Established head coach vs first year coach handed a mess in his first year in the MVFC. You really like to ignore the full implications of situations and just implore the AD to fire everyone. The alternative to Joe Glenn or even Meierkort probably would have had a worse record.
Also, basketball and football are entirely different sports. Football has 22 starters and basketball has 5, football has a dozen coaches on staff and basketball is just four. It takes much less to pay a great staff and much less time to find the necessary players. It really isn't complicated.

It takes much less to pay a great staff and much less time to find the necessary players. It really isn't complicated. Do you really think another coach would have been worse than 6-26. That is not much confidence in the USD administration's ability to hire a new coach if it ever came down to it. Lets assume Meierkort's mess (which I don't believe was the case) was the reason for Glenn struggling out of the gate and posting a 3-13 record in his first two years. I would think anyone with common sense would believe that by the beginning of year 3 that Glenn would be fully responsible for the teams success's or failures going forward. Glenn's 3rd and 4th year produced the same record of 3-13. Is that on Meierkort? Is that on Vermillion being a lousy town? Is that on the facilities? What exactly is the reason for the record over the last 2 years. That is on Joe Glenn folks and any other excuse pales in comparison. SDSU has (or recently had) the same bad facilities, the same small South Dakota town, the same recruiting area and they have done just fine. The reason for USD's failures mostly fall on Glenn's lap. It all started right off the bat with him allowing Wes to stay on as OC. It continued with his reluctance to remove him from those duties despite repeated failures at the job. He has old ideas and is not willing to change with the times. His schemes are outdated and the offensive play calling is poor and that ultimately falls on him because if it is the OC that is calling the plays and he is not changing that up than he is ultimately to blame. I believe he has a reluctance to put the players on the field that give his team the best chance to win. He is stubborn with his quarterbacks or if not he is very poor at recruiting quarterbacks. After 4 years he still doesn't appear to have a quarterback on the roster that can challenge the status quo despite the status quo not being able to get it done on many occasions. The Jacks have a freshman quarterback doing just fine. He is not very good at adjusting on the fly and as we saw against SDSU when the offense gets put under the gun late in a game they don't have an adequate 2 minute offense to move the ball down the field quickly. He allowed the special teams to wallow under his watch for much of his 4 years. Even the defense under Petrino has been average at best and really bad at worst. Glenn is not just a coach like in the NFL but the CEO of the entire operation. The buck starts and stops right at his doorstep. It's his schemes, his players, his coaching and his ultimate responsibility and no one else should take more of the credit or blame than he should take. Next in line is Herbster because he is the one that makes the decision whether Glenn should be the man or not.

Understandably there are strong opinions on the topic of Glenn and the entire FB staff. Herbster will not fire Glenn IMO. Perhaps Glenn will retire. He hasn't earned the right to decide his timetable via wins and losses (based on that he would be let go) - think of it as a lifetime achievement award for the greatest Coyote that I have ever met.
When Glenn steps away, it is my belief that USD needs to do a national search and build a new staff.
Yesterday the FB team laid an egg. The team showed great energy and promise the preceding four games which makes it that much more disappointing. Who are the real Coyotes? The team that beat NDSU, Missouri St, SIU, and lost valiantly to a good SDSU team? Or the team that laid an egg against YSU, WIU, UNI, Illinois State? Would be hard to answer if the only year we were looking at was this year. The previous three seasons answers it for me. Remember two seasons ago how many of us felt progress was showing on the field with a signature win on the road at UNI and a tough fought loss to SDSU at home. That was followed up by the realization that a Tyler Starr-less team sure took a huge step backwards and every conference game was a loss. (Capped off by a route in Brookings.)
If the coaches at WIU and Indiana St can turn around their programs, it is fair to expect USD to do that. If SDSU can have success in the MVFC, USD needs to expect and demand the program also steps up. Whatever does end up happening, this is a huge decision for Herbster and his legacy as USDs AD will hinge on the right decision.

I think budget will play a big role. if USD can pay up I would look at current Utah St OC Josh Heupel. He is an Aberdeen native and played a year in an FCS program before going Juco and then to his success at Oklahoma. If money becomes an issue, I would bet on The USF coach coming in. USD can afford him and he is familiar with recruiting the same footprint.

Mark Mangino has some baggage but may be looking for his next HC job. He spent the 2013 season on the Youngstown staff before taking over as OC at Iowa St. He was fired a few weeks ago. He was a tremendous coach at Kansas and brought in recruits and produced results that program never had previously.

No. Not interested in Mangino. Out of curiosity, why not?

No. Not interested in Mangino. My first reaction is also "no" on him but I think he does deserve a look if he would even be interested.

Tony Samuel - defensive coach at Georgia State. Prior HC experience at New Mexico St and SE Missouri St. He was an OLB coach at Nebraska for 11 years, so he knows the geography - winning recruiting battles in Nebraska and Iowa are key IMO. He could put together a staff and perhaps bring Jeff Jamrog back -(he was on Tony's staff at New Mexico St and was an assistant at USD and UNO in the past. Was also HC at Minnesota St for a few years) Jeff is one of the best recruiters you will meet.

Cousin Eddie, you ask about Paul Rhoads and right away someone chimes in he wasn't worth a crap at Iowa State. This is what's going to happen when you speculate, but I will tell you in all candor if you could hire him, it would set The Valley on its ears. Not fully knowing what his contract says with Iowa State, it's not beyond comprehension he would come. Here's why. His buyout at ISU I understand to be $4.5 million. Most times in these cases, if they take another job, they simply subtract what the new schools pay is from what the buyout is. Therefore, this is one case where we could get a big time coach for a period of time and not worry about coming up with huge dollars OR one year contracts.
Paul's background is he was a D coordinator at Pitt and Auburn amongst other coaching stops along the way. He is a great guy, fantastic motivator, and quite honestly is a USD type of guy. He's from Ankenny, so he knows the midwest. His past experiences gives him a knowledge of recruiting regions unlike Stugart or Deboer or names like that. I'm not picking on those guys, or discounting them, but now we can't afford to make a mistake. And why no hire is a guaranty, you need to minimize the chances. I'm not for a D2 coach or Arena coach, I want experience at this level or higher. Quite frankly, I want someone with national recruiting knowledge, not just regional.

Along with strong recruiting skills. Very solid name

Dale Lennon is on the hot seat and may not make it through the week. He has struggled at SIU but he is high character and I believe a heck of a coach. Would certainly make for an interesting hire.

I do. He is not a great guy behind the sceans and is nothing like Glenn when it comes to being a good guy
