Here’s a look at 11 teams that didn’t make the playoffs last season but may have a chance this season: herosports.com/fcs/football-2019-potential-playoff-teams-shsu-unh-bzbzillinois State, Indiana State and UND were the MVFC mentions. The article says Indiana was a playoff team except they scheduled a D2 and lost out. Weaker scheduling is fine. Its hard to fill out a schedule. Its obvious in FCS however that a D2 can be the kiss of death when it comes to the playoffs.

I always read Sioux Volleys thread on SS.com and have often retrieved links and quotes for this thread. SV is a controversial expert and central source of information on conference realignments @ siouxsports.com. There is a lot of input on realignments from some posters from this board too. That conversation is going on in a lot of places.
There was another post later in the thread making an interesting point. When D2 reduced scholarships to 36 they were pushing out NDSU and a few other power schools. That was called the NDSU rule. Some programs had outgrown D2. Like the MIAC they took action. So schools get pushed along as they outgrow their environment. That’s how the Summit survived when they picked up the Dakota Big 3.
UND was run out of the BSC and they were happy to go. The travel was too expensive for all involved. There was no payoff only higher costs. It appears there may be practical budgetary limits to the geographical expanse of an FCS conference. If UND and the BSC are to be criticized it is for mismanagement and not realizing it before they jumped off the cliff.
Sioux Volley claims high guarantees would pay the FBS bills in a realignment between the BSC/MVFC into an FBS deal. That doesn’t work because you have to pay those guarantees too. Unless there are significant new revenue streams reorganization for that deal is a dead duck.
That realization brings us back to Augie. They appear to be a viable candidate for the Summit and their location is cost effective, if not profitable, for other teams in the league.
That means no UNC who has already fled their high travel costs of the old NCC or New Mexico State that has probably learned the lesson from the BSC. Our future is here and the NSIC is the Summits farm conference. I believe it will be back to the future for the Summit, the NCC is calling and wants it’s legacy back.

Yes, not as dramatic and for different reasons but UND was ushered out of the BSC.
The St Thomas situation is an example of a school outgrowing it’s station. In some cases like the Dakota Big 3, they recognized themselves they had a lot of unrealized potential. Augie feels the same way. They aren’t being asked to leave but, like the other Dakota schools Augie wants to capitalize on the potential of its own growing market.
As far as the Minnesota schools that could move to D1 I am not aware of any restrictions formal or informal that prevenets them from moving. The Gophers are all ready competing with all of them including hockey and in state recruits for all other sports. None have moved though so for the time being the situation suggests the rule is in place.
Mn is a totally corrupt state so even if there is a rule when the bribes come in they will move.

Winning the squeakers is often a sign of an emerging team. They are learning to win. With their own improved coaching staff losing players is a great opportunity for improvement with better recruits. I checked their schedule. No D2s and no NDSU. They open at Kansas. That could be interesting and even without the GAM I think they could win that one. They come to Vermillion October 5 for a 2PM game. www.espn.com/college-football/team/schedule/_/id/282/indiana-state-sycamores

It is a concern. The running game held the team back last year. Without improvement this season may look a lot like last season

Cheapest tickets I’ve seen in a while. If you are watching the USD/Sooner tickets you know similar seats are $200 with the overall range of $65 - $500.

Curt Mallory is the head coach with a lot of D1 recruiting connections and a good coach in his own right. I was surprised last season when the GAM had them rated so high. He was coming off his first year 0-11 I believe.
yep. I looked it up. Mallory was 2018 MVFC Coach of the year too. Biggest turn around in college football last Year.

I’m not too worried about any MVFC game. Some teams I like, NDSU, SDSU & USD are among them. We watch to see who wins. With the GAM I usually know ahead of time but it’s still fun.
The GAM hasn’t put NDSU on the losers end too often. It even predicted the KSU game (a team the Yotes should have beaten) and the Iowa win. You have to like a team like that. Take a look at their straight up odds any football weekend. Most bettors don’t think they will lose. That’s probably why NDSU has the largest regional/national fan base of any team in the Dakotas. Count me among the millions.
Taking notice of Youngstown (as some have done), Augie (I mention them more than UND) or any other MVFC team seems appropriate. Noticing the irony in UND fans wetting themselves to play a team they quit playing because of their pettiness 20 yrs ago is funny.
As far as the actual game I dont think the UND/Montana game is a guide. Last time the 2 teams met saw UND hopelessly outgunned. It was as bad as the USD 45-0 win. Beating a weak Montana team is a poor indicator of how they may do against the Bison. The best team they ever had was made a play-off laughing stock in one of the biggest televised chokes in history. They don’t have a body of impressive statistics to rely on and their talent level is sub par. If they should happen to win enjoy it. It would be a legendary upset and worth the time for any football fan to watch.
I’m going to dust off the GAM in a while but UND was never close to NDSU last year and I don't think things are going to change this year. They lost more than NDSU and have less capacity to replace it.

Had to laugh as it seems Und has their super bowl scheduled for 2021. NDSU will return to grand forks for the first time since they quit the series. By the time The Bison take the field it will have been 18 years since Und quit the series assuring the NCC they were in the conference to stay. they would shortly quit those school too. Hope they don't wet them selves at the prospect of the biggest game ever in GF. They haven't had a big game since they quit.
They found out its easy to quit but tough to get back in. Its all they got and its all they ever had.
With that Und should be integrated into all the MVFC schedules. They will skip UNI and the Sycamores for their first 2 years of conference play.

The MN D2 schools already have D1 hockey competing with the Gophers. They each have their curriculum in place too. I’m not sure what difference it would make to the University if they were D1 all sports or not. These cities are growing and the local markets are getting to the point where they can support the move.

In reality, $132,500 is nothing to turn your nose up at. Amazing how jaded a person can get. Yet the Bison seem to have taken an adequate amount of time to fill the head coach position for the women in Fargo. It would seem likely the starting pay will be over the salary JD is earning. The starting pay could be in excess of $175K and there are assistant coaches applying. The pay is increasing in this neighborhood we know as the Summit. That right there increases the status of the Summit and should improve league play. We should be getting something for the money including better coaching methods and better recruiting.
