This is the real start of the season for the Yotes. This match-up will tell us more than the other two games IMO.
Keys to the game:
DL - find a way to control the LOS against a young Montana OL
DB - deal with a QB that can scramble and lengthen plays giving the Montana WRs a long time to get open
OL and RB - establish a run that we had for most of the game last year against them
QB - huge wildcard for USD - don't know what to expect
Special Teams - I am still concerned with our kick coverage. We haven't forced many punts this year - two I think total. On both of the punts I remember seeing us looking ripe to give up a punt fake.

Our offense will keep us in the game. If our receivers can catch the ball this week, we will be just fine.
Defensively, contain the run. Montana's OL is young. I don't recall Montana being a triple option team, so that's good. We showed Saturday we don't know how to defend that.
Special teams. We need to quit trying to be cute with these high-hangers on kickoff. Have Bergner boot it out the back of the endzone. Every time. Period.

Several times against Cal-Poly, they did the short high kick. It disappoints me. If you don't have the athletes on special teams to run down the field, hold their lanes, and make a tackle, you don't have a championship caliber team. I don't ever recall the Bison doing anything other than kicking the ball all the way down the field.

I think our offense will pull its weight, but the defensive line is a serious concern. What's most troubling is that we continue to speak in terms of "getting our guys back," but as far as I can tell, Ruiz is out of the picture and Praska is dealing with a chronic back issue (read: may never get healthy). That means Jacobs is, possibly, the only guy we're "getting back." Frankly, I'm not certain Jacobs' presence last Saturday would have resolved our struggles. I think we know less about our defense now than we did before the season kicked off in Oregon.

One other d-linemen that should be back soon is Maag. Played and sustained a hip pointer against Oregon. The addition of he and Jacobs to the dline group would make a big difference. With them back, all the true freshman could hopefully help in spot duty rather than as the go to backups.

I listened to the Coaches show tonight but did not get any clarity on some of the injured players. Anyone know the status this week on Jacobs, Maag, and McLeran? Montana has a good DL and having him would certainly make a difference.

I don't remember hearing anything about McLeran, perhaps no news is good news?

Some tweets from USD players saying Ruiz is now elligible to play DL this week. Can anyone confirm? Would be huge to get some reinforcements there this week.

Wow that could potentially be a huge relief for us. If the players are saying it, I'd be inclined to believe it, but the one rumor I've seen on here implied he may be in no shape to play yet

We could sure use the reinforcements at DL so that is good news. Watched the Coyote Corner last night and it sounds like Montana's OL is young (predominately sophomores) and their star QB has been dealing with a concussion and is questionable. The back-up QB is a 5th year senior who lit up a D2 Central Washington so not much drop-off there.
The Watch Party will start at 7 p.m. at Beef's North, with kick-off starting at 8 p.m. The Coyote paw beer glasses that sold out so quickly last time will again be available and we will also have door prizes like shirts, tickets, etc... to give away. The Sioux Falls Howling Pack chapter t-shirts will also be available for purchase. Lots of folks have been purchasing these shirts so if you haven't gotten yours, it's time to do so! Please help spread the word about the watch party and see you guys on Saturday night.
Go Yotes!!!

Our guys want this one bad. Always a fun trip to Missoula. Definitely one of the best atmospheres I have experienced. To me, this game is beginning to feel like a rivalry since we've played em close but fell short the last two years. We owe them one this year. Rivalry game = throw rankings, All-American statuses, pre-game hype, etc. out the window.
DL and secondary could be an issue for us (no surprises here). A young Montana OL may be a blessing for us. May not be able to manhandle them, but our youngsters up front should be able to hang in there with them. Will need to lean on our veteran LB core for run support and coverage.
Offensively, we will score plenty of points. I could see our run game sputtering a little bit since we only threw the ball 13 times against WP so they will load the box. Saegar is ready (no lack of confidence on his part if you've been keeping up with the tv interviews!)
I'll be down at OLC again in Vermillion. Look for the guy wearing red!
Fight South Dakota!
