Augie to the Summit League is going to happen as YFE stated. I think a reasonable speculation on top of that is they will try and get their FB team a Pioneer League affiliation - I would guess they will be successful making that happen as well. Three D1 schools in SD is an awful lot, I agree. My hope is that instead of them cutting into the pie and taking from USD and SDSU, that they help make the pie bigger for everyone. The pie got bigger when SDSU and NDSU moved up. USD has also tried to make the pie bigger with their move and I feel has largely been successful with that - even though there is a long way to go yet. There are still many people in Sioux Falls area (and on a larger scale regionally) that are sports fans that are up for grabs. I may be in the minority, but I have a hunch that Augie will grow into a successful MBB and WBB team in the SL. Their cross country program is already pretty solid and their Softball team would compete with many of the SL teams right now (in fact they have beaten the SD schools). I am curious if they can continue with Wrestling and Baseball. Success doesn't always mean a school will keep them (see UNO's wrestling team a few years back). Augie didn't put the 2030 date out there by accident. IMO they know they have significant facilities work to do. They have a stated goal and plan to get their undergraduate enrollment to 3000 by then. Stephanie Herseth-Sandlin is a very effective and well-connected leader of their institution - I would not underestimate her.
My bigger concern than conference affiliation is their threat to USD from a general student standpoint. They want to aggressively build their pre-med programs and partner with Sanford to invest in a large way to make that happen. Sanford got the naming rights to the USD Medical school for a steal several years back, and seeing them partner with Augie to build (what Augie is hoping) will be the best Pre-Med undergrad program in the region, is tough to see.
Ultimately, USD can choose how they respond to all of this as an institution. Will they allow Augie to be a leech to suck resources from a static pool, or aggressively step-up, be aggressive and tactical, and use Augie's desire to grow to also fuel the energy behind USD's plans to also grow in Athletics and Academics? I think USD will be both aggressive and successful. USD has planted a flag in Sioux Falls and that program will grow at a steady pace over the next several years and will be looked at as a critical element of USD's success down the road IMO.

Funny thing: in my mind I have always put a mental asterisk next to NDSU's championships for that very reason. They definitely earned those high seeds, no question about it, but I'm with you on that. They would not have as many championships if they had to play some road games. Bit of a non-sequitur. Probably a few other teams that would have titles if they could have hosted every game. Those teams didn't earn it though. Looking back into the past 8 years of NDSU football, there was only one time where they had even 2 losses in the regular season (2015 to Montana and USD). That is the lone season in their title run where they didn't outright clinch home field advantage through the playoffs, but lucked out when 2 seed Illinois State lost in the quarterfinals. That program is an absolute machine. I hope Kleiman goes to K-State and everyone gets a chance to catch up. Of course I had the same thoughts when Bohl left, but maybe they'll screw up the hire this time. The Bison have earned all the good fortune they have had. It is easy to forget that every week they have a bullseye on their back and get their opponent's absolute best shot. They have handled that exceptionally well.

Grant OlsonIMO this would be a tremendous candidate as DC. Very smart player, a winner, a massive competitor, and someone that knows what a winning FB program and a winning defense needs to look like. Also from Minnesota - Could amp up USD's recruiting success in Minnesota immediately. How do you know him? Two people I know well, know Grant. They have both said he would be an excellent coordinator and will be eventually. He has all of the characteristics and experience I would want (if we were going to hire a DC that does not have DC experience). Do you remember watching him as a player at NDSU? Now as a coach, he has done great work with coach Mallory and is an up-and-comer in the profession. He knows the MVFC and knows the recruiting footprint USD needs to win battles in. NDSU has had one of the best defenses in all of FCS for years - we would be crazy not to try and do what we can to learn from them. He knows how to be a part of a turnaround (Ind St), and he knows what a winning organization looks like from top to bottom. His home is Minnesota and that is a definite area USD could improve recruiting. He would provide connections to that area (and respect) immediately. All conjecture and probably a waste of breath since I have no input (thank goodness for the program) on who will be hired. Just getting the discussion rolling.

The locals took notice. From the StarTribune: This is probably why people think it’s free: The $600,000 is attendance based but with 25,000 sold, all the prime expensive seats it’s already in the money in a big way. Apparently there has been over a mill in sponsorships sold too. I think this is a great strategy for NDSU. Personally I also think it will be a success in many ways. USD needs to use NDSU's aggressiveness and success to motivate and to be better every day. Its either do that or roll over and die. We are not spending all this money to do anything other than fight to rise up.

This team far outpaced everyone's expectations coming in to the season. From here forward they need to think 'better seed' and start the season expecting be in the tourney. It would be great SL could regularly get 2 teams in, but it will be tough since the middle and bottom thirds are really pretty bad. Which begs a question: the SL tourney will be in the SCSC next year, right? Can't remember if it is the regular season or tourney champ that hosts the following year. I wondered that myself. I think, but not 100% sure is it’s the regular season champ which means it will be in Denver. As much as I would love to host it, to me it makes sense to put a reward to the regular season champ. Puts value to winning the league over the long haul. The SL VB conference championship tournament location is at the winner of the previous season's regular season. Denver won this past regular season, so next year's SL tournament will be in Denver again.

In my opinion, the MVFC schedule is enough of a sharpening stone for the team to prepare for the playoffs. My goal with the discretionary component of the USD FB schedule would be to schedule one pay day game (as long as the program needs that to survive financially - if they get to a point where they don't need the payday because home games are so profitable, I would suggest they only play those body bag games sparingly and strategically for exposure). Ideally the schedule would be built to make it a lock to make it into the playoff field if USD finishes the MVFC schedule at 5-3. Hopefully it would be built to make the playoffs with a 4-4 conference record. (like last year) Relying on finishing 6-2 in the MVFC to make the playoffs would be a poor strategy. 3 of the past 6 years SDSU finished 5-3. Had non-conference games been scheduled too aggressively, they could have been left out one of those years.
Starting 2020 USD will play NDSU, SDSU, UNI, and UND every year. I am all for USD running the table but that is a tough lineup. If in most years the Yotes go 2-2 against those teams (that is not a given obviously) - USD would have to go 3-1 against the rest of the MVFC just to get to 5-3.

Here is what I think about the 2018 season:
* Leadership and discipline improvements are needed ASAP - It was glaring this year that there was a leadership void left over from last year. Stupid penalties and players jacking around on the sidelines should never be allowed. That is on leaders on the team and coaches. Get control of your team. * Weak-minded players need to be eliminated no matter how skilled they are. Looking like Tarzan but playing like Jane isn't going to win games. Kick the posers off the team and put in the high-effort FB Players that want to compete. * OL has to commit to turning themselves around. That group represents 5/11th of the offense and it was the worst OL in the MVFC this season I saw. This group was the biggest disappointment to me as a fan and close observer of the team for decades. Consistent good technique and desire were not there from my perspective. They played with too high of a pad level and were frequently driven into the backfield when the defender did not just run around them. As a program we will not be able to compete with the top 4 teams in the MVFC without a top OL. Nielson has brought more skill players to the roster, but our OL looks worse than in Joe Glenn's final year. Sick of hearing about how young we are in this unit (and other positions on the team). Glenn said it six years ago and we are still hearing it. Recruit well and develop to make those players stronger and better. We had starters this year on the OL that played better last year. That is unacceptable. They should be stronger and more skilled starting for a second year. How does that happen?! * QB - Simmons will be in year two and I would expect him to continue to develop. Having an experienced QB is usually a very good thing for a team. Do we have a legitimate backup? We haven't seen enough to know. Simmons is highly skilled but there is plenty for him to look at in the film to improve next year. Would be nice to know how he would look with even an average OL protecting him. * RBs - hopefully they can have two backs selected with a third that is ready to go when needed. Splitting carries the way they did this year didn't seem to work. Of course the OL blocking makes it harder to assess that group. * WR - Good skill and depth here, but injuries really added up hurting the team. Guess you can never be deep enough at a position group. Again, it sure would help if the OL could hold their blocks a little longer allowing for routes that take a little longer. If the OL could do that it would change how defenses go about covering our WRs. * DL - the unit is better than our OL, but did not perform at a level that is needed. Greenfield played with great effort all year but it was easy for teams to focus on him. #92 was dismissed from the team and that did not help the depth or strength of the unit. It perhaps helped remove a player that was obviously not meeting expectations off the field. Got some pressure on opposing QBs at times, but not near enough sacks by this unit. Need Schultz back healthy wreaking havoc in backfields and firing up his peers. Need to recruit more like him. * Corners - improved steadily throughout the year. Still reeling from losing two starters that would have been here had they not been kicked off the team. Injuries also hurt a group that was not particularly deep anyway. Big recruiting need for the team. This can be recruited quickly. * LBers - building depth here, but need the young guys to step up next year. Cochrane is the only returning starter. He steadily improved this year. Still don't feel as strong and deep as it needs to be. Take a look at SDSU's, NDSU's, and UNI's LBers most years - USD needs that. * Safeties - Good young players at the position. Will see how they do replacing Andrew Gray - he was playing at an All MVFC level prior to breaking his hand. * Kick and Punt coverage - not near good enough resulting in opponents getting superior field position too frequently. This is discipline and want-to. * FG kicking - much better as the year went on - was a huge worry early on in the season, but give the kickers credit - they did get better. * Punting - good punting but gave up a crucial punt block and allowed too much pressure other times

Here are some numbers to look at. Would be curious on what jumps out to the group. Certainly positives and negatives to draw from this.
Nielson years as HC at USD since 2016 Record NDSU 91.67% 22-2 SDSU 79.17% 19-5 UNI 62.50% 15-9 YSU 54.17% 13-11 WIU 54.55% 12-12 ILL ST 45.83% 11-13 USD 41.67% 10-14 IND ST 29.17% 7-17 MO ST 25.00% 6-18 SIU 20.83% 5-19
Since USD joined MVFC in 2012 Record NDSU 91.07% 51-5 SDSU 71.43% 40-16 ILL St 61.11% 34-22 UNI 58.93% 33-23 YSU 51.79% 29-27 WIU 41.07% 23-33 SIU 35.71% 20-36 IND ST 33.93% 19-37 USD 28.57% 16-40 MO ST 26.79% 15-41
Most Improved Teams Win % from Glenn Years to Nielson Years as HC USD +23% WIU +15% SDSU +13% UNI +6% YSU +4% NDSU +1% MO ST -3% IND ST -8% SIU -26% ILL ST -26%
Over that 7 season stretch there have been 70 MVFC teams * Two 8-0 teams NDSU has both in 2013 and 2018 * Eight teams have gone 7-1 - NDSU has 5 of those, ILL St has 2, and SDSU has 1 * Five teams have gone 0-8 - USD has 2, IND St has 2, and MO St has 1 * USD's best MVFC record was 4-4 in 2017 (USD is the only MVFC team not to have a winning MVFC record one of the years) * YSU has been the middle point in the MVFC over the past 7 years. Above them UNI was 10 games above .500 and directly below them WIU was 10 games below .500

Targeting can happen and does happen to many great and clean players. I thought the targeting was late and was a little on the cheap side. I was embarrassed by the events that took place after the targeting call. To celebrated, raise a hand, and cheer for a ejected player was BS! I was embarrassed to be wearing red when that crap occurred. Mr. Gray's actions should have had a coach take away his playing time revoked. Too many great kids on this team to have a few ruin it for everyone. Our coaches are better than that! Johnson also got ejected in the prior game for targeting. I did not see the play from yesterday that got him ejected, but he does not sound like a disciplined player. At least Johnson shakes his head when Gray lifts his arm up as the "victor", and I'm not so sad to see Gray departing after this showing of character. We've got enough young DBs proving themselves. I hope they're better leaders than Gray likely was. As a former player, I was embarrassed by that display. I will add however that it is unfortunate in life we are often judged by our worst public moment. Unfortunately for him that was a very bad moment and it was very public. I have watched his career closely and have never seen anything like that (from Gray) and am disappointed that is the capstone for a really good career that he had otherwise. Most of us should be thankful that our worst moments in life are not televised nor broadly publicly known. I wish him well, thank him for all the good memories, and hope he learns from that moment.

Whole season is about what if. So bummed. What if we don’t allow the punt return TD at KSU? We also had some foreshadowing by not being able to pick up a 4th & 1 inside KSU territory. What if we could pick up a blitz at Weber? Probably don’t give up a strip sack fumble scoop score. What if we take the touchback at the end of the first half against UNI? At worst we go into half down 1 and maybe even drive down for a lead. What if we don’t no show the first half at YSU? What if Coker doesn’t let the INT go through his hands at Indy St? Or Allen drop a wide open TD? Or Greenhaw fumble in the red zone? There’s no perfect game, but these are just a few key plays we didn’t make. This doesn’t even account for far too many FG attempts in red zone, or turnovers like in western game. For me, the problems all start on the OL. They were thin, and losing starting C week of KSU wasn’t a great way to start, and from Bob’s own words they were banged up and never able to gel as a unit in fall camp. But that also doesn’t explain a lot of standing and catching and not being low man far too often. We were dominated in trenches against SDSU, and it was never more evident than 1st & goal at the 2 and ended up turning it over on downs. Same thing almost happened at Indy st. OL gets better in 2019 we score more points and there is a trickle down effect to all other aspects of the team. Need some serious shopwreckers on the defensive side of the ball. Losing a ton of LB to graduation, and need Schultz back and about 3 more guys like him. Most of all we need some leaders to step up and take charge of a very undisciplined team. The what-ifs also work the other way. What if UNC when they got to within 6 points of USD 7:58 to play in the 4th quarter had been able to hold USD out of the end zone and then their athletic QB and WR tandem scored for the win? What if at SIU USD didn't score 21 of their 31 total points in the 3rd quarter. The team didn't show much offensively except for that quarter. What if the shifty MO St QB completed another first down to extend the drive and go on to score another TD? What if WIU's WRs had not dropped several key passes that hit their hands and instead scored. The margin of victory/defeat is extremely slim. USD finished where they deserved - they had some breaks go their way and some that went against them. Season could have ended up much better, but it was also pretty close to being even worse. USD's wins were by 15 points over a 2-9 UNC team, by 7 points over a 2-9 SIU team (this was the only road win for USD this year), by 7 points over a 4-7 MO St team, and a 5 point win over a 5-6 WIU team.

I was talking with a fellow USD fan about MVFC game records and rankings since USD joined the MVFC in 2012. I went and looked at the MVFC conference games historically. I was interested in three time periods. 1. Since USD joined in 2012. 2. The Glenn Era (2012-2015). 3. The Nielson Era (2016-present)
Nielson and his staff are making progress, but the program has a long way to go yet to move into the top third of the MVFC. USD has never invested more than they are right now into facilities and coaching salaries, so I expect results to show eventually. There are a few other observations I had when looking at each list. Five of the ten MVFC teams have sub .500 records in Valley games since 2012. Beyond USD getting better since Nielson took over, so have SDSU, WIU, and UNI. ILL St has gotten worse over that three year period. NDSU holds steady over each time period winning about 91% of their conference games. What will throwing UND into the mix in 2020 do to USD's fight to climb the MVFC leader board?
Since USD joined MVFC in 2012 NDSU 90.74% 1 SDSU 70.37% 2 ILL St 61.11% 3 UNI 59.26% 4 YSU 51.85% 5 WIU 42.59% 6 SIU 37.04% 7 IND ST 31.48% 8 MO ST 27.78% T9 USD 27.78% T9
Glenn as HC at USD 2012-2015 NDSU 90.63% 1 ILL ST 71.88% 2 SDSU 65.63% 3 UNI 56.25% 4 YSU 50% 5 SIU 46.88% 6 IND ST 37.50% 7 WIU 34.38% 8 MO ST 28.13% 9 USD 18.75% 10
Nielson as HC at USD since 2016 NDSU 90.91% 1 SDSU 77.27% 2 UNI 63.64% 3 WIU 54.55% T4 YSU 54.55% T4 ILL ST 45.45% 6 USD 40.91% 7 MO ST 27.27% 8 IND ST 22.73% T9 SIU 22.73% T9

Thoughts from Ind St:
Much better overall energy and effort from USD in the loss. Several of the games to this point that USD lost, there was a concerning lack of fire and energy. That was not the case yesterday. USD lost yesterday because of execution.
Some Positives: It was good to finally get the USD running game going - averaging 4.4 yards a carry and totaling 227 yards. As we know the USD run game with the RBs has been almost nonexistent this year. I am left wondering if this was due to USD's better execution in the run game yesterday or just the opponent's lack of ability to stop the run. So far this year (prior to the USD game) Ind St had given up an average of 254 yards per game on the ground for a 5.3 yards per carry average. So compared to the average opponent Ind St has faced so far this year, USD did not do as well on the ground. Regardless, it was refreshing to see the RBs running with more purpose and determination along with the OL getting on their blocks more consistently. USD protected Simmons better and he had a good day - he was sacked 4 times though. Simmons completed 70% of his passes for 375 yards and had 46 positive yards rushing with a long of 24 (I still think he has the opportunity to sprinkle in a few more runs when the defense is giving that to him). FG kicking which has been a worry came through yesterday when called upone - making two kicks - one of which, although not a long attempt, was a pressure kick in OT. USD also won the time of possession battle. That doesn't happen very often. If before the game someone told me that USD was going to win the time of possession battle, rush for 227 yards and throw for 375 yards for over 600 yards total offense, I would have thought USD would win big.
Critical Errors: Slow start hurt the team. Thull mishandled the opening kickoff - fielding at the 7, fumbling and recovering at the 4. If he had fair-caught the ball cleanly, the team would get the ball at the 25. That error was like a 21 yard penalty. USD actually moved the ball that first possession to the 21 yard line and Diggs (RG) was called for a chop block. That killed the drive - USD punted and Ind St started their first possession at the SD 41. Ind St took full advantage of that short-field gift and scored a TD. Alex Gray had an unsportsmanlike penalty extending an Ind St drive - gave Ind St a 1st down at the USD 43. Ind St capitalized again on that short field gift and scored a TD. New WR Greenhaw fumbled after a catch at the Ind St 11 - that likely took points off the board and negated a 3 minute, 73 yard drive. Reed had an unsportsmanlike penalty later in the game that gave Ind St a 1st and 10 at the USD 25. Ind St scored on the next play with a long QB run USD gave up over 7 yards per rush. The Ind St QB averaged over 10 yards per carry. (194 yards total in 18 carries.) The Ind St main RB averaged 5.9 yards per carry and 125 yards total). It is worth mentioning that Ind St's best RB (one of the top RBs in FCS for the first half of the year) did not play due to a career ending injury. Can only imagine how much damage he would have done to our defense. Starting field position heavily favored Ind St. Our kick coverage is not good. In the first half USD's avg starting spot was the 23 yard line compared to Ind St starting at the 36 1/2 yard line. In the second half USD avg starting spot was the 22 yard line compared to Ind St starting at the 27 1/2 yard line. Starting field position is meaningful and it cost USD big. *** Edit left out in original post - WLB Coker missed an INT opportunity in the endzone in the 2Q - hit his hands and tipped back to the WR in the endzone. That missed opportunity was worth 7 points alone.
This was a team USD beat 56-6 last year. Ind St has improved significantly and USD has taken a big step backwards. There will be plenty of time after the season to speculate why they have taken a step backwards, but it is extremely disappointing to watch. Happy with the effort yesterday, but right now USD is not near good enough to win a game (even against a middle third MVFC team) without playing a very clean game. Giving up 7 yards per carry on the ground is a real killer. Would be hard to win a game with giving up that type of rushing average alone. The team has a long ways to go. Hope they are able to focus on improving for the final two weeks of the season. They still have the opportunity to finish strong. Do they have the discipline and focus to do so? Two more opportunities - make the most of them Coyotes.

I would certainly expect a void to be created by losing a player of Streveler's quality. Right now - I think this team is much more talented than the 2015 Yotes (the year before Streveler), but will likely not have a better record. The season gets to play out obviously and I am hoping they run the table and get to 6-5 - finishing the year with a win up in Brookings. That 2015 team took some beat-downs for sure, but also finished 3-5 in the MVFC and beat NDSU on the road. The 2018 Yotes to date have also had a few clunkers and beat-downs (Weber St, YSU, UNI, NDSU). They had an almost win at a Power 5 school, a sloppy win against a terrible Northern Colorado team, and its best win against another bottom half MVFC team in Missouri State (They are a solid FCS team just bottom-half MVFC). The other win was a road win at another bottom MVFC team in SIU. A road win in this conference is big no matter which team, but the fact is they are near the bottom of the conference.
For the record, I think Nielson can and will get it right. We are just unfortunately performing like we are further off from being a top-half MVFC team than I would have guessed coming into the year. I had hoped that while Streveler was here the rest of the team would progress around him more, so that when he left the incremental improvement at all the other positions would help the team hold on better than they have. Hope the team wins out. They have the talent - but they have had the talent all year. Leaders need to step forward now.

Coach Bob's Yotes best wins based on how the opponent finished the year
2017 Western Illinois 38-33 on the road - WIU was 8-4 overall and 5-3 in the MVFC 2017 Nicholls St 38-31 on the road in the playoffs. They were 8-4 overall 2016 Weber St 52-49 in 2OT at home. Weber St was 7-5 overall *** 2017 Drake 77-7 on the road - Drake was 7-4 overall - they are non-scholarship so I do not count this as a top win 2016 ILL St 27-24 at home - they were 6-6 overall and 4-4 in the MVFC 2017 YSU 31-28 at home - they were 6-5 overall and 4-4 in the MVFC *** 2017 Bowling Green 35-27 on the road - Bowling Green finished 2-10 - I count this as one of the best wins because they are BCS
Coach Bob's Yotes worst losses based on how the opponent finished the year
2018 YSU 17-29 on the road - YSU is currently 3-5 and 2-3 in the MVFC with a loss at home to non-scholarship Butler *** 2018 Kansas St 24-27 on the road - Kansas State is currently 3-5 - I do not consider this one of the worst losses since they are Power5 BCS 2018 UNI 28-42 at home - UNI is currently 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the MVFC - this remains to be seen - I think UNI is a solid team and this is not one of the worst losses 2016 SIU 28-35 on the road - SIU finished 4-7 overall and 2-6 in the MVFC
From a subjective perspective I think USD's best performances came against 2017 Bowling Green, 2017 YSU, and 2017 Nicholls St. I think our worst performances were against 2016 New Mexico (new team that could not stop the option - even a little bit), 2018 NDSU (steamrolled), 2018 UNI (turnovers and sloppy play), 2017 ILL St (just beat the hell out of us), 2018 Weber St (team got completely man-handled), and 2018 YSU (USD didn't show up to play and really only showed fire in the third quarter). Most heart-wrenching losses were 2016 WIU (USD fumble at the goal line about to score and put the game away. WIU ends up scoring and wining 34-35), 2017 SDSU at home 28-31. 2017 UNI on the road- fell apart at the end of the game with turnovers after a big lead. 2016 UND on the road - huge lead at half and completely melted down to lose in OT.
