Reading twitter again tonight - Jeremy Hoeck said that Jacobs, Ruiz, and McLeran did not practice today. He also added that Maag did practice and may be back for Saturday's game. The year was going to be tough enough without all these early season injuries. Depth is so vital. Next man up!

The year was going to be tough enough without all these early season injuries. Depth is so vital. Next man up! Difficult decision for the coaches - do you send someone who is not 100% back into the fray and risk re-injury, and possible loss for the balance of the season, or do you gamble with the underclassmen now and try to be at full strength for the conference games?

If indeed that is the choice, the answer is simple. You don't risk playing someone in a non conference tilt in order to assure he's ready for the conference season. One player is not going to determine the outcome of this game. But you can argue that 3-4 guys on the fence could. I'd rather win MVC games. Win or lose, this one will be in the books by 11 pm Saturday night and soon forgotten. If we go 6-2 in the Valley (and I'm not suggesting we will) but that would carry more weight than beating Montana. The people selecting the field for the playoffs will look at conference record first. And if Montana gets its teeth kicked in at Fargo like I think could happen, then a win over them isn't all that valuable.
Let's get healthy, and let our younger and more inexperienced players grow up, win or lose. Building this program the right way is at minimum a 4-5 year deal.

Hello everyone, I'm sure many of you made it over to view our board as well. But for those thay haven't I will give a quick run down on the griz expectations. The griz this year are very different than last year.
QB- Jordan Johnson will return this week after sitting out from a concussion. He should be his same old self, every accurate and very good about protecting the ball and keeping plays alive with his feet.
RB- Canada this year has been a little slower starting. He will hopefully break out soon. Travon van is another story he had 4 TD on 6 touches last week and has been moved to the slot aswell some. He did make some great plays making people miss at Wyoming. He is a HR threat no doubt
WR- best WR corps we have had in a long time. Henderson is now back, we have a few bigger guys in Jones and Rodgers. We have also been putting van in the slot to get him some time with the ball. This is by far our most dangerous position. Plus we moved SR WR Saylor to TE.
Oline- this is our weak spot. We lost two players before the seasob began and now we start 3 soph. We are coming along with 300 yards on the ground last week, however the blitz is our weak spot so I'm sure we will have many blown assignments. Our TEs are great passing threats. JJ has been using TE alot this year.
Dline- figured as one of the best in the nation. Wags and Holmes at DE. Wags is a stud with I think 4.5 sacks already and could have had two more. Lots of leadership at tackle and the depth should help vs the run thus year.
Lbs- we lost all 3 last year. 2 to the NFL. Put have no fear all 3 stepping up are all upperclassmen. The beef is lacking but the speed is great. We are much better at pass coverage with these 3 but not as stout in the gut
DBS- I'll put them all in one. Corners are expected to be a ton better as all are experienced now. However it's yet to be seen as we played running Wyoming and a DII. However saftey is the bright spot. Hermenson is Playing great and fills up the back end well. Then with rotation we stay fresh on the other side. Which stamina was a downfall last year.
SP. T- our returners look good with Henderson now back and is dangerous. Shaw the punter can really boom kicks and is so accurate, but is a slower kicker. We have 3 place kickers. Who k owe what they will bring. Could be good or bad. Idk what to expect from them.
Can't wait for Sat. See you guys at the game

Thanks mtgrizfan. Good insights.
Should be an interesting match-up from how you described the Grizz. I'm most interested in seeing how our OL stacks up against the Montana defense. I'm pretty confident we can pound the ball in the middle, just a little concerned about our pass protection since we don't know for sure the status of our center this week.

Thanks for giving us a detailed rundown of what the Griz bring to the table this year, this promises to be a great finale to the three year series.
Having the Griz on the schedule every year is definitely something I wouldn't mind, hope this little series picks up again when the schedule allows it

Just read through the Argus USD Chat from today - good updates. Mick is stepping up this year and even mentioned he is getting more time to cover the Yotes. Said he enjoys being able to be on the USD beat more. I really think he does what he can with the time he is allotted. I know work often prevents me from participating, so I am guilty of not helping the chat attendance but if anybody from this board could participate and doesn't currently, I think it would help.
Thanks for the coverage Mick!
Go Yotes!

Ideally with as tough as the MVFC is I would rather have one game against a BCS team, one game against a perennial bottom half big sky team, and two games against perennial bottom 25% FCS teams. That way if USD was solid they would have a realistic shot at being 3-1 heading into the 8 game conference schedule. They could go 5-3 in conference and still have a shot at the playoffs. Go 6-2 in the conference and it would be really likely to get in.

Well he just spent some time writing an article about the Bison Football Dynasty. www.argusleader.com/story/mickgarry/2014/09/10/college-football/15402807/Yes he did - it was well written in my opinion. At first I found it somewhat irritating. After thinking about it I changed my mind. NDSU has the most successful football program in the region, the MVFC, and FCS the past four to five years - and it is not even close. The USD alumni and casual USD fan base at large could actually learn something from the article. One of the lessons I would think for USD fans is "Hey, look what can happen if you rally behind and show pride in your local institution. You can have success on the National stage. You don't have to run to Nebraska, Iowa or Iowa State. You have the opportunity to build and be a part of a relevant program in your backyard." The growth in fans for USD athletics will come from two main areas. The first are the students - the university is working hard to get them in attendance and make it a positive experience so they have good memories and will return after graduation someday as season ticket holders. The second group of people are the large amount of USD alumni within 100 miles of Vermillion (the greatest concentration of which are in Sioux Falls). Many of those potential fans need to be educated on FCS and the quality of Division 1 football and basketball in the Dakotas. Currently many of them have not recognized the difference in product between 10 years ago and today. What SDSU fans and NDSU fans may not want to hear is not only do those USD alumni not recognize the difference and change at USD, they don't see nor do they care about the xdsu's. Being reminded that FCS football can be exciting enough to - consistently beat BCS teams and get enough National buzz and attention that ESPN Gameday comes to town not once but twice, is worthwhile. The xdsu's have done a good job converting their alumni into enaged fans. There are plenty of USD Alumni to target, they just need work. The amout of coverage specific to USD programs has been better this year from Mick. Couple that with all of the Midco Sports coverage - games and Coyote Corner will continue to help with visibility. If the programs , more specifically the men's programs can have some success, it sure would help. If SDSU's men's teams (FB & MBB) had the same results that USD's have had the past 5 years, would your fan base have grown at the same pace? My guess is no. I still am of the belief that it can be done at USD. There is no valid reason at all that they can't. I refuse to lower my expectations for the USD programs and would encourage all of us to continue to have extremely high expectations.

Good points OBC. If the Coyotes get a win this weekend at Montana, that will go a long way toward packing the Dome against NAU and starting to build some excitement around this team.

This is thread drifting a bit...
"The first are the students - the university is working hard to get them in attendance and make it a positive experience so they have good memories and will return after graduation someday as season ticket holders."
You hit the nail on the head here. This is the reason why our alumni base has not jumped on board, because when they were students here they didn't support USD athletics either, so why would they now? At the William Penn game, and every other football game over these last many years, I see the same alumni that I saw 20-some odd years ago when we were students attending football and basketball games. When we tailgate we reminisce with stories of basketball and football games from years past and talk about life now and what is going on at our local high schools, etc. There are far too many alumni who have no connection to USD. Whether you are an advocate for college athletics or not you have to admit the athletic arm of the university is a strong influence on maintaining alumni connections, and by connections I mean donations not only to the athletic dept but to the university in general. That is why it is important to have a successful athletic dept and to be successful in the high profile sports.

Looking forward to a fun night in Missoula tomorrow. My heart wants a comfortable win, but my head says it'll be another close one.
It's hard to get a feel for this Griz team after two games. The D looked solid against a weak Wyoming offense, but the offense was pretty out of synch for most of the game. I suspect that may have had something to do with Johnson's concussion, so hopefully he'll be back to his old self on Saturday.
We've got a ton of speed and talent on offense, but like others have said, the O-line is still a big question mark at this point.
The front 7 have looked pretty good, and Wagenmann has been playing like a man possessed. Look for him to give USD's young QB fits if your O-line doesn't contain him.
In any event, here's to a great game, and a great experience for any Yote fans making the trip!

Landed in Missoula 3 hours ago. Weather is sunny and expecting temps to be in the 60s by kickoff. I will tell you this, it is a confident group wearing red. They are up for the challenge. It is strength vs strength. Our offensive against their defense. Locals are nervous about tomorrow night. It just has a good feel to it. I like our chances.
