We have our change to the basketball program and last night is an indication of how far a program can come in a fairly short time period. I believe the right coaching staff with the right assistants can produce a dramatic turnaround in year #1 but for sure in year #2. I was just as excited about the U's performance vs. Creighton an anyone, but lets not blow this out of proportion. We still lost....and we are 3-7....and we have lost at home to Youngstown St., and to Wofford, Sam Houston St., Fairfield, and Utah Valley...not exactly basketball powerhouses. I agree that I think Coach Smith was a good hire and has breathed some new life into the MBB program. But lets not crown him king yet because he almost beat Creighton, who by the way is picked to finish 9th in the Big East this year. I agree that Joe is absolutely the best option at this time. Until we commit to match the financial support that our competitors give their football programs, it doesn't matter who is the head coach.

But I really wanted to hang this poster on the sidelines the next time YSU came to town.

I saw these today too. I hope for the sake of everyone else in the MVFC these recent articles are correct and not the ones from a couple days ago. It would be good for the conference but would make YSU very tough.

Agree with keeping in context the Mens BB program and current progress, it will take time like FB. Don't agree with shrugging off Wofford, and even Sam Houston State as solid BB teams this year.

Didn't say they weren't solid basketball teams. I said they were not basketball powerhouses. Every team we lost to in football was solid, also played a lot of powerhouses and lost too. Just saying lets not look through rose colored glasses with MBB for ALMOST beating a down Creighton team in a let down situation after they beat their in state rival in an emotional game 2 days prior.

I could be completely wrong...which is the case more times than not, But I have a hard time picturing Pelini as a FCS coach. I know its his hometown school, I know he says he wants his kids to go to Cardinal Mooney, but I can't see it. Pitt makes perfect sense to me. A hard nosed community with lower expectations, less of a fish bowl, in the coal belt, where Pelini found a lot of his kids at NU. Seems like a perfect fit.

Pelini actually found very few kids from that area - his hometown in particular. His GA, Vince Marrow, found several. However, when Vince was passed up for a full time AC job in favor of lateral move for waste of space Barney Cotton (who couldn't cut it with the OL), Vince took a job with Mark Stoops' new staff at Kentucky. Pre-Vince and Post-Vince, Bo has struck out with the Ohio area. Despite having guys like Rich Fischer and John Papuchis from the Northeast, he pretty much struck out there as well. Bo would be a great DC somewhere. He knows X's & O's and can motivate kids when he is at an intimate level. Bo is a TERRIBLE CEO. He completely failed in assembling his coaching staff - hiring buddies and inexperienced hacks. He is terrible with recruiting and doesn't understand the global aspect of coaching. At a place like YSU, I could see him doing well with much less on his plate, but at the FBS level he will never be anything more than a mediocre HC.

I completely agree with you on everything you said about Bo and his ability as a head coach. Being around him a couple of times at clinics and when he came into recruit a couple of kids that I coach, his ego and personality just put off a vibe that he thinks he is way better than he is. That's why I don't know if he would be interested in the YSU or any other FCS job. I think he would feel like it is beneath him. I see him coaching as a FBS coordinator or in the NFL before I ever imagine he is an FCS head coach. Like I said though....I am wrong a lot.

Pelini did find his nephew, Mark Pelini, from Cardinal Mooney in Ohio, who is a fan favorite down here in NE by the way(sarcasm)!

Lots of sources now saying Pelini will be the head coach at YSU. Wow!
