SDSU travels to the Dakota Dome this week coming off what may be their biggest win to date at the D1 level against previously #2 Illinois State. Looking over some stats it seems the strength of this SDSU team lies in the passing game and on both sides of the ball, even though it seems they don't know who their starting QB is. If they were to shut down our run game and force us to be one-dimensional things are likely to get ugly on offense - and it appears that just that may have been Illinois State's undoing yesterday as Coprich only found 55 yards on 22 carries.
The weakness of SDSU however appears to be their rushing game (-4 yards against NDSU anyone?). We have been pretty good against the run this season outside of a few big plays, definitely can't be giving up any more of those. I expect to shut down the run game and hope that our secondary is up to the task of stopping another high flying passing offense. We did a pretty good job of keeping Iannotti in check and SIU is currently leading the MVFC in passing offense so I believe our defense is up to this task.
My take is that if we can run the ball consistently and free up the passing game for Saeger we can win this game. Gotta sustain drives and give the defense a breather every now and again. Great special teams play, limiting penalties, forcing some turnovers, and a deafening crowd would certainly help as well.
I want to be glued to my TV and shouting "Win and in!" when we play Illinois State two weeks from now. Let's keep the playoff dream alive and upset some aggies in the process.

state's defense is probably easily one of the top defense in the Valley, which means it is one of the top in the nation as well. USD's D is not too shabby either. Whichever Defense can set the tone, maybe get a few turnovers, will win this game. state's offense seems to be boom or bust so far this year, also not unlike the Yotes. I actually see a defensive battle, similar to the last state game in the dome until the last minute when they broke it open on a pick 6 as we where going in to tie the game. I think right now the Yotes have the edge on special teams. Bergner has really hit his stride in both punting and place-kicking. From what I have seen and read, state's FG kicker has struggled a little this year. could come down to ST.
Coyotes will have a hard time just lining up and running at the state D, so hopefully we can get Saeger involved in the run game, get him some confidence and get him rolling. Again vs. SIU we saw when he performs this offense is very capable of carrying the load when it needs to. I think the same applies for state's offense. If they can establish the QB run game with their freshman and get him some confidence early then I think they will have some success.
I'm going to blow your mind here with this one....whichever teams QB plays better, will win the game. I know...thats some really deep, in depth analysis right there (sarcasm). If we can get the NDSU/SIU version of Saeger, I really like our chances. If we get the YSU/UNI Saeger, then it will be a lot harder to win this game.

Once again we saw that when Saeger makes his read then takes off and runs..., it opens everything else up. See first half vs second half. I don't think that was all his fault though. If you analyze the SIU defense in the second half. They stayed in the rush lanes much better not giving Ryan a chance to run. (See the last series when we scored for examples) I was also reflecting on defense thinking we gave up 31 points but everyone including Joe thinks they played great. I can't remember every SIU drive but when they scored on that long pass in the 3rd quarter Lilly had what looked like good position. They just made one hell of a play. I don't think we can give up 31 this week and still win though

I would like to see us give up a max of 21 points this weekend.

I would like to see us give up a max of 21 points this weekend. It will be interesting to see if SDSU only scores 21 points or less this weekend. They only scored 7 points against NDSU and UNI but they have scored at least scored 24 points against everybody else. SDSU has went with a QB rotation of the first 2 series for Lujan, Christian comes in for the 3rd series and after that the coaches do what they feel is best. Against Missouri St, Lujan came back in and played the rest of the game but for the other games they have normally stuck with Christian. Except for a play last week when Christian's helmet came off and Lujan came in for 1 play and threw a TD pass. Some fans want Christian to start and play the whole game. I don't know if the coaches will do the 2 series and then 1 series thing the rest of the season or not. SDSU's defense has been playing really good this season. They have allowed 38 points to Kansas, 28 points to NDSU and 20 points to Illinois State. They haven't allowed more then 10 points to any other team this season. With a defense that has allowed 10 points or less to 6 of their 9 opponents and an offense that has scored at leas 24 points in 7 of their 9 games, you would think it looks good for SDSU but I'm still worried. NDSU was the team that bucked both trends. They scored 24 points and only allowed SDSU to score 7 points. To make things more interesting, USD beat NDSU. USD started the playoffs before last week because they need to win out to make the playoffs. I think SDSU did the same thing about 3 years ago. They had to win their last 3 games to make the playoffs. They did that and then they won their first round game in they playoffs so they won 4 win or you are out/done games. They is the same boast USD is in. USD does have The #11 and #2 teams to beat to get in but it came happen. I was impressed with USD's win over NDSU.

Thank you for your take and insight on SDSU. I've only seen box scores and their games against Kansas and part of NDSU. I will be surprised if we are another opponent held to 10 points or less, but it could certainly happen if the running game never gets started.

Would love to go to this great rivalry game. Tickets seem to not be readily available... Not having many ties to the school makes the price a little high for me. Asked my brother and cousin in law (USD alums) why they don't go and they both basically replied "Because they are guaranteed butt whoopings". Told them both this yr would be different as USD is finally playing up to the optimism. Hope they pull it out this weekend!

WR Jake Wieneke is the real deal for SDSU. Our secondary and scheming will need to be on point to keep that guy in check.

I wouldn't mind having a safety key on him the whole game. Take him out of the picture. One of our young corners, maybe #7?, got picked on pretty good at times against SIU. We need to give those guys all the help we can. No big plays over the top.

The two things we need to key on are Wieneke deep and Christion running. We need to have safety help on Wieneke at almost all times, especially passing downs. Make someone else beat us. When Christion is in, have a spy on him at almost all times and mix in zone blitzes to confuse him (Van Ginkel is athletic enough to drop back a few times). Keying on those two will open up other spots for them, but I think that is the risk we need to take to win this game.

Something we do not seem to do very often so that worries me.
Stop Weineke and their offense suffers with the struggles their running game has had this year. Even during the NDSU game when they had Weineke shut down Lujan still was throwing garbage balls his way in double coverage. They will look his way all game no matter what. I wasn't sure the wabbits had any other receivers that game.
