As Jeremy Hoeck would put it, this comes under the heading of 'nerd stats', but looking at our 2 deep roster for yesterday, we really have a lot of younger players contributing, or close to it. Taking into account the offensive/defensive players, plus the specialty positions, we had 49 players listed in our 2 deep roster. In that number I counted 6 freshmen, 6 redshirt freshmen, 18 sophomores, 12 juniors, and 7 seniors. ((I could be off one or two here or there but this was my quick scan)) Thus, about 60% are underclassmen. Of the 7 seniors, 3 are JC transfers.
(One of those sophomores is Mike Meinert,#68, who has been filling in for Sam McLeran (RFR) at center, and in my opionion, has played well.)
Joe Glenn has been recruiting hard and give him another year or two of filling the roster and we have further reason to be optimistic.

It takes a long time to build a solid football program, and Joe Glenn is doing exactly that. Once we are completely full of his kids we will be a very deep, and very good football team. Winning games is only going to raise the level of the recruits we are bringing in too, so theoretically the recruiting classes should be getting better and better each and every year.
Glenn has been in the game for a very long time, has won three national championships, and knows exactly how to build a dynamite football program. His mark is going to be left on the program long after he decides to stop coaching.

I think we played a good game. Special teams were way better than they have been. Bergner looked good. He needs to kick the ball deep every time. Hopefully we can take advantage of the off week and get everyone healthy for conference play.

Well after having some time to reflect on this one, here are my thoughts.
First and foremost. I am absolutely thrilled and incredibly proud of our boys. It seemed like an inspired coyote squad and that's what we'll need going into conference.
Offense Saegar showed up and played like the quarterback we know he can be. He ran the ball great when he needed to get out of the pocket and made great decisions with the ball. His completion percentage isn't going to be great, but if he doesn't have an open option, I will take a throw away every single time. He threw the ball quickly this week, I am really happy with that. I thought the OL played great. Over 300 on the ground will win us a lot of ball games boys. Also zero sacks, some of that is Ryan throwing the ball instead of holding it back there, but nobody really got close to him at all. Our entire backfield continues to impress me. I'm a little concerned that Jasper went out early but I am extremely happy with the effort we are getting out of Roberts. He might be the hardest runner we have, maybe not the breakaway speed, but he will get downhill fast. Receiving core caught the ball when we got it to them. That's their job and they did well. Would like to see Ramsey get more touches, but I will never complain about offensive efficiency.
Defense Was very nice to see more bodies up front. Praska and Ruiz are big time additions to our DL. They are big boys and did well to stop the inside game. Happy to have them out there. Drew Iddings. Not much needs to be said about that young man. LBs did a great job again. Not sure Johnson quite played up to the hype yesterday but he is doing a fine job as a leader on the defense. He was drawing lots of attention from the two guards for NAU allowing Buscarini to have a breakout day. That kid was flying all over the field. Lage was his usual, consistent self. I thought our DBs were out of position a few times yesterday but overall were successful in stopping the deep ball. I was getting tired of the nickel and dime plays giving us headaches but we did a good job of limiting the yards after catch. Special Teams Great game for Bergner. Perfect on FGs so far. No complaints from me. Only thing I would like to address is the muffed punt. We can absolutely not have mistakes on special teams. Look back at the recaps for our games last year. Special teams cost us big time, and very well could again. It's a small parrty of the game but we have to be sharp here.
Final thoughts. Good atmosphere and great win. Students disappointed me again. Not sure how, but the university needs to get them more engaged, as we have all been saying for years. Should be a great week to rest up and get healthy before the meat of the season.
As always, Fight South Dakota!

Just watched the Midco replay and great game by the Yotes. Lots of talk about special teams doing great and I couldn't agree more. As for the muffed punt, Shufford should have just signaled for a fair catch, caught it and its end of story. He's young and was hoping instead to make a play for his team. I think that was just a sign of bigger things to come from that kid though as he matures. He did a nice job atoning for the mistake by tossing the 2-yard PAT fake to Potter. Speaking of Potter, the penalty he had was not acceptable and neither was Huffer's bone-head play that cost us a huge penalty. The after the whistle stuff like that and like Lewis had at Montana are HUGE momentum shifters for the opposition that can and have cost this team from being in the Win column. It has gotten better, but it just has to stop and we have to be a smarter football team than that. We should have had 2 more INTs as well, one to Graham that literally hit him in the hands and another that was through the hands of a Coyote defender earlier. This secondary however is becoming better every game. The few deep balls that were thrown were total strikes and there were 2 that I recall that were very well defended by Tellefson that were just perfect balls to the receivers. One was thrown by Pogh before he went out and the other by Cartwright down the right side-line after he came in late in the game. Hoping we make the most of our bye week to get healed up and put some more polish on a team that even with a few mistakes is starting to shine.

Please don't immediately attack me for beating a dead horse about being late to the Division 1 party. That is not my intent. Even though USD is now in its third season since finishing the Division 2 to Division 1 transition, the transition effects may still be present. For athletes which were recruited to USD as freshman, the seniors, as well as juniors who took a redshirt, are still athletes who were recruited to a team which did not qualify for post-season competition for either their first or their first and second years at the university. This MAY have hurt recruiting. Because of this, your senior class, as well as your redshirt junior class, may have missed out on some recruits which would have provided increased competiveness and depth to this year's team. As USD fans, you should look at this with optimism that your future teams should naturally mature into better quality teams than you have now. As an SDSU fan, it annoys me.

I understand your point, and my initial post on this topic was in no way intended to slight our junior and senior athletes. They came in at a challenging time, worked their tails off, and whether seeing the field or not this season, continue to contribute to the success of our program.

For being late to D1 we sure looked a lot better than NAU. After our first TD I turned to my buddy and said this game was over. Look on the field, look at the players, USD was bigger, stronger, and faster than NAU and it was noticeable The Coyotes certainly were passing the "eye test". NAU was a ranked team that is supposed to compete for a Big Sky title and they didn't look like they belonged in the same division as the Coyotes.
Following the results of the MVFC so far this season the Valley is just that much better than the rest of the FCS this year. It is going to be a grind and for whichever teams finish in the second half of the Valley standings, well, that is not an adequate reflection of how good of a FCS football team they really are in the grand scheme. Bottom division MVFC teams would contend for titles in other conferences.

I agree that our football team is still feeling some of the affects of the transition, and they aren't the only program that is. After seeing all the Dakota schools move up and succeed I am just so confused why we weren't all D-1 decades ago. I hope Joe sticks around for a while, he definitely has the energy to stay in the game for years to come. His recruits are only going to continue to get better, and I can see us being a playoff team as soon as next year (if the playoff committee honors the MVFC's SOS)

We are so close to being a great FCS team that I can taste it. We showed how good we can play on Saturday, even with some dumb penalties and a turnover. A change at the helm of the program would do nothing but hurt us right now. Joe was brought here to create a successful program after the transition. We have made some some big strides since Joe has been here, but we all know we aren't there yet. Joe knows it too. We need him to be here long enough to accomplish what we brought him here to do. Joe is too great of a recruiter and manager to let leave, no one Herbie could hire would land better recruits than Joe. Plain and simple.

The DBs played fairly well again against NAU, also just checking the MVFC stats and the Coyotes have 4 DBs in top 20 in passes defended category.
They will only get better with experience, Go Yotes!
