WIU's coach would be a fantastic hire in my opinion. I can see a few reasons why he would be willing to make the jump, namely that he has WIU at its peak and the USD job is a quite attractive position to launch one's career to the lower-level FBS head coaching ranks.

This thread on the Western Illinois message board indicates some of the money and support issues faced by the Leathernecks. Granted, it is just message board talk, but some options discussed are moving all sports to D2 or moving the football program to the nonscholarship Pioneer League. Seems kind of foolish to abandon the MVFC and Summit League as the Necks onfield success seems to be moving in the right direction. Just in the last month, the football team had advanced to the second round of the playoffs. Their mens basketball team recently upset the Wisconsin Badgers. Nielson would be a great hire in my opinion. He was voted by his conference piers as the 2015 Coach of the Year

No. The conference members would be content to go back to nine teams and play an 8 game conference schedule that is a true round robin. Only YSU, especially, or another member (MSU) leaving opens the door for UND to get into the conference.
Speaking of MSU. Do you think the Sun Belt is still going to come calling after this dumpster fire of a season for them?
I think Nielson would be a great hire and I would understand the reasons for his leaving WIU, if that happens.

He had great success in his last 2 stops at UMD and WIU. Has turned WIU into a conference contender and playoff team with lesser facilities and financial support. This would hit the nail on the head as far as Herby's "wish list" is concerned. I hope that this has some real substance to it and isn't just speculation.

Any speculation on SIU looking at Nielsen? Carbondale is not far from Macomb and this guy has already proven himself a winner in the MVFC.

Nielsen is very respected amongst his peers. I ran into a coach for NDSU on thier bye week and was talking valley football with him. He said that the coach who he thought was doing really good things and turning heads in Fargo, was Nielsen

Why would Nielsen leave Western Illinois to come to USD especially after he is just getting something good started in Macolm. It's nice as USD fans to think this could happen but I just don't think it makes sense to make a lateral move at this point for him. He should stay there for at least a couple of more years prove himself and go for a better job overall.

"Sources tell FootballScoop.com that Barry Odom is considering bringing Josh Heupel on board as offensive coordinator. Heupel, who is currently the offensive coordinator at Utah State, is the former offensive coordinator at Oklahoma."
This would take a long-shot name mentioned by some out of contention for the Coyotes.

Missouri is already a spread team, so there wouldn't be a lot of adjustment with the players.

More resources, better facilities, not having the threat of non-scholly FCS or D2 hanging over your head. While WIU has had a great season and he is definitely building something there the ceiling is higher at USD because of the resources and what we can offer.

Spoke with a few of the current coaches and they say that word is interviews will begin next week...should hopefully have some more news regarding the next leader of the program soon. I know the current staff is out on the road recruiting and keeping tabs on current commits and still selling the U to prospective commits also. The sooner we can get someone hired and a staff in place, the easier it will be to sell the program and get recruits onto campus and show them the direction and vision for the program. Should be an exciting week. I called an old coaching buddy that has distant ties to Neilson at WIU to see what he thought about the rumor, and while he couldn't confirm that he might be interested in finding another place to coach in the Valley, they understood why he might leave and didn't think the notion was crazy that USD might have a very good chance at nabbing him.
Things are about to heat up and Christmas may come early for Coyote football in the next 7-10 days.
Go Yotes!

He appears to be a solid candidate. He did a good job at Minnesota-Duluth for sure and his history prior to that seems to be good as well. He is starting to get up their in age a bit at 56. I would prefer a guy still in his 40's but the Yotes could definately do worse than Nielson. Western seems to be really focused on the run but I don't know that for sure. As long as he will run a well balanced offense with some imagination I wouldn't mind him as coach. I just don't want to see an offense so predicated on the run that when it comes to late game situations such as against SDSU that the passing game ends up being a detriment that can't get it downfield when push comes to shove. I am not saying that I necessarily am looking for a pass happy team that doesn't run it well but I just want a team that is good in that facet of the game.

I am all for taking as much time in this process as it takes but why does it take two weeks from Joe's announcement to start interviews. I would have thought that process would have started 4 days ago Monday and not this upcoming week. Does it take two weeks to sift through resumes to find out who to bring in for a conversation. I am probably being a little nit picky but I would have hoped the process would be further along than that at this point. I would think that going through potential candidates could be done at the same time that interviews would be happening. If they have to wait for the consulting firm to do some of their work or have a rep sit in on the interviews than I can understand that time frame a little better.
