Great comments; we could use some more...
A look back, if it's okay: I remember the Joe Salem days. He absolutely hated losing to the ND schools. He finally adopted a power offense using the wishbone (anybody remember?) The opposing team knew what was coming but often simply could not stop it. He recruited players around that system. We recruited speed. We used to say as students that "speed kills". We'd sit back and watch the Coyotes run around, and finally through the opponent's defense. Every now and then we'd throw a pass and an undersized but fast receiver would haul it in (all right Dwight Duncombe, I'll give you my due). Few teams run that kind of offense nowadays, but when your recruiting ability is limited, you make the best of it.
Whatever we do, I know we have to be the best at it. I'd also have to agree with the Youngstown poster above: recruit speed.
What do we do now? Prepare for Western Ill. Bouma is likely out for a week or two, therefore, get an outside running game? Pass more often to your fullback? I don't really know.... but I do know we need to have a better identity on offense since back in the days when we ran the option.

I remember the Salem days and the wishbone. We'd rush for 400+ yds many games and as coyote70 said would hit Dwight on a long pass occasionally for a TD and he'd do his back flip after scoring. He was on national sports TV highlights with that move. The option was run very well by the Yotes in those days. I agree we don't have a strong identity now except some inside power. Personally I like a varied attack similar to Youngstown. On their first drive they mixed things up well and drove as I recall 80 for a TD with no real long gains just 7 yd run here, 8 yd pass there, etc. I know we can't convert quickly to that kind of offense. Depends on recruiting, practice practice practice, etc. Still think with a week off we could have put in 2 new plays without any problem. We have some great athletes but need more with speed and as everyone knows you can't teach speed. As other posters have mentioned I don't like a lot of out patterns on passing where the sideline is another defender. Anyway score wise the game appeared not to be close but actually turned on a few key plays--dropped TD pass, fumbled punt at the 3, penalties here and there when O was driving, INT with a deflected pass off a helmet(how often do you see that!), no replay on what appeared to be a forward pass not a fumble, etc. Certainly wasn't our best effort this year and YU is a very good team. Cut down on the mistakes and we can win some games!! Go Yotes!!

Anyone else remember the day we had five rushers over 100 yards? It was in the mid to late 80s but that was a great day! It's a bit of a thread drift, but this thread is almost run it's course so.....

I do remember five rushers for over 100 yds each in one game and looked it up on Yote Media Guide. It was in 1996 vs St Cloud in the Dome for 581 total rushing yds. It used to be listed as an all time NCAA record at all levels for number of 100 yd rushers in a single game and that probably still stands.

www.argusleader.com/story/sports/college/university-of-south-dakota/2014/12/24/budget-barrier-winning-glenn-says/20878539/USD officials say that the budget is no barrier to winning in football. USD's budget is or was the lowest at 2.56 million. NDSU's was 4.44 million. I would say that is a big difference. However SDSU only has/had a football budget of 2.995 million which really isn't that big of a difference from where USD is and their's is the 3rd smallest in the conference. They don't have to use their budget as an excuse but rather they are simply much more resourceful with what they have. They win with what they have and USD should be able to do the same. The performance on Saturday had little to do with budget and moreso to do with coaching and overall talent on the field. That is a coaching issue and a recruiting issue more than a budget issue. The budget doesn't force a program to run an offense that might have worked in the 80's but is antiquated these days. Joe Glenn is the coach and GM of the program. He decides the players including recruting, he decides the coaches and he decides the philosophies used. The budget doesn't seem to be an issue when talking about the other programs, especially basketball. The facilities maybe aren't the best but I don't think they are the worst either. I personally like the dome as a facility. Listened to Stig on the Monday night SDSU radio program and he commented that one of the reasons it was so difficult to compete with NDSU FB was money. A couple areas mentioned where having less money shows up were in recruiting and travel. Per the above numbers, we are short of SDSU's FB budget by over $400,000, and nearly $2 million short of NDSU. If it is used effectively, money talks and BS walks.

"if used effectively" is the key. SDSU has kind of mastered the art of using what they have effectively. USD can do that some day as well. Stig definately has a point about the difference between their budget and NDSU's because there is a significant difference. NDSU has an advantage with their budget but even with their budget they have to be at least somewhat smart with it to be a good program. I can agree that NDSU is a different animal than USD but SDSU really is not. The programs are similar in spending and USD had the better facility (or at worst on equal footing) for football for years but that didn't seem to help them much. I don't think any amount of money under 5 million would make the current program a winning program in the MVFC.
My list of most important factors for a winning or losing program
1) coaching - good or bad coaching can alter alot of other deficiencies or strengths within a program 2) recruting - some may disagree but I think Meierkort was rather good at this 3) Budget - obviously important 4) Facilities - important but over rated compared to the other factors - the dome was one of the best facilities in all of D2 and after 1986 it wasn't much of a factor for spurring on winning football

Since this thread is kind of supposed to be dying soon I figured maybe this was the appropriate place to put this. I think some of you might be interested in some of the things that were said about USD on the SDSU sports chat this week at the Argus Leader. If you think I jump the gun on things they were actually talking about possible head coaching candidates next year for the Coyotes. Even yours truly hasn't started that talk yet.

to my recollection it was more than just a throw away comment and there was at least one name thrown out there. It is on the Argus Leader Chat. I don't want to be the first on board with speculating on new coaches before this year is even close to being over. I will go along with that type of discussion but I don't want to be the first one to lead the way in speculating on things such as that. I will let someone else lead the way on that and respond at some point in time.

Ok it was Jed Stuugart (spelling) of USF. USF I believe is currently #4 in D2. They have made the transition to the higher level quite well.

When you are 4 games into a season, your record is 2-2, and you've played (1) FBS team, (1) non schlorship D-1 team, and one team from the Big Sky, and one from the Valley, although the record has one less win than we hoped for, quite frankly given our past 3 years, 2-2 isn't horrible. What set off everyone's ugly disposition, mine included, was not the loss Saturday, but how we lost. It quite frankly threw me for a loop as well.
I've said before, and I'll say it again, we are better. How many wins that translates into is unknown. Based on last Saturday, it would give the appearance we might not win again. However, I'm the eternal optimist, and I'm willing to give these guys some breathing room and give a better showing of themselves this weekend. There are a lot of things that concern me, some in the present and some into the future, but I know from personal experience that teams can turn the corner. Say what you want about the YSU game, but they are a top ranked team if they play like that. We didn't get best by the University of Shitty Pkayers, we got beat by a DAMNED good YSU team that played very well on defense. And say what you want about Pelini, but there's a reason he coached at a Power 5 school. He's good. He might be an a$$hole, but he can coach.
Listen, it's no secret if we play like we did on Saturday, no one from the staff will be here next year. Hell, everyone knows that. But we have 7 games left, and I for one am not going to throw anyone on this staff under the bus. They deserve our support, and they will get mine. Have all the talk you want about hiring this guy, or that guy, but Joe Glenn is my coach, and will be for sure till late November. If he steps down, or administration makes a change, then I'll support that as well. And I will join Howling Pack, and I will assist with a schlorship, and my wife and I will support the arena project, and men's and womens basketball, and volleyball, tick and field, cross country, softball, soccer and if they start hockey or tiddlywinks, I'll support that as well.
I will go to games, as painful as they seem at times and buy season tickets. But one thing I won't do is watch a game at home or on the Internet, not drive to Vermillion, or not join the Howling Pack AND THEN CRITICISE the team or staff and pretend to know more than they do. We fired a successful coach 4 years ago and it set us back. Do it wrong this time or hire a D2 coach with a 1-2 year success record in a pissant conference, and you won't see a contender for several years. Bank on it. If you think budget or updated facilities don't matter, you're high on drugs. It takes $$$$$& and support to build a winner.
Anyone that knows me knows I detest losing. And we have issues that need to be addressed, but you can't continuously hire and fire people like we are suggesting. I was critical of Meierkorts firing 4 years ago, and I still am. But I was also unaware of some of the off field issues. And I was more than critical off how Sayler handled it, and I supported Sayler across the board. But if you aren't aware of this please be aware of it now. Cultures are hard to change. Really hard. Whatever situation we are in right now is whatever it is, but I'm not going to follow the lead of anyone that has no investment of time or money into this program, and start all over why they sit at home not buying tickets. I'll quit being a fan before that happens.

When you say we fired a successful coach 4 years ago are you implying that we should not have never fired Meierkort. He was successful at one point but he was completely losing that program. They couldn't win on the road to save their life. His team had talent but no discipline whatsoever and they were under coached. Meierkort was successful no question but many peoples arguments were that he did so in a depleted NCC and as his tenure grew and he faces stronger schedules his teams would fold under adversity. Meierkort did an amazing job for 3 years but he lost the program plain and simply and his best case senario in the Great West Conference may have been break even. In the MVFC at very best case senario he would have been 4-4 and I doubt the Yotes would have been that good under him. The Yotes will get this thing right eventually. There will be alot of good coaches chomping at the bit to get a job in the MVFC.
