown to go up two scores. Our next drive ended again in Illinois State territory after a Streveler interception sealing the outcome. Our team showed a lot of fight during the second half as we battled through penalty calls and missed opportunities. We were forced to throw the football a lot against a strong Illinois State run defense and as a result of us trailing in the fourth quarter. Streveler was 39 of 63 throwing on the day for nearly 450 yards and two touchdowns. He threw his first interception of the year in the first quarter which stopped an early drive. Our guys must rebound this week against a good Southern Illinois football team that is coming off of two straight league wins including their own win vs Illinois State. Southern features one of the league’s top offenses and has excellent skill players. It will big a test for our defense that struggled with the big play last week. While we lost the game Saturday our team has all of its goals in front of it and will play with great effort on Saturday. Hopefully we can fill the Dome as we head into the final stretch of the conference schedule. Thanks again for your support and Fight South Dakota, Bob Nielson Bob Nielson Head Football Coach University of South Dakota (605) 658-5558

Dear Coyote Football Alumni, What an environment in the Dome on Saturday, as a capacity crowd of over 10,000 fans witnessed your Coyotes beat the Youngstown State Penguins 31-28 on a last second field goal by kicker Ryan Weese. Our offense was again led by quarterback Chris Streveler, who threw for 360 yards and 3 touchdowns. Junior WR Shamar Jackson led the receiving group with 11 receptions for over 220 yards and a touchdown. Our defense played well against a physical Youngstown offense making several important 3rd down stops and forcing the Penguins to punt from deep in their own territory with 1:30 left in the fourth quarter. A completion from Streveler to Brandt Van Roekel to inside the Youngstown 15 yard line set up set the winning field goal. Our kicking game made some big plays as well including stopping a Youngstown fake punt early in the fourth quarter. The win brings us to 2-0 in the Missouri Valley conference and 5-0 overall as we enter the second half of the season. Next week’s game at home with Indiana State will be extremely important game as we look to position ourselves for the second half of the conference schedule. I hope we can get another great crowd out for this important football game, as the energy in the Dome last Saturday was a big factor in our win. Congratulations to football alumnus and former assistant coach Wes Beschorner, who will be inducted into the USD Athletic Hall of Fame this Saturday along with Sam Pribyl, Tom Green, Julia Schlekeway, Heather Olson, Dave Boots, and Ken and JoAnne Beringer. Dear Coyote Football Alumni, It’s was great to finally be at home last Saturday as your Coyotes routed the University of North Dakota 42-7 in front of a filled Dakota Dome. We scored 17 points on our first 3 possessions and went on to build a 31-0 halftime lead. Our offense was led again by quarterback Chris Streveler who threw for 290 yards on 23 of 30 attempts with 1 touchdown. We also racked up 285 rushing on the day including a 14 play 64 yard drive (all runs) in the fourth quarter that used up over 9 minutes. True freshmen Kai Henry and redshirt freshmen Ben Klett led a running back group that averaged over 5 yards per carry. The offensive line was forced to go young after an early injury to tackle Nick Jensen. True freshmen Tyler Ciurej played the entire game at center and red-shirt freshmen Mason Scheidegger moved from center to tackle to fill in for Jensen. Our defense played strong the entire game, holding one of best FCS rushing teams to 102 yards on the ground and 250 total yards for the game. Sophomore DE Darin Greenfield had 3 tackles for loss and the Coyote secondary had 5 pass break-ups on the day. The defense held North Dakota to only 1 of 12 on third down conversions and also stopped them on all four of their fourth down conversion attempts. Our team continues to improve as we head into the bye week. We will use the bye week to get ready for the Missouri Valley Conference schedule that includes seven teams ranked in the top twenty-five. Our next outing will be at Western Illinois on September 30th in Macomb. The Leathernecks are currently ranked in the top twenty and feature a senior laden team. We will use this week to start our preparation for Western while working to build our depth and continuing to improve in all aspects. Hope to see you all in the Dome for D-Days on October 7th. Dear Coyote Football Alumni, It was a great opening week win as your Coyotes scored 56 first half points and ran away with a 77-7 win over Drake. Quarterback Chris Streveler lead the offense with 5 touchdowns passes and one rushing touchdown all in the first half. Four different running backs carried the ball with true freshmen Kai Henry topping all rushers with 75 yards on 12 carries. Ten different players caught passes as Streveler and back-up quarterback Austin Simmons combined to go 21-31 for 248 yards and six touchdowns. The defense held an experienced Drake offense to 147 total yards including -1 yards rushing for the day. The defense also forced four turnovers including an interception for a touchdown by redshirt freshman Phil Powell. Our guys played with great effort and enthusiasm. A lot of young players got quality experience as we were able to play over 60 players with many playing at least one half. Read more about the game and the Missouri Valley honors for quarterback Chris Streveler and punter Brady Schutt at www.goyotes.com. Our competition increases immediately as we travel to Bowling Green this next week. The Falcons opened their season this past week with a hard fought loss to Michigan State. We are also excited to open our home schedule versus North Dakota on September 16th. They are currently ranked in the FCS top ten along with three of this year’s Valley opponents; Youngstown State, who we play on October 1st at home, NDSU who we play on November 11th in Fargo and SDSU who we host on November 18th. Our 2017 schedule includes a total of seven teams that are currently ranked in the FCS top twenty five and six who made last year’s national playoffs. It will be a great challenge for our young football team but we will continue to hit the challenge head on. This fall we will be hosting a reunion of the 1972 USD football team that won a conference title. That team coached by Joe Salem will be recognized prior to our game against Southern Illinois on October 28th. The weekend will include a dinner Friday night, a special tailgate on Saturday and recognition during the game. Last year’s reunion of the 1986 team was a great success so mark your calendars now. Our game with Bowling Green game will be carried on ESPN 3 so if you aren’t making the trip you can catch the game on video. Hope to see you in the Dome for the home opener on the 16th. Let’s sell out that first home game. Fight South Dakota, Bob Nielson Head Football Coach University of South Dakota (605) 658-5558

Dear Football Alumni, Hard to believe that official fall practice starts this Saturday. Summer has gone by fast and the new NCAA rule banning two-a-day practices has allowed Division I football programs to start earlier than ever before. We will begin fall camp this Saturday with just over 100 players. As a staff, we are excited to get back to work with regular practice. Nearly all of our 100 plus rostered players were here for training during the summer months and much progress was made in strength and speed improvements. Our summer football camps were also a great success, as nearly 1,000 high school student/athletes attended camp over the course of the summer. These events are extremely valuable to our recruiting for 2018 and beyond. In early July, assistant coach Colin Prosser accepted a position with Minnesota State Mankato, we greatly appreciate his work and on behalf of Coyote football wish him and his family the very best. His position was filled with the addition of Al Sega. Al and I have worked together in the past at both the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire and the University of Minnesota Duluth. Coach Sega will work together with Coach Moose coaching our defensive line. Check out Coach Sega’s bio on the website. The University continues to move forward with plans to renovate the Dakota Dome. This important project will provided needed facilities like a new locker room, meeting spaces and enhanced seating and fan amenities. Excitement for the season is building and season ticket sales are running ahead of previous years. Our team has set high goals for 2017 and our focus throughout camp will be to improve every day. Fall camp updates will be posted on our website daily and a new feature will include position overviews by each of our position coaches throughout camp. As I have traveled this summer, I continue to be impressed by the support and excitement of our alumni and supporters. Thanks for all you do and being a part of our team.
