DeBoer made some good career moves to get where he is today. Who knows, maybe if he would have been the USD HC he would have bombed and he would be trying to revive his career at this point. Just because you are a fantastic coach it does not mean you will be successful. Arguably the greatest football coach of all time, Bill Belichick, had a losing record in Cleveland and was fired. There are a lot of ingredients involved in being successful. Just being good, or great, is not enough. Preparation needs to meet opportunity.
I also disagree that Bob is coasting or will be just a mediocre coach going forward. The facility improvements have made an impact on recruiting. If you follow the recruiting you should know that we are pulling in better players. The program is starting to fill out and mature and is getting better every year. If he's coasting then you'd see the recruiting drop off because recruiting is a grind and that is what starts to break down first when coaching goes into cruise control mode. I also really believe that finally getting the SDSU monkey off our back will allow the football program to break out. I expect good things in 2020 and beyond.
You can't even compare football to basketball. There are way more moving parts to a football program and it can take years to get it built up and rolling. Basketball can be quickly turned around with the transfer portal and the simple fact that one or two players can completely change the complexion of the team.

I don't think the facility improvements are going to have as big of an impact as many think they will. For basketball I could see it having a bigger impact because the program went from having one of the worst facilities to one of the best. Football still plays in the same dome they always have albeit an improved dome. Having a winning program and a welcoming environment is likely more important than the facilities.
If you think about it I don't see the basketball facility having any positive effect on recruiting when it comes to the men. I think recruiting has actually regressed since Lee took over but time will tell. It is more the recruiter and the program success as it is the facilities. Am I saying facilities don't matter, no I am not. I am just saying that other factors are likely more important.
For football the facility improvements will help but the program success and recruiter are once again more important. I have actually never had a problem with the dome. I have always thought it was a nice facility for football.

Our locker room is one of the worst in the Valley, same with our offices. We don't even really have a team meeting room at this point in time. The fact that we have remained relevant in recruiting with the facilities in place is pretty impressive. If you go to the XDSUs, ISUr, YSU, they all have newer, nicer facilities than we do. Yet we still seem to recruit on par if not over some of them. These facilities should provide a significant boost in my opinion.

...I don't see the basketball facility having any positive effect on recruiting when it comes to the men... ... I have actually never had a problem with the dome. I have always thought it was a nice facility for football. You serious, Clark? Wow. Why would any University spend so much on competitive facilities if they are so unimportant in recruiting? And it's not just recruiting the best athletes, either. You don't think the SCSC was a factor in getting Coach P to Vermillion? How about the track facility for retaining the amazing coach Derek Miles? I'll concede that the jury is still out on Coach Lee's abilities to coach and recruit. But our facilities are certainly not holding him back, like the $h!tty dome football facilities have held our coaches back. You are always talking about not settling for mediocre results. You don't see the hypocrisy in giving those coaches sub-standard facilities, if you have such a high standard for their results?

As I said facilities are important. I just think other things are more important. That is all. If facilities were the most important thing that men's basketball program would finish first every year. The Women are just good regardless. The tradition, coach P and recruiting are all important for them. The facility is very nice and is certainly a help.
My point is that the Coyote football team is not going to suddenly be considered a world beater unless a lot more changes than just the dome. I think the new SCSC is more important to the success of the basketball and volleyball programs than the renovated dome is for football. Basketball and Volleyball didn't even have a legit home made for their sports. Football did, it was just outdated.

Right or wrong, we live in a world where people gravitate towards the shiny object. The shiny object in sports is facilities. If anyone truly believes we can recruit against the XDSU’s in our league without the updates in my opinion you are severely mistaken. The football locker room is/was disgusting. The coaches offices were flat out embarrassing. The one “shiny object” that we have since the new arena is the weight room. That particular investment has been a huge draw to the young men we are recruiting. Coaches used it effectively to offset the negatives of what I just pointed out
However, from the time the renovation is completed, there will no longer be any excuses or reasons why we can’t draw the kind of players we need to compete year in and year out. Coaches need to be held accountable and will be held accountable. There are other factors as well, such as assistant coaches salaries, but for the most part the fans and alumni stepped up and made the commitment that was needed to make us relevant.
Coyote Fan is correct in saying that the coaching staffs need to recruit well, and do so on an annual basis. Where I believe he’s wrong is when he states facilities aren’t all that important. It’s quite the opposite. That’s why we have poured over $90M in state of the art facilities. Make no mistake the DakotaDome 2.0 version is a game changer....for players, coaches, and fans.
