I heard $100,000 plus they had to buy us a new opponent.
SDSU just bought a game with SUU for something like $140,000. We now have $100,000 in hand, a few more dollars should be able to buy us a decent game.

Interesting comments from the Lamar AD in today's P&D story yankton.net/articles/2011/02/17/sports/doc4d5ca60e1dd0f568583305.txtAccording to the Beaumont (Texas) Enterprise newspaper, Lamar did not pay a $100,000 buyout to USD for the cancellation because “the schools are in negotiations to play the game another season.”
“We’re trying a couple things,” Lamar athletic director Larry Tidwell told the paper. “We’re trying to switch some things around. If not, we’ll have to buy it out.”If it can't be done this year, assuming we have any reasonable nonconference options available for near-future schedules, I say we take the money and run.

Absolutely. We have 8 conference games, 1 BCS money game, and, hopefully, we have UND on the schedule next year. At most we have to find 2 games (if we don't play UND), which given the scheduling we've had to do the past copuple years should be a piece of cake. Make them pay.
Sayler sounds none too happy in that article. Judging from his comments he will not let Lamar off lightly. Their AD has a pretty carefree attitude about the whole deal. It sounds to me like there was no advance warning.
Keep in mind, Sayler just arrived here from Texas (Rice) less than one year ago.

Would be nice to see McNeese State pay us back the game they still owe us. I see they have the 17th of September open between their games with Missouri on 9-11 and Cal Poly on 9-25. I am still burned by that one and would love to see them take a beating in the Dome.

Lakesbison would go Peter "James" Bond if that happens.

I would doubt NDSU would be interested in coming to the Dome any sooner than they have to. However, if it meant not having a game on the 17th, I would gladly travel up to Fargo again.

I don't like the idea of going back to play NDSU. USD already gave the Bison one game with no return trip, whether by design or because of getting into the MVFC. Whether Lamar was coming or not USD still has 2 non D1 home games on the schedule and for a 4th year program that is at least 1 too many.
I have said this before but will reiterate USD really messed up when it agreed to these contracts of all the teams that backed out of return trips. I think that is another aspect where we really see the difference between Nielson and Sayler. Contracts should be written where a backout is going to be incredible difficult. With it happening by West Texas, Central Arkansas, McNeese and now little ficken first year program Lamar that is now a me problem, not a you problem. Fool me once shame on You, fool me 4 times shame on me.
Those broken contracts have really burdened the football team in this transition and now once again we are left with an empy slot on the schedule with no one to fill it out and more importantly only a 10 game schedule.
For USD the Lamar game is worth the same type of draw as it would be to lose about 5 or 6 home basketball games. Those 8,000 head draws are very important to the revenue of the athletic program.
I am in favor of getting a FCS team to come in that would take the payday game with no return trip attached. It looks like Eastern Washington did so and if they would I would think if the right program is open on that date it would be a possibility to get another to replace Lamar. USD has seemed to favor playing conference or non conference games from the West or South. I would like to see one of the teams from the Eastern portion of the country come in. If we have to make it a 1 for 1 contract I wouldn't mind so much. Even if we don't try to fill the open date I am still for a home and home with a program such as New Hampshire, U-Mass, Rhode Island, Duquesne etc. Or better yet how about a home and home against Harvard or Yale.
Thankfully we won't have scheduling issue thanks to these programs
North Dakota State South Dakota State Missouri State Illinois State Western Illinois Southern Illinois Indiana State Northern Iowa Youngstown State

The buyout for Lamar was pretty steep. USD can't help it if they are willing to pay the price to buy out. I don't see how the AD screwed up with this contract. What, next time make the buyout $200k? Maybe that's what it needs to be.

Maybe that's what it needs to be. You are exactly correct, make it more difficult. It's not like this has happened just once or twice. It's a trend that USD has this happen to them. I look at that as a USD problem as much as anything. It may be misfortune but a trend does not luck not make.

No we wont be switching any games or adding USD to the 2011 schedule. Season tickets are already on sale for our 6 home games

We're just talking about it. We know it isn't going to happen. I know, but sadly too bad this didn't happen any other year as we were struggling to find a fill in game the last couple years In fact Georgia Southern backed out of their return game to Fargo after both our teams went into the playoffs.
