I like the sideline switch for the teams. I think its better long term. I cant imagine its any less hostile in the fargodome for our guys than what opposing teams will have to deal with from our students. Is suppose to be hostile and uncomfortable for opposing teams. I applaud this move.

It probably shouldn't be, but in my mind this is a benchmark game Saturday. Drake played what appears to be a decent North Dakota team fairly close. Granted, they scored at the end to make it that way, but nonetheless it is what it is. It appears our defense has improved, and we are going to rely on the run game to win ball games. That usually means games aren't blow outs. I would be happy to keep Drake at 13 or under, and get 27 or more on them. This is a home opener, and for several reasons we need to look pretty good. It would help with confidence to be 2-1 heading into Youngstown State game. YSU is pretty darned good, in my mind, good enough for playoffs, and that would ( or could ) be a signature win, but first we have to play well this Saturday. On a side note, there is going to be a massive tailgate on the far end of the concrete on east side of Dome where several ( around 40 ) former players and alum of USD will be tailgating. Cmon over and have a beer and shoot the $hit with these guys, many of them are characters. Let's have an enthusiastic tailgate and carry it over into the Dome. I would like to see a big change in how our crowd acts and cheers for the Coyotes. It would be huge to make this a really lousy place for visiting teams to come. We can be loud, and we should be. Saturday is going to be fun. I couldn't agree with this first paragraph any more. I hate to keep calling every game a must win/benchmark/litmus test, but last week's game was, and with the win, this week's is even moreso. Think back to last year, we didn't beat Oregon, but it was certainly a big game. The yotes came out FLAT the following week, at home, against William Penn. We have to avoid that this week. Good teams win their winnable games decisively. Drake is a very winnable game. The line started at 21, which made me raise an eyebrow. The bettors jumped on it and immediately brought it down to 17.5. I hope we prove them wrong. This team needs be consistent in all 3 phases of the game week to week. Let's make it two weeks in a row and hit the conference schedule with a full head of steam!

The bettors who know nothing about FCS football jumped on it because Drake played UND close. They were playing the scoreboard watching game. UND was playing in the very definition of a trap game, not surprising it turned out close on the scoreboard.
Drake is a non-scholarship FCS program with name recognition due to its basketball program. The quality of play is mid-D3 level. I fully expect, and will be disappointed if USD doesn't win this one by 21+. In fact, the Yotes should win this game by way more than that. Yotes 41 - Drake 10

Yote 53- I hope you're right. I'm staying away at 17.5 or 21. It's tough enough to hit the 53% required to break even at -110, let alone hitting the 55% to break even on these -120 FCS games!

FWIW, Phil Steele published comprehensive FCS power rankings (1-125) before the season. USD was ranked 51. Drake was ranked 73. Drake is riding a streak of eight consecutive winning seasons and, according to Steele, returns 17 starters. Teams that harbor an expectation of winning are always trickier to navigate. I expect to win, but we could very easily lose outright if we come out as flat as we did last year against William Penn. Shouldn't happen in a home opener against a team with some name recognition. It will really be interesting to see how well we establish the run. UND carried the ball 36 times for 25 yards!

Gameday tomorrow. Here's my take on what we need to do to make it 2-1 going into DDays.
1. Don't play down to the competition. We are the favorites this week and we should be. According to the Drake boards, they're pretty banged up coming into this one. Get up and keep your foot on the gas. Put on a show for the students and keep them interested.
2. Block for Bouma. We did a pretty nice job opening up holes against Davis. Let's keep that going. Our running game depends on whether or not we can win on the inside. Especially with this Drake team that will (at least I suspect they will) give us a lot of cover 1 looks. If we can win the inside running game, that will tighten up the secondary and open up the playbook. If it was me, I'd have the ball in Fredericks' hands and let him turn the corner.
3. Pressure the QB. We had four sacks last week and I'd hope we can get in the 3 to 4 range again tomorrow. Iddings is a guy I've been waiting to see show up on Saturdays and it finally happened last week. I expect him to cause a lot of problems for that Drake OL.
Should see a big coyote win tomorrow which is something the team really needs. It's all mental tomorrow. We are the better team, we just have to play like it.
Get some sleep tonight yote fans. See everybody at the tailgate nation. Plan on cracking the first Miller Lite at about 9 oclock.

The UND weekly show on Midco mentioned 3 of Drake's starting OL are out or banged up pretty bad. Hopefully that makes things easier for us. I would like to see us test the waters a little with some plays down field or as mentioned at least get outside some.

It will be fun to see a little football back in the dome especially with the outcome a little more in doubt than the blowout that was expected when the schedule first came out. I will probably be watching online. If the Yotes can run the ball even close to how they did against UC Davis I can see a comfortable win today but if Drake can manage to slow down that ground game than things may get a little more complicated.
I am picking South Dakota 27-10
2 weeks from now this season really starts to get it's legs with a tough Youngstown team coming in. I am looking foward to seeing how that game plays out but USD must first take care of business today.

Yotes just got an INT and returned it to the Drake 1. SD runs it in and it's 7-0 Coyotes. Good to see the Yotes back in the traditional Red Jersey Red Helmet look.
