It looks like we picked up a linebacker from the Gophers, Rayfield "Ray" Dixon. He is playing his last year for the Coyotes as a graduate student. He was a 3 star recruit out of high school. He and Strevy were teammates! Seems like a promising addition to our line-backing core. Couldn't find much scouting info on Ray but he definitely brings experience and I'm sure will add to some competition in fall camp.

Yoteforever I am with you 100%....I think it is evident that the recipe for being a top team in the Valley is there and we are about to start cooking and "eating" (as the players would say! I have said this before in one of the threads and I am going to reiterate for YF. There is no doubt the recruiting class of 2016 and now 2017 are faster, bigger and stronger on a whole than any of the classes recruited before the Nielson era. I can also say that if you look at the recruits in the 2016 and 2017 classes you have more players with FBS offers and several FCS offers than past recruiting classes. This solidifies the recruiting wins Nielson and his staff have made! Look at when Nielson was named head coach of USD.... he was able to do 2 things 1) keep Coach Glen's recruits that he wanted and bring his WI recruits over to USD with him, 2) Get ready for a season that would really be for him to see the talent he has and his first recruiting class to decide what he needs and what changes need to be made for is recipe to WIN. So all the facts you bring up from last season to me would only be worthy if Coach Glen was still the coach. Last season the only thing I feel is necessary to bring up is that we lost games to top teams by a small margin. Coach Nielson is not only a proven winner but if you have or pay attention he is a very cerebral (smart)coach. Maybe a Championship is 1 season or 2 away...I won't argue that but this year I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised at the improvement and gains USD football has made. BTW Offense wins games , defense wins championships! Our offense will show definite improvement and our defense is going to surprise you...."speed kills"!

I agree with yotebfan to a point......but we have to remember that all the teams we are going to play in 2017 watched our spring game to scout it. The coaches stayed very conservative on purpose. I believe they did not want to reveal much. I can tell you that the corners played very conservative and it was obvious that the coach just focused on not giving up the long ball. He didn't want emphasis on the short pass. They also didn't press-bail at all or use nearly as many techniques that they know how to play. The coaches intent was to make it as competitive and as fun as possible to a very controlled point. The size, strength and increase in speed overall was the most noticeable part of the spring game. I can see that there are definitely more weapons on offense than last year and more speed on defense. After this spring game I am now even more sure that the close games we lost last year will be our win this year which will make us playoff contenders!! As far as the DL yes the interior line is suspect right now but the incoming freshman class has some what I call "HOGS" coming in which Coach Moose is going to get them ready to contribute in a BIG way!

My prediction is next year Yote fans will see a much faster, stronger and improved football team. The 2016 recruiting class has one common theme "SPEED" and by the looks of the incoming 2017 recruits the theme continues. They lost games to very solid teams by very few points, when you add some of the 2016 and possibly 2017 recruiting class I can see these games ending with a USD win! If you look at the roster this is a very young football team with a lot of promise. Coach Nielsen and his staff won't let us down. at Drake - Win at Bowling Green - Loss due it being on the road vs North Dakota - Win at Western Illinois - Win vs Youngstown State - Win vs Indiana State - Win at Illinois State - Loss vs Southern Illinois - Win at Northern Iowa - Win at North Dakota State - Loss due it being in their house vs South Dakota State - Win in the DOME! 8 and 3 at worst 7 and 4 Youngstown on the road will be tough!
