Well I'm bored with the bye week already. Let's get something started for SIU.
It's hard to tell much from their stats so far this season considering they played two teams I've never heard of and Purdue. The only game I've really looked at is their game against Eastern Illinois. That win for them seems like more of a collapse by Eastern in the second half than a great game from Southern. Pretty apparent in the scoring summary. Eastern put up 451 yds total offense compared to SIU's 379 but managed to lose the game 38 - 21. It seems they have a pretty good ball carrier in #31, finished at #7 in MVFC last season. We can expect to see him get most of the touches. As I recall, we have some pretty good ball carriers too... They are a pretty even run/pass sqaud.
Anybody else know anything about them? All I know is I'm excited.
Going to try and tune in to their game this weekend against WIU for a little scouting.
Fight South Dakota!

Fight South Dakota! Dale Lennon (HC) and now also the DC this year will have a good game plan for the Coyotes. He has matched up against Wes before when he was at UND. They are a physical team with a very good RB (perhaps fourth best behind NDSU, UNI, and SDSUs feature RBs). Their QB also looks the part. We all know that Lennon is going to make Saeger beat them through the air and do anything they can to plug up the run. I think if the defense and hang in there and the special teams does not implode somehow - this will be another close game that will be still in question during the 4th quarter. I think they are improved over last year and they were very good last year. They were 5-3 in the MVFC and beat SDSU in Brookings. If USD wins this game, it would be a huge step forward for the program. Going on the road with a young team overall, with a backup QB at the helm and get a win? Can't wait to see. Hopefully Siu offers a good streaming video of their games.

I really thought that Southern Illinois was going to put up a much better fight against Purdue, and their win against EIU isn't holding a lot of weight, but their game against Western Illinois this week will be very telling of what's in store for us in Carbondale. Our win against NAU was a great one, but certainly not a landmark win. Beating SIU on the road would absolutely be a landmark victory, and starting 1-0 in conference play will have our guys really flying high heading into the D Days game against UNI.
Looks like this is the one road game that is not on TV this year, I also hope that SIU has a good stream for us.

Western Illinois had a 14-10 lead at halftime over SIU, but really stalled in the second half as Southern Illinois went on to win 34-17. Western Illinois could only get 2.1 ypc, and it certainly doesn't seem to be due to a stellar rush defense on SIU's end, meaning that this Western Illinois team is incredibly one dimensional (49 pass attempts today, they know that they can't run). Western Illinois is going to be the last place team in the conference, has zero running game, and SIU still couldn't find any comfort until the closing seconds of the third quarter. I can't say I'm impressed by SIU, but all I am going off of is box scores that don't tell the whole story.
If we are able to move the ball through the air we will have a very good chance of getting a landmark victory. We are going to be well rested, healthier than we have been in the last few games, and full of confidence coming off a win over a ranked opponent. This bye week is coming at about the best time possible, two full weeks for our guys to heal up and figure out the opponent could be the difference in this one.
The one thing I can say with certainty, it's going to be a battle. Let's give them all we got! Go Yotes!

More important question mark for Saturday. How will I be able to watch this game? I thought I read somewhere on here this was not going to be televised by anyone. Does anyone know If SIU has some sort of online streaming video for sale?

Looks like access to their online stream is ten bucks. I'm gonna have to look around and see what quality the stream is. Hopefully it isn't one of those single camera feeds where you can't really tell where the ball is since it's such a wide angle

I wonder what the delay is on a live stream like that? My ideal situation would be to HDMI the laptop to the TV and listen to the game on the radio instead of whatever sound they have.

Backup center Mike Meinert has a broken bone in his snapping hand. He can have surgery meaning his season is over, or cast it and play guard the rest of the year. He has done a great job filling in for McLeran. McLeran is slated to be back this week. If he can't go or if he reinjures himself, that will put us in a position to play a third string Center.
Jordan Roberts is out this game with a concussion.

The official word on Meinert is that he will have a cast on his snapping hand and wait until after the season for surgery. Macleran will be the center with Meinert as the first backup at both guard spots.

I heard some chatter about Nick Olsen getting a few reps this week at practice, so that would be my best guess.

I saw the Howling Pack is having a watch party at Czechers in Yankton. Anybody know if they are having one at the Varsity again? Would like to stay in town. This is an important one on Saturday. I am pretty confident we will gain plenty of yards on these guys. I was talking to some people around town yesterday, and they were telling me SIU's front 7 on D really stands out as poor on tape. Now it could all be nonsense, but I like our chances running the ball straight at them regardless. They will try and make us throw the ball, and I'm fine with that. All you read about on the boards is how one dimensional our offense is, but maybe that's because we have been able to hold our own being one dimensional. Saegar is still basically untested. He had a couple of bad throws against Montana, but the DL was killing him all night in Missoula. Look at 2 weeks ago, he threw the ball on target when he had somebody open. The fact is, nobody knows just how good or bad the kids arm is. What we do know from the NAU game, he knows how to throw the ball away and if he sees an opening he WILL pick up the first down with his legs. He rushed for over a hundred against NAU, and I don't remember a single designed QB run. He stepped up in the pocket, didn't have a good option, took off, and (my favorite part) finished the run with a slide or step out of bounds. Our defense will be tested this week. But they have been tested all season. First it was the big question mark in the secondary. They have held their own. They get beat over the top occassionally, but I have been pretty happy with their play for the most part. Everyone was so worried when we had to start playing true freshmen on the DL, they have matured faster than we all expected and our vets are slowly returning to the starting line-up. They have some good weapons on offense, but so do we. If we don't play sound defense, this one could turn into a shoot out. I've been wanting to get this going for a while and now seems like a good time as we enter conference play. Let's hear some coyote keys to victory. My KEYS TO VICTORY 1- Contain Mycole Pruitt - Stand alone best receiving tight end in the country, we can't expect our LBs to run with him all day so we need to have a safety key on him 2- Establish the run - Only 1 out of the last 44 teams SIU played rushed for over 200. We can beat that 3- Win the turnover battle - this team is too efficient on offense and capable of big plays to give them a short field www.siusalukis.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/093014aab.html - SIU Game Notes Final Thought Maybe I'm alone on this one, but it seems to me that they hang their hat on beating up on small schools. We could have huge offensive and scoring numbers too if we scheduled Taylor and SEMO. Sure William Penn wasn't great, but they are undefeated besides their loss to the Yotes, including a win over Taylor... Fight South Dakota

Not sold on Saeger's ability to pass, yet. Sold on his ability to run. One name we haven't heard hardly at all this season, Riley Donovan. 7 catches for 91 yards in 4 games. Either it is because the ball is being spread out to more receivers or it is due to the QB's inability to get him the ball downfield. I'd like to see Donovan get heated up in order to take some pressure off the run game with teams stacking the box, because you know that is what is going to happen to stop our run game.
