When you say we fired a successful coach 4 years ago are you implying that we should not have never fired Meierkort. He was successful at one point but he was completely losing that program. They couldn't win on the road to save their life. His team had talent but no discipline whatsoever and they were under coached. Meierkort was successful no question but many peoples arguments were that he did so in a depleted NCC and as his tenure grew and he faces stronger schedules his teams would fold under adversity. Meierkort did an amazing job for 3 years but he lost the program plain and simply and his best case senario in the Great West Conference may have been break even. In the MVFC at very best case senario he would have been 4-4 and I doubt the Yotes would have been that good under him. The Yotes will get this thing right eventually. There will be alot of good coaches chomping at the bit to get a job in the MVFC. I'm not implying anything. I'm telling you that's exactly how I feel. But if there were off field issues that warranted it...fine. But not for performance issues. You say they were under coached. From that statement I'm assuming you are a coach, at minimum a former player, and you have to tools and skill sets to make that analogy. Your next statement says as his tenure grew, he faced tougher schedules his teams folded under adversity. Let me think about that. He knocked off Big 10 Minnesota, beat #1 Eastern Washington soundly and rarely lost in the Dome. The teams he supposedly "break even against" are now members of the Big Sky, and two of them doing well. Next: 4-4 in The Valley. Hmmm, new to D1 FCS, and you would be 4-4? I think, and I stand corrected, you might be the only one that wouldn't have been happy with that scenario if it played out as you predicted. Regarding his coaching staff, for what he could pay them, I thought he did a hell of a job. I happen to know and understand the budgets we've had got the last 15 years, and we are always last. Always. If President Abbott says he is commited to winning, and that he will find a way to fund it, then that's when things will start to change. You can't buy champagne on a beer budget. And I emphasize President Abbott will have to find it because by your own admission, you aren't going to buy tickets till they win. Let alone join the Howling Pack. Nope, you're going to sit at home and watch for free while everyone else on this board buys tickets. So until we get the Dome renovated, and the budget up to par, we will have to deal with what we have. As far as good coaches chomping at the bit, we will see. They are going to want to know the commitment because a 1 year contract is all they can count on. Many "good coaches" won't come because of that. What Coach Joe Glenn did for USD is off the charts. He epitomizes what it truly means to be a Coyote. And as far as Wes goes, what he did as a player warrants a great deal more respect than the bashing we have all been guilty of. I'm sick and tired of the constant criticism. Sure I wished they did some things different, but news flash here...IM NOT THE COACH. These kids bust their ass and deserve our support. In closing, I really wished I was your boss. I would love to evaluate your performance and rant or rave on the Internet. I have said several times, have a solution in mind other than firing. I seriously can tell you've never put your butt on the line and risked it all. If you had, you would be more compassionate.

One last thought. On occasion, USD has been relevant in football. Salem era, one year of Cooper, the Tripplet era, and some of the Meierkort era. Other than that, we weren't relevant. Same story at SDSU. But we were far more relevant than they were over same time frame. A lot of years we were flat out awful. But now we have a chance at new life, but we're behind again. SDSU going D1 ahead of us sealed our fate short term. Long term, this is a fight we can and will win.
So to pretend we are in the likes of Nebraska are absurd. We are who we are. I know we can win being who we are, but the question is can we put the game plan together to do so? Will people come from SF or SC and have a god time tailgating, or will they sit at home until we win? Not only do we need to critique our staff, we need to critique us as fans. Do we do all we can? My blood pressure I bet right now is through the roof. Lol. But I love this place so much so I will fight to do what's right.

The Yotes' situation is somewhat of a vicious circle. To be consistently successful in college football, you need to be able to recruit well. To recruit well need good (renovated) facilities, which you need funding for. To get solid funding and financial commitment, boosters & donors usually want to see some wins and progress, but to win you need good recruits, who want to see facilities, .......so on and so forth. I agree with yoteforever that constant coaching change is not the answer. When Glenn got here, I hope everyone realized that this was not going to be an overnight turn around. Ed had success, but there were issues going on inside of the program that needed change. Joe needs time, we are getting better. We are getting more donations, from what I have heard. There is life and momentum inside the program that wasn't there when Ed was coaching. I know its been 4 years, but to really change the culture and get this program where Joe can take it, it may take a few more years. What we ABSOLUTELY do not need is to take a flyer on someone and lose the momentum that we have gained the last 4 hard years. I don't think that there is a lot of people who will claim that USD Football is not in a better place now than it was 4 years ago. Isn't that what we are looking for? I know that we all want to be MVFC contenders and nationally relevant but we have to be realistic as well. I think we are improving and the next 7 games will hopefully attest to that. if not then the administration has a difficult choice to make. Like yoteforever said though, WE have the choice to come to the Dome, be loud, support the players(who are the most important, we get so caught up in coaches sometimes we forget that these kids are why we love USD football), and make USD football games a great environment to play in.

If we had lost a hard fought contest to YSU I don't think this thread goes ten pages and the conversation turns the direction it has.
I can understand why so many people are upset and are to the point of throwing their hands up. I don't blame them as I'm at that point too.
Unlike some people, I'll still go to the games. I'll still buy tickets. I'll still join the HP. But I really don't have expectations for this team this season, I'd be surprised if we won another game. My approach is going to be that I plan on having a good time on Saturdays. If we win, great, but I'm not going to stress over it. I don't get paid to stress over it. That is for the people who get paid to put a product on the field. If they fail to put a winner on the field then changes will eventually happen. You can feel bad for coaches who get fired, but this is the business they have chosen. They know the drill, win and you stay, lose and your gone. Every coach knows he is just temporarily holding the seat until the next guy gets hired to replace him (unless he is one of the very, very select few in the history of college football).

What life and momentum inside the program is there now that was not there 4 years ago. You say that there is more momentum now and USD football is in a better place then they were 4 years ago. What do you definate momentum as? This program has done pretty much next to nothing over the last 4 years to improve itself. What tanglible thing has the program done to improve because I can't think of one. Last year the Yotes sunk to about as low of a level as a program can sink to and guess what they did to change thing up. I will tell you, nothing. Pretty much everything is the same now as it was last year and as it was 4 years ago. If it takes time to build a program, isn't 4 years enough time to at least see some signs of improvement. As I said before Ed Meierkort needed to go, and if you don't agree with that than why couldn't he get a decent job at another school after he left the Yotes. He ended up coaching high school football in Florida. I liked Ed personally and I don't care what anyone else says. That is not why I wanted him gone, it was because the program itself was regressing. Coyote football was on a 20 year high during the 2005 and 2006 seasons and the momentum now is nowhere close to where it was then. Even during Ed's very best seasons his team still would not take their game with them on the road and it cost the Coyotes one playoff spot in 2005 and cost them 2006 home field advantage which they sorely needed. When things were going well Ed's teams were awsome. When things were not or when they faced adversity they folded often especially when their schedule toughened up. It's better to go through coaching carousels until the right coach is found rather than settle for being a bad program in hopes that the program will improve with no evidence that it will. There is no real evidence that the Coyote program is improving other than an isolated win against UC Davis which the team started showing their second half "play not to lose" mentality. When the Coyotes can run the football everything is well and they tend to play good but when their bread and better is stopped they tend to have no real answers as to how to show an alternate method to success. There is no adaptability to this Coyote team. The same things showed up in the Youngstown game that we have seen for the last 4 years. The Coyotes self destructed as much or more than Youngstown actually beat them. Alot of it was timid coaching. I have no problem waiting to see what happens this year but I cannot understand why any kind of a prevailing thought is that the Coyotes are currently headed in the right direction after the game against Youngstown. The problem has always been the MVFC for the Coyotes and nothing has changed to date to think that problem in on the right path to a cure. Our administration had a clear choice a few years ago. They could have taken the big sky or the MVFC/Summit. What program in it's D1 infancy could have had the kind of decision that the Yotes did. The admin stared that decision right in the face and concluded that the Yotes belonged in the MVFC. Maybe they decided that just being in the conference and playing SDSU and NDSU was good enough. Maybe winning was secondary in their thought process. As far as one year contracts being a hinderance I actually disagree. What if Glenn had 3 more years left on a contact right now. I don't think that factor is gonna stop an aspiring coach. It certainly didn't stop Craig Smith or Amy Williams and I don't think having the option for multiple year contracts would have garnered coaches that would have been better. The Yotes will be able to get a hell of a good coach for the football program if that decision is upon them this winter. The lack of multi year contracts won't make a different IMHO.

Someone other than me? Please!!! I will admit I did not read all of that . . . well crap. I took the overwhelming advice from the board and only read the first and sometimes last sentence or what he tries to pass off as a sentence. I am sure there is a quote from a wise man that would illustrate the futility of arguing with those that do not listen or understand what they hear from others, but admittedly those quotes are not my strong suite. I was at the game in Saturday and was of course disappointed. The defense held themselves together well until special teams and offensive mistakes wore them out. They were able to get some stops and turnovers which is always a good sign. The offense looked anemic but as I learned after the game was playing against the #1 defense in the FCS. These are simple observations that someone with a some experience playing the game or being around athletes or the intelligence of a small dim bulb could make as well. Simple answer for what do the Yotes need to do to be successful? Work and work hard. It will not happen over night. School that are successful overnight often times have done so after cheating and that is not the way to do things. Now after my little attempt at being helpful I am sure we will be inundated with accusations of unfairness and favoritism. Maybe I have read a few of those posts .

Interesting. If I would have listened to everyone else and have been force fed the red cool-aid I would have picked the Coyote to win on Saturday against Youngstown because as much as people want to discount my posts I remain the only one on this board to get it right on Saturday. As sure as some people were that the Coyotes would win I perhaps was branded the fool for not being a total believer and going with the majority opinon. As it turns out maybe I was the wise man and everyone else the fools. People may not like my opinion but when it comes to predicting the outcome of how Coyote games will turn out I kind of like my opinion in comparison to everyone's elses. To those that discount my posts as total hogwash, maybe you could learn a thing or two from what I say as well. One thing that continues to boggle me is how so many people believe this years Coyote team is or was so much different than last years version without anything really changing in the off season. Logic suggests that the team would continue to struggle this year. There are no upgrades to any of the coaches and no real upgrades to any of the players to suggest anything different. Folks this is the same old team we had last year.

This fan wants what is best for the long term good of the school. I can put the short term aside for the betterment of the long term.

I could care less if you picked Y-State to win but I would rather see improvement and effort on the field. I saw both on Saturday. Of Course I should be smart enough to not argue the point of effort to you after the great volleyball debate of 2012 (I don't remember the year bu '12 sounded good)but I cant stop myself. I have said my piece and now will take the advice of our admins and move on. I am done with you and this thread. Well until you say something else equally dumb as what brought me out of my hibernation which should be any minute.

You are funny. Dumbluck pick huh, despite Vegas having Youngstown favored in the game. I supposed according to you Vegas is dumb as well. How else do their casinos make all their money. It's called playing the odds. Getting the best of betters that make decisions that come from the heart and not from the brain. I personally cheer with my heart and analyse with my brain. I suggest that you do the same. Was there improvement on the field on Saturday? Maybe I need to rewatch the game again as I must have really missed the boat on that one. So bigoyote with your infinate wisdom tell us by how many points the Coyotes will beat Western Illinois by tomorrow. I will be waiting for your response along with Yoteforevers response. If things are truly different this year please tell me how this year is playing out any different than the last 3 years have. What has really been different cause I can't really think of anything too substantial.
