As we all think about the state of the program and what should happen next, I think looking objectively at the record is worthwhile. Not stating any opinions, just the results. I will be interested to read your opinions based on the record.
Our record as a football program against D1 competition:
Against D1 competition the past 15 seasons USD Overall record: 54 wins 96 losses 36% win percentage versus D1 competition - 2 winning seasons out of 15 USD Overall record in MVFC overall: 27 wins and 62 losses 30.3% win percentage - 1 winning season in MVFC out of 11 2 playoff appearances
Coach Nielson record overall: 31 wins 40 losses 43.7% win percentage conference only: 21 wins 28 losses 42.9% win percentage 2 winning seasons out of 7. These are the only two winning seasons for USD against D1 competition going back 15 seasons to the 2008 season. 2 playoff appearances
Coach Glenn record overall: 12 wins and 34 losses 26.1% win percentage conference only: 6 wins and 26 losses 18.8% win percentage
Coach Meierkort record against D1 competition overall: 11 wins and 22 losses 33.3% winning percentage against D1 competition

Just finished watching the game again and took some notes:
Watching it live, I was pretty disappointed. Watching it again, I feel a little different about some aspects of how USD played.
K-State scoring on the first offensive play was just USD not being ready from the first snap for the speed of a Big 12 team. Good execution by K-State and poor angles and perimeter play by USD.
Unforced errors stood out in two main areas - dropped balls and penalties. I lost count of the catchable balls dropped by WRs, TEs, RBs. If it hits your hands, catch the ball. The false starts and lazy holding penalties killed drives. Both of those put the USD offense off schedule. When that happens, USD is put into 2nd and 3rd and long situations. Those generally translate to the OC calling more pass attempts and took some of our run game play calls away. Had the team stayed on schedule, I believe USD would have had even more success on the ground. Short yardage runs were awful, but Lawrence averaged 6 yards a carry, Theis averaged 5.1 yards a carry, and Mansaray averaged 4.7 yards a carry.
Our OL really struggled pass blocking at crucial times. K-State was just more athletic and skilled up front, and when the K-State defense knew USD was in certain pass downs, they could pin their ears back and cause problems. Our OL also really struggled to get push on short yardage situations. That was extremely disappointing from a group that I had hoped to see more from this year.
Camp did not have a great game by his standards. His WRs did not help him out with the dropped passes. He missed an almost certain TD pass by overthrowing the WR in the second half. That happens, but it can't against a top quality opponent if you want to have a chance to win. We have seen him play better in the past, and I believe he will. Being off schedule hurt his effectiveness too.
Besides the first play of the game, the USD defense did some very good things. 4 sacks and 9 TFLs is pretty solid against a team like K-State. The USD secondary did a great job blanketing some speedy and skilled K-State WRs all game long. Tackling for the most part was also good - especially in open space.
Special teams: The first time USD punted, it was almost blocked. The second USD punt was obviously worse - blocked with a scoop and score. Need to execute and get the punt off more quickly. The punter seemed to be slow in that department. Very disappointing.
The one kick that USD returned was taken 35 yards - that was impressive to see. K-State is good on coverage and has a lot of speed.
Catch the ball when it hits your hands, stop making unforced or lazy penalties and the USD team will be much better. The team needs a WR or two to step up and be a true possession receiver that Camp can depend on. The OL needs to step up and play to their ability. Jensen was out and that hurt, but no excuses. The team has had time to build depth. Hopefully Lombard and Jensen will be healthy next week.
I do think the defense for the most part played with passion and fire. The offense didn't appear to have that same fire or swagger. These things can be hard to tell, but that is what I saw watching the game again closely.
Montana will be a great challenge, but not as good as K-State. The environment may be tougher than K-State though. I believe we will see a much improved Coyote team this coming Saturday.

The streak continues of teams losing the week after playing NDSU. Not factually accurate. YSU just routed SIU the final regular season game of the year and the week prior played NDSU. Missouri St and Illinois St also won the week after playing NDSU. Yes, sometimes teams lose after playing NDSU the week prior, but does the data point to it being higher than average for any of the other top half MVFC teams? I doubt it.

There is a lot we can look at as we review the 2021 FB season. It wasn't a perfect season, but a significant step forward. Defense improved significantly. The athleticism and depth on the roster were the best the team has ever had. Many back-ups stepped up when starters went down and in many cases the team didn't take a step back. At times USD was able to actually run the ball effectively to close out games and to maintain balance.
I want to pass on my gratitude and well-wishes to all of the seniors. Your leadership made a positive difference this year. An important part of life is to do everything you can when you go somewhere to leave it better when you leave than it was when you got there. You accomplished that. As a former player and long-time follower of the program, I thank you. I hope the pain you feel now can eventually be filled with the pride of knowing you course corrected the program.
To all of the returning players - it is now up to you. Be bold and step forward. Make sure all of you come back and spend the off-season hungry. There is no reason that next year cannot be a year to contend for the conference title and a deep playoff run. You are close. The team has the potential to be much better.
Three areas stand out to me that need to happen to take that next step. More strength on the front line of the DL at the point of attack, better push on run plays and stouter protection on passing plays for the OL, and retention of players for the coming season. We can't let the transfer portal drain our developing contributors. The first two items can be addressed with the OL and DL committing to owning the weight room and telling Coach Clete that he had better be ready for the intensity your two position groups are bringing to the offseason. The final item (keeping players on board) is a leadership item. Check in on your teammates and keep them in the team mindset. It may sound funny, but those all start tomorrow. My former HC would tell our team at the conclusion of our season - "Enjoy your offseason tonight, I will see you tomorrow morning for the start of next season." Life is all about continuing to put one foot in front of the other, and that march starts tomorrow with every decision you make.
We have a lot to be thankful for as we have gone on this ride with the FB team. You have my admiration and support. I am looking forward to watching the next step forward for the program. The 2022 schedule will give the team an incredible opportunity to make a statement right away with Kansas State and Montana.
Thank you and Good Luck!

The passion, energy, and effort looked to be there for the Yotes in the KU game. That was something that was missing most of the Spring and often in previous seasons. If the team can keep bringing that kind of effort every day at practice and for the games, the team will have a solid year and improve. Camp will keep improving with experience. Simmons and Streveler did not start for USD until they were at least four years deep into college. Camp is a RS Freshman. The team needs to support him and make plays around him as he gets more comfortable. Finally the defense looks formidable. The tackling and aggression was as good as we have ever seen on a D1 Yote team. Come out and dominate Northern Arizona next week and keep building - that will build some momentum into Cal Poly and then the MVFC schedule. This needs to be a winning season for the program. It is time. No excuses.

As everyone has stated the game yesterday was very disappointing and frustrating! It was also very strange!! How many games does one team have a 100 KO return for a TD and INT for a TD against them, a blocked FG and missed FG and only lose by 3? So to some degree I think it was an aberration. Yes was need to have more consistent OL and DL play, more creative and varied O play calling, attitude of punching ball in from 4 yds out on 1st down, QB option at least a few times etc. It's somewhat of an excuse but it's easy for fans to forget how tough the Valley is! If you make mistakes ie tripping, missing chip FGs, etc it will be tough to win I don't care who the coaches are. We were in the playoffs not long ago and Bob was the coach. Joe beat NDSU in Fargo when Wentz was the QB. The trick is to win a lot so consistentancy as Bob says is the trick. Case has great future but our last two QBs were two of the best ever! So no there are no quick easy answers.... If that was an aberration, the USD win at Illinois State could be called an aberration. Maybe both were. What is consistent is USD's struggles in short yardage situations. That has been consistent for years. The OL plays a soft and passive style of play. The identity of the offense is finesse. USD averaged 2.6 yards a carry and Missouri State averaged 4 yards a carry. The defense seems to have improved in the second year after a new DC was put in place. The team is struggling in the trenches on that side of the ball too. Yes the Valley is hard and that is what we signed up for. To win those games there cannot be the mistakes and poor play we saw yesterday. This has not been a one time thing however. USD has one of the worst records in conference games since joining the MVFC. The current staff has a losing record in the MVFC. 15 wins and 20 losses. 42.8% winning percentage. And the team just lost at home (home opener after a $27 million facility upgrade) to one of the consistently bad MVFC programs. That program was 1-4 heading into that game with their only win against Western Illinois. That was an unimpressive team that just came in and handed us a loss. USD was in the playoffs three seasons ago when the team had the best player in Coyote history and in FCS football leading the team at QB. That year USD finished 4-4 in the MVFC. For years the play on the FB field matched the investment that was being made in the program - below average investment and a below average performance. Now the investments have been made and the performance is falling short of that investment. IMO the expectations are way too low overall for the FB program based on the massive investments being made. The university didn't raise salaries for the coaches and staff, institute the cost of attendance payment to the players, and invest $27 million in facilities to be a losing MVFC team that gets to the playoffs once every 10 years. Expectations for the program need to increase and the excuses need to stop.

OL needs to step up. Coaches need to demand it and address this huge flaw in the team. Not getting yardage in the red zone and in short down situations is on the OL. The blocked field goal the best I could see was because our OL got driven backwards. We will be a bottom team in the MVFC until the OL finds a way to play physical football. I believe the players are good enough to get it done. Why aren't they? Bob has coached teams in the past that were physical up front. Why are we playing so soft? There are large investments that have been made in the FB program and this is unacceptable to open up the new facility with a performance like that against another bottom MVFC team. Unfortunately this program has become perennially one that leans on the belief that we are a year away. We need to be better and demand better.

As critical as they are of USD’s official attendance numbers, I’m going to be anxious to see what they report. I jokingly said 3000 earlier but I don’t think there was even 3000 people there. Gorgeous day, ranked team, and no support? As a player I’d be severely disappointed. I hope our coaches have photos of that crowd to,show future recruits. I’m dead serious. What a bummer for their players. I saw online that the official attendance was 2421

We now have 8 years in the MVFC. 4 years with Coach Glenn and 4 years with Coach Nielson. IMO looking at the results in conference give us the best metric for comparing and evaluating the program in terms of progress. I just wanted to present some of the data without editorial and see what jumps out at everyone.
Wins/Losses Overall 20/44 .30 win percentage Glenn 6/26 .1875 win percentage Nielson 14/18 .4375 win percentage
Conference Records 2017 & 2019 (4-4)
2013, 2015, 2016, 2018 (3-5)
2012, 2014 (0-8)
Scoring Offense 2019 33.25 2017 32.375 2018 27.125 2016 26.5 2015 19 2013 17.75 2014 16.375 2012 15.625
Scoring Defense 2017 & 2013 27.25 2019 & 2015 28.625
2016 29.375 2012 31.5 2018 36.75 2014 37.5
Point Differential 2017 +5.125 2019 +4.6 2016 -2.875 2013 -9.5 2018 & 2015 -9.625 2012 -15.875 2014 -21.125

When was the last time USD gave up more than 700 yards? When was the last time NDSU put up more yards? 10 yards per play on offense is a staggering statistic.

I have taken a deliberate break from posting on here. I wanted to see at least half the conference season before weighing in on what I am thinking and thoughts about the year. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and analysis of where we are as a program and here is mine:
This year has continued a trend that we have seen for the almost four full seasons under this staff as well as our entire D1 experience to date. We have upgraded our athleticism and talent across the board in every position group. The team is much faster and overall stronger. The play has remained erratic with wild swings from one game to the next and one series to the next. The excuses that we are young, that we are building, that we are close to turning the corner. All of that needs to stop - stop making excuses for the program. We are fully funding this program. We are at full scholarship strength for the FCS level and even pay cost of attendance. We have state of the art training facilities and a transformational remodel going on to our football facility. We are paying our HC a very competitive package along with his staff. I think our schemes are sound. I think we have players that have the ability to make plays. I do not think the players are fully buying in and playing with maximum effort and passion. I hope players don’t read these forums, but if you are a player and read this- here is some free advice- grab any slacker on the team by his face mask and demand he fully commits to being in and playing with maximum effort. If he doesn’t get in, find a way to get him removed from the team. Your college career is too short to put up with the lethargic and undisciplined play we are seeing too often. If players aren’t listening to the coaches - take it upon yourself to be a leader and get their attention focused where it should be. Sometimes organizations need to take action to forcefully remove dead weight. I will always support the Coyote athletic programs and will continue to show up to every game I can. The reality is that casual fans will not show up for the product that has been trotting out on the field. The players are going to have to win if they want to get people to show up. They aren’t going to show up and wait for a winner while they watch the team get beaten silly out there.
It is not good enough to have 70% or 80% of the team fired up and all-in. It takes everyone. We have to get to a point where we can play teams that we don’t have a major athletic advantage against and put ourselves in position to win. Right now when we face a team that is of equal or higher athletic ability, we are almost a lock to lose. That has to change. It has to change quickly. The program has used the excuse of “need more birthdays” way too long. It’s time to step up. We got blown out at home against a team that didn’t seem particularly old and experienced. They also didn’t strike me as that much more talented, if at all. They wanted it more.
I would love to have more SD kids on the roster. You are out of your mind if you think the coaches are not trying hard to make that happen. They are currently behind NDSU and SDSU for local talent (there are exceptions of course but they are getting first dibs). Those schools have earned it through results. It’s up to our program to go out there and earn it. Don’t think however that kids from other states for some reason care less than South Dakota kids. I was from another state and it has not been my experience that South Dakota kids cared more. Did Chris Streveler, Stephan Logan, Tom Compton, Tyler Starr, Darren Greenfield, Noah Sheperd, and Ko Quaye, look like they were any less invested in performing at their absolute best because they didn’t happen to be born in South Dakota?
Being disciplined and playing with maximum effort takes zero ability and is controllable. It is the expectation I have for the program win or lose. We have not seen that and things will not change unless that becomes the default setting for every member of the team 24 hours a day- 365 days a year - obsession with doing the right thing to be the best.
We still have half the conference season left. There is still time for the program to show us that discipline and effort. I hope to see it, but I am not frankly betting on it. Prove me wrong Yotes!

Curious what everyone is thinking for the game today? Do we want Jenkins to hit his first couple shots again so fires up a ton of shots and minimizes Daum in the half court? Jacks only have 1 player who willingly plays D (assume he will be on TBM), so I expect many open shots, and scoring 80 is plausible. Not sure who can make Daum work on D. But need avoid a total shoot-out, as the Yotes are obviously not built for that, even with the improvements on O as of late. In my view, the MBB game will be determined by which team gets into serious foul trouble first. SDSU has the overall talent edge, but is really no deeper than USD. USD will also need to make shots at their average level or better. Cannot have long 5 minute stretches without a score. Umude and Armstrong are the "X" factors for USD. If they play well, USD will win. If Jenkins is hot from the outside and Daum plays his average game, SDSU will be tough to beat. The WBB game is a toss up - completely even in talent and coaching. I would hope the home court gives USD the edge. I didn't look but I think Coach P vs the sdsu wbb coach are currently tied up in games against each other. Coach P has an edge in regular season games. (someone can correct me if I am wrong). Will be two entertaining match-ups.

I don’t buy the whole argument let’s win this for the staff. I think they loved Coach Klieman, but also deep in my heart a certain percentage have to think WTF. The whole we are family thing is out the door. Disruption plus apathy and I like Eastern Washington both with the points and outright. I prefer to have the MVFC win all times but I don’t think it’s gonna happen. Will be quite interesting to see if NDSU is distracted or not. My intuition is that NDSU will be focused and will execute well. The reason I think that is that NDSU has 25+ Seniors, which include the key leaders on both offense and defense. The seniors will take over and demand the team performs. Key matchup will be - can the NDSU defense get to the EWU mobile QB and cause him to make poor decisions. If the EWU OL can protect him, EWU has the skill positions to get open. Will be fun to watch.
