My guess is that he underestimated the D1 FCS talent at running back and thought that he would come in as a junior transfer and start or play. He quickly realized that he would have to compete at high level with no guarantees. You have to have mental toughness and the will to push yourself. I am not saying that he didn’t but the quick change of mind points to something he must of realized quickly that made him want to transfer.

Brady Booker and Sam Gerst are linebackers that transferred from community colleges. Makiya is a running back that transferred from a community college as well. Devon Is the only FBS transfer we have so far and he is a QB from Iowa State.

The ol adage ...” a football team is only as good as their line”! Let’s pray that we are in a better position than it seems🙏🏼 I didn’t realize they converted tight ends in to lineman😳 Was it just for spring or a permanent change? Does anyone know? What tight ends did we have that are possibly big enough to play O-line??

I know that this distresses some members when someone points out something about the coaching staff, but let's not stick our heads in the sand. If the OL does not improve this year - dramatically - this OL coach need to go. I understand that he has been with our Head Coach for a long time, but that is not a good reason to allow a coach that clearly is in over his head, to keep his position. The OL has gone backwards since he took over and this year we will have no depth except incoming freshmen! We actually moved 2 TE's to OL in the Spring to have enough depth to practice and they played left tackle - in a passing offense! 😳😳😳😳!

I watched a spring practice and I think that Moore has increased the level of QB competition which is always a good thing. It will raise all of their effort and skill. I do agree with yoteforever that Austin’s game seems improved and he is demonstrating confidence. Tyler Tsagalis looked impressive as well. We are definitely deep at QB.

I am no t sure what happened there but I have a theory. He was a 3 star out of high school that received all this hype, his got the body prototype for the makings of a stud receiver. He signs with USD thinking he is not going to have to red shirt he will come in be a starter and make an all star impact. Like many other high school football players they do not understand the magnitude of the increase in talent at the FCS level. They think going FCS rather than FBS they are going to come in right away and make an impact. Never mind did he get redshirted, he couldn’t break the starting line up last year and when he was in the game didn’t make any impression. I’m sure this was an ego buster to say the least. The transition from high school to D1, either level can be sobering for high school stars. What makes the difference is character and resilience. Crawford should of worked hard on this off season and come in to spring ball like a lion going after prey. Then work hard on summer workouts and make one of those starting spots his. I guess he chose a different route. Just a theory!

Powell, Sivils, Ferguson, Starling would be the DB’s that may be viable choices for the transition. When they update heights and weight prior to summer workouts will give us a good idea of who is a viable option.

If this defensive coordinator is the defensive genius they say he is, I don’t think Kramer, Greenfield and Cline will be Linebackers in the scheme. His philosophy is positionless. I think the defense the Colts ran in their first playoff win this season is more probable, 7 DB’s will be utilized in the defense. This is my prediction. It would make for a really fast defensive scheme in which you can give numerous diifferent looks tha will confuse the MVFC offenses. They will cover better than traditional linebackers as well.

I can see some of the safety’s that have put on significant weight and filled out in to linebacker size as being a good option. I bet we will see these position changes as they start spring practices. This would help get some depth and linebackers that have good enough hips and feet to cover running backs out of the backfield and Tight ends/WR. We have struggled in this area so my guess is the coaching staff will be looking at this option.

If for nothing else it will Austin and Tyler work harder and the competition begins. I do not think that Coach Nielson will use two QB’s as part of the gameplan. You know the ol adage “ You show me two QB’s, I will show ya none”!

I’m surprised no one is talking about the Iowa State transfer QB that we have picked up. He is a 6’4 dual threat type QB. He likes to run! Is this topic the elephant in the room? This spring and summer QB competition is going to be an intense battle. How do you all feel about it. Devin is a redshirt Sophomore this coming fall.

Starting in January we need leaders to emerge and start leading! A team with no leaders is a team that is lost. This may seem minor but in the game of football it is essential. The next essential need is the coaching vacancies. These must be filled with coaches that have D1 experience and bring respect of proven success. The talent is there, we have it, it has to be maximized. My concerns are the OL. Whatever was broken last season must be fixed if we are going to be contenders next season. I think the schedule is in our favor. I have full confidence in Coach Nielson... he will make sure we are playoff contenders next season!
