Our defensive scheme is not putting players in the position to make plays. Those wide open passes in the middle of the field are broken plays or miscommunication which should not be happening at this point. The players look like they are confused. Coach Nielsen will need to make changes, big changes for next season. I am confident he will. Our line is catching not being aggressive. We play soft and our tackling is atrocious.

It is very apparent that there is ONE major issue on this team and it’s the lack of understanding of other teams personnel from a defensive perspective. SIU, WIU, NDSU, type teams play with big bodied personnel and want to establish the run game first and foremost from that personnel. If they can get off running the ball out of those groups, you are going to see it all day long with run game and heavy play-action shot plays. Exactly what happened. Yes, they play other skinny type personnel, but it all window dressing. They want to gash you running the ball and throw deep on you of it. SO with that said, WHY do we keep matching up with that style with skinny defensive back type kids on the edges??? Get outside LBs up on the edge and make it an in the box run with zone behind it to avoid the shot plays. BUT we keep trying to play a match defense vs that style and our defensive backs eyes get lost and there goes the WR wide open. I question, what we are seeing on film week to week. Instead of a “positionless” defense, we look like a clueless and confused defense. Puts way to much pressure on the offense to have to score every possession vs the real good teams.

The difference in the way we played this game is it was an aggressive defensive scheme. TJ was sending the D line and linebackers after the QB play after play and kept fresh legs in there. That is what we need going forward. We have to get pressure on the QB’s. Hopefully we see this next game.

I agree with you 100% nccoyote. A culture change needs to happen. I cannot understand or accept why USD students rather go to our rivals football game than stay and support their own team. They rather be where ”Gameday” is that support their own??? I will never understand that and nobody can convince that this is the norm. If your own fans and peers don’t think it’s important to show up and support you then it’s obvious why the players have no fire. Yes, it is the fans job to help the team get fired up. Players do need to pull from within but we all know the term home field advantage exist at every level for a reason. A culture change needs to occur as well as the football operational changes.

Where the kids are from on the roster has no bearing on what’s going on with this team! There is no fire on this team! We are playing soft! I was at the game yesterday, we are at home and the entire team looked flat before kick off! I do think it’s the scheme, we aren’t fooling any of these teams! They are picking us apart! These players look defeated before they even step on the field. There is something very wrong with that! I know Nielsen can coach, he is proven. Don’t forget he has had to replace great coaches that were his crew due to career progression. There are only 2 coaches left from his crew. You can’t decide a scheme and fit players into the scheme. You take your players and their strengths and you devise a scheme to put them in the best position to make plays. Your best defenses play cover 2 and play it to perfection. Offenses don’t need to be tricked. There have been many of Super Bowls won with defenses playin g cover 2 the majority of their time. They used a DB as a nickel back instead of a linebacker. Linebackers at this level can’t cover WR and slot receivers. We have a mismatch there all the time. I’m afraid if changes aren’t made we are going to see more of what we saw yesterday☹️

My opinion on Gibbs leaving is that I do not agree with leaving in the middle of the season. To me it demonstrates an emotional knee jerk reaction. He should have finished the season and then if he wasn’t happy, of course move on. I understand an athlete wanting to play and getting frustrated with coaching decisions but to me it doesn’t warrant leaving in the middle of a season. I wish him luck and hope he finds a good home to hone his skills and play.

I say, that if the defensive scheme is not changed or revised we will lose. They will watch film and the map to pick our current defensive scheme apart is evident. I do not believe it’s our players, it’s the scheme. Along with that our special team coverage needed to make a remarkable improvement in a week! I am hoping we win and we should but if the above things are ignored we will not win. I still have the utmost faith in Coach Nielson and hopefully he made sure these issues are handled.

Opponent coaches are picking our defense apart! When you see multiple plays where there is not one defensive player anywhere near the opponent , we got a problem! Hopefully TJ is not egotistical and scraps this defensive scheme. It would be an improvement to let the corners press bale and play a cover 2. Cover 2 works especially is our starting secondary is out there.

Something drastic needs to happen! Special teams and defensive scheme is awful. Both were NAIA coaches and maybe they are over their heads because we are getting picked apart in both these areas. If something drastic doesn’t happen we will not win a game!

Are we really getting upset that the team didn't walk thru the tailgate in the rain? Maybe we should be a little more concerned that our defense was totally useless today. I don't care if they piss on my tires in the tailgate area as long as they play well. What a horrible outing for the defense today. If we didn't get bailed out by a couple turnovers, we would have been out of the game halfway thru the third quarter. I’m rolling😂😂 piss on your tires😂😂. I agree! 😂😂

I agree Ben should be utilized! He can wear down the Opposing DL and linebackers. Short yardage, especially at the goal line one would think he would be the go to. We were all saying this game would be a good barometer to see what where we stand going forward this season. We will be facing teams as good as as Montana and better. Montana did not do anything tricky or that shouldn’t of been planned for. Two key players injured early in the game did hurt us but I am sure the coaches are disappointed by the overall play. I still believe we should have a nickel package in our defensive scheme. I don’t think using linebackers to cover the slots and tight ends in this league is wise. I don’t know why we have abandoned the nickel package. Our linebackers are defensively faster and cover sideline to sideline better than years prior but tasking them to cover skilled receivers in open space requires a unique skill set that most linebackers at this level do not have. I am hoping after this loss then going to Oklahoma isn’t going to hurt the morale and confidence of this team. Coaches have a battle ahead of them and the team is going to have to regroup and get a chip on their shoulder to be ready for the rest of the battle.

I think this will be a close game but USD will win due to the following: 1) New defensive scheme and coordinator makes it tough for an opposing team to plan and strategize against. 2) Montana will have to make a lot of offensive adjustments during the game because of #1. 3) We are at home at the Dome.
USD 37 Montana 31
