Wait, is Schultz out for the year? I think Coach Nielsen said it was looking like he wouldn't play this year. I think he could be a beneficiary of the 4 game redshirt rule. Would be a nice pickup for the stretch run, and still have 3 years of eligibilty.

Dear Coyote Football Alumni,
Hard to believe we are already one full week into fall practice. Only three weeks left before the opener at Kansas State.
Camp has gotten off to a good start, all fifteen of the returning players held out of spring practice due to injury are currently practicing with the exception of sophomore defensive lineman Nate Schultz. With over 100 practicing it is providing us a chance to build better depth at every position. Many new players have caught our eye early in camp and I think several freshmen will have the opportunity to see the field this year. The work that our guys put in over the summer has been evident as we have been able to get a quick jump start in camp and build on where we left off last fall.
Keep track of our fall training camp through updates on our website at: Fall Camp Updates
Our new outdoor practice complex is under construction just north of the Dome and the expected completion date for the project is sometime later this fall. This artificial turf facility will give us the ability to practice outside in various weather conditions and on a surface that is similar to what we see on the road. You can follow the construction progress here: Outdoor Practice Field Updates
We will be holding another team reunion this fall. This year we will recognizing the 40th anniversary of the 1978 conference championship coached by Beanie Cooper. The reunion date will be October 27th with activities being held as part of our home game with NDSU. More information will be coming.
Look for another alumni update during K-State week.

A dominate D-Line is the most important part of a good defense IMHO. If the D-Line can control the run game and get consistent pressure without blitzing, it makes life much easier for corners and safetys. You can protect corners somewhat with different coverages and safety help over the top. Theres not much you can do if your D-Line is being pushed all over the field.

Dear Coyote Football Alumni,
Hope your summer is off to a great start! It has been a busy summer for our staff as we have worked camps in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Iowa and Nebraska along with hosting our own camp on campus. We will also have both individual and team camps the week of July 22nd and expect to have nearly 1,000 high school players on campus.
Our 2018 team is also working hard with over 100 student/athletes training on campus including most of our incoming freshmen. Their work in the weight room is paying off as we are seeing substantial gains in strength. Almost all of the injured players, that missed spring practice, have returned to full speed and the others are expected to be full-go by August 1st.
The design process for the Dome renovation project is in full swing and construction is expected to begin in late December or early January. In addition, construction on our new outdoor practice facility should begin in August. This 26 plus million dollar facility project would not be possible without the generous support of our alumni and friends.
This fall the Coyotes will face one of the nation’s toughest FCS schedules. Our schedule includes an opening test at Kansas State followed by games against preseason top 25 Weber State, Northern Iowa, Youngstown State, North Dakota State, and South Dakota State. 2018 season tickets are selling at a record pace so start planning your trips to Vermillion now. Practice begins on August 2nd and we expect to welcome 110 players to preseason camp. If you get to Vermillion in August feel free to stop by and visit practice.
Enjoy the rest of the summer and I hope you are excited as we are about the fall.

With New Mexico out, the only other team left that would definitely get a home game against us is Indiana IMO. They had an attendance of 5,564 in their sweet-16 game. Granted, it was against a conference rival that was in-state, but they also average 3,300 per game on the season (top-30 nationally) Sweet 16 attendance: 5,564 Indiana 3,938 New Mexico3,072 South Dakota 950-- VA Tech 640-- Alabama 335-- St. John's ?---? West Virginia (1,651 in 2nd round) ?---? Kansas State (1,328 in 2nd round) (TCU had 1,069 in the 2nd round) (JMU had 1,048 in the 2nd round) (UC-Davis had 1,382 in the 1st round) Keep in mind Indiana's ticket prices were $6 for adults and $4 for children, so if they were all adults that would be $33,384 in ticket revenue. To equal that our avg price would be 10.86 for our 3,072. Based on that we could conceivably have more ticket revenue and outbid them. I only can see our attendance multiply with each round. Sunday should be CRAZY!!

Dear Coyote Football Alumni,
While it may be tournament time for basketball, it’s really football time as spring practice begins this week and we are excited to get the 2018 version of Coyote Football on the field.
We will hold our first practice on Saturday, March 17th at the Sanford Fieldhouse in Sioux Falls at 7:00 pm. The rest of our practice sessions will all be held in the Dome. Check out our website for the dates and times of our full spring practice schedule.
Spring will provide us an opportunity to build on last year’s success and get valuable repetitions for the fall. We have several young players that figure to factor into the action for 2018 particularly in the secondary and in the offensive backfield.
Several top line players will be held out for most of our spring drills as they recover from surgeries they had in the off-season. They include several offensive linemen including sophomore Mason Scheidegger, junior Tyler Johnson (who missed last fall as well) and seniors Tanner Anderson and Nick Jensen. Freshmen defensive lineman Nate Schultz and junior Luis Peguero will also not be available for the spring along with senior WR Shamar Jackson and senior linebackers Alex Coker and Alex Gray. All of them should be back to 100% by early this summer. While we will miss these experienced players, it will give us even more opportunity to work with some of our younger guys.
The Spring Game is set for Friday April 20th at 7:00 pm and like last year we will be hosting a tailgate prior to the game, more information on the tailgate will be coming.
It has been a very busy winter and our new staff members have hit the ground running. Our focus will be on practice for the next 5 weeks and then we go back out on the road recruiting for late April and May. Our players have worked hard in the weight room over the past 8 weeks under new head strength coach Clete McLeod. Coach McLeod is also training Chris Streveler and several other seniors for our pro-day which will be held in conjunction with SDSU on March 30th.
Check for daily spring practice updates on the website and if you get a chance to come watch practice this spring make sure you stop the office and say hello.

Coyote Football Alumni,
One week after signing date and things aren’t slowing down on campus. It was a busy but productive recruiting period as we added an additional 11 student/athletes to the 16 commitments we got during the early signing period in December.
The February signing group includes a heavy dose of defensive backs and offensive skill players that will add to our team speed and athleticism. Check out all the signees and their bios on the website.
We have filled all the vacancies on our coaching staff through promotions and new hires. On defense, “Moose” Mohnsen will expand his role as Assistant Head Coach to include Defensive Coordinator, Atiba Bradley will continue to coach the inside linebackers and Mark Watson will expand from corners coach to secondary coach. Al Sega who coached defensive tackles last year will become the defensive line coach and we are adding Rob Aurich as outside linebacker coach and Special Teams Coordinator. Coach Aurich comes to us from Bemidji State University where he served as Defensive Coordinator and linebacker coach as well as coordinating special teams. Aurich was an All-American linebacker at Minnesota Duluth and played on our two national championship teams in 2008 and 2010.
Ted Schlafke will continue his role as offensive coordinator and quarterback coach with Andy Prevost moving from tight ends coach to offensive line. Phil Ockinga will move to wide receivers coach and Recruiting Coordinator (roles he held for us at Western Illinois). New hires on the offensive side include Tyler Paopao as tight ends coach. Tyler comes from Eastern Oregon University, where he was the offensive coordinator, prior to his 5 years at EOU he coached tight ends and wide receivers at Southeast Louisiana. Before starting his coaching career, Tyler played briefly in the CFL as a quarterback and is the son of Joe Paopao, famous CFL coach and former CFL quarterback. Our final staff changes include the additions of two former Coyote players, Dante Warren as our offensive graduate assistant and running back coach and Jay Burns as our defensive graduate assistant. Coach Warren comes from Augustana where he had been coaching the running backs for the past two seasons and Coach Burns joins our staff from the high school ranks having coached in Florida and at Rockhurst high school in Kansas City.
Other big football news includes the Board of Regents full approval of the Dakota Dome renovation project. This project which includes renovation of the west side seating area, a new locker room and meeting spaces, renovated offices and outdoor practice areas is now officially underway. Selection of the architect and contractor will be done over the next month.
Spring practice is right around the corner as we officially start on March 17th. Our first practice will be held at the Sanford Fieldhouse in Sioux Falls at 7:00 pm and is open to alumni. Our spring schedule includes practice on Tuesday and Thursday mornings and on Saturdays. The Spring Game will be held Friday night April 20th and for the second year in a row will be televised live by MIDCO.
Our coaching staff will also be busy speaking at clinics this spring. We will be the featured staff at the Iowa Coaches Association Clinic on March 3rd and the featured staff at the Minnesota Coaches Association Clinic on April 5th. I will also be speaking at the South Dakota Coaches Clinic on March 23rd.
Thanks for all you do and Fight South Dakota,

WOW ISU gave up 0 points per game. How did they not win the National Championship. You might want to check your source. The initial post was from 9/12/17. They had played Mississippi Valley State and Eastern Washington. USD had played Drake and Bowling Green. ISU had only played Butler.

Well, Well, Well was that an ass whipping. The Coyotes absolutely deserve credit for this win but in all my years of watching this rivalry in basketball have a I ever seen the Jacks play a worse game then they did tonight. It was like Vikings vs Eagles. The road team makes it easy and get 3 quick threes early and after that it was home team all the way. The Jacks did not come ready to play tonight and I hope they didn't get all of their misfortunes and bad play out of their system in one game. If there was one thing that can be taken from this game is that good defensive teams are almost always good defensively. Good offensive teams can come and go with their shooting. The crappiest thing about this is that the Jacks are not going to lay an egg like this again, probably the rest of the year. I certainly hope this is the beginning of their downfall but they will have plenty to say about the rest of the year. early on I was a little worried and it was a very NBA'ish game at the beginning. Both teams were just settling for outside shots and I was worried that if the Coyotes decided to play a game of target practice that it wasn't going to end well against a team that is probably better at outside shooting. The Jacks had their Ole' defense in high gear and were plenty lazy. The Coyotes just simply would not be denied. I thought overall that the level of play tonight did not match the level of play last year at the SCSC as the Jacks played a hell of a game in defeat. Basically this game was handed to the Coyotes on a silver platter and they obliged by yanking that platter away. What this does is put the Coyotes in good position to get at worst the #2 seed unless there is a significant collapse which I do not see happening. With the win over the Jacks the Coyotes are going to own any tie breakers against other teams in the conference in case another team makes a run. It also puts the tie breaker against the Jacks into play as well. If the Jacks win the rematch we have to hope that NDSU continues to lose because if you have a loss you actually want it to come to a team that finishes as low as possible in the standings. Lets say the Jacks and Yotes finish both with 2 losses. If the Jacks lose to a team that finished ahead of NDSU in the standings the Coyotes could win a tie breaker. If they win in Brookings the Yotes will for sure own any tie breaker. Now it is time to build on this and beat them in March when it counts the most. Oh what do you know... our biggest "fan" is back on the bandwagon... Thats why I call him Fair Weather Fan!
