Their offense still looks pretty good to me. 31 against YSU, who hasn't been as strong as they looked in the dome, and 29 against NDSU isn't too shabby. Granted, they lost their leading rusher who was also their best all-purpose guy to suspension, but with a 5th year senior QB and talented WRs they are still very dangerous IMO.

Everything I'm seeing about the USD football team is saying that if we win two of the last three games that we would have a shot at the playoffs. Is there any precedent for a 6-5 team (albeit 4-4 in the MVFC with a loss to KSU) making the playoffs? I really thought 7-4 was generally the minimum record to be considered for an at-large bid.

I believe there is precedent, but I'd have to think us having any shot in a six-win scenario would require wins over SDSU and Illinois State. Davis, MSU and Drake do nothing for our resume. I say we just win out and remove all doubt.

I don't think a 6-5 USD team gets in the playoffs. Not only because of the non conference resume but also because USD just isn't a big name yet in the FCS playoff discussion and I think that would hurt them eventhough it really shouldn't. It's going to take winning out for the Coyotes to make it and I think fairly it should. Although on the other hand if they would have defeated NDSU, SDSU and Illinois State that would be pretty damn impressive. I don't think by the end of the year the Coyotes will be able to put that kind of a stretch together anyway so it's probably all going to be irrelevant.

The fired up Coyotes run out onto the field for the game against Southern Illinois who is making their first appearance in the Dakota Dome. I love the original red uni's with the white pants and red helmets. I will admit that I like the red jerseys and red pants as well. They said that they took the black face masks off the new crome helmets and put them on the traditional reds. I like the look.

The Salukis go 80 yards in 15 plays to get on the board first. 7-0 Southern Illinois. That took over 6:00 so the Coyotes need to figure out a way to get off the field quicker next time.

Coyote tie it up at 7-7 after going for a 4th and 2 deep in SIU territory. Looks like a good game underway today at the dome. Both offenses moving pretty well so far.

Yotes get the interception and are threatening now in SIU territory trying to take the lead.

It appeared on the replay of the potential touchdown that the Coyotes receiver had a foot in bounds but it was called imcomplete in the end zone. If there would have been TV at this game that probably would have been over turned and called a touchdown. As it is Bergner makes the field goal and it is 10-7 Coyotes.

The Salukis get a 62 yard run into Coyote territory, get a third down pass interference call to help them and then finish off the drive with a touchdown pass. 14-10 Southern Illinois takes the lead. They have an explosive offense. Yotes now get their shot to respond. USD needs a good drive here.

Yotes go for it on 4th and goal from the 2 and miss. Long drive with no points there. Now SIU starts with over 5:00 to go in the half.

Coyotes get a game breaking 80 yard touchdown pass. Just the kind of play the Yotes need for this offense. There is a little time left for SIU yet this half but the Yotes get the ball to start the 3rd quarter.

Man, a very bad break for the Coyotes. They muff a punt and SIU recovers. There is a missed offensive pass interference called and without the loss of yardage the Salukis cash in for the touchdown. 21-17 SIU with a minute to go in the half.

Southern Illinois leads 21-20 at half. Definately the best competitive game in the dome this year. The Coyotes have played well on offense and I am impressed with the play calling in this one. Frederick looks good and the receivers are making plays today. Southern Illinois is a pretty bad defense so that is probably helping the cause as well.
I haven't been listening to Van Goor much until today but I have to wonder what game he is watching and what he is thinking when calling these games. He has to often correct himself on making the wrong call. There was a very obvious imcomplete pass when the Coyotes had the ball that he called good and got all excited during the play. He needs to not call the play until it actually happens. I don't know if it is his vantage that he is calling the game from and I don't know whether he looks at a monitor when calling the game but he just doesn't seem to be seeing what it happening on the field and announcing the plays appropriately.
