What is he talking about? Who is reacting luke warm to this hire that is a coyote fan? The biggest critics I have seen are Jeff's colleagues at ESPN 99.1 - not coyote fans. The only negativity I have seen over this whole thing has come from Macomb. Even CF has warmed up to the guy. I don't think there is a Coyote fan out there that isn't at least mildly pleased with this hire.

It looks like WIU's athletic department is in shambles right now. Just falling apart and really painting a picture of what Nielson was dealing with previously. It's pretty clear now why he was so quick to laud our vision today when the place he is coming from has had an interim AD for over a year and a president who thought he could handle the new hiring by himself - which turned from them announcing a new coach today to starting to form a search committee next week. Nielson is hoping to have his staff in place by the end of this week and I have to think his entire previous staff is ready to jump at the offer if Nielson calls them rather than stick around to see what happens in Macomb. I'm thinking he brings nearly all his guys over here from WIU.

In no way is the Harkness article ispot on, just another attempt to promote the bunnies up north who the Sioux Falls media is in love with. If any single Yote fan is disappointed in the hiring of Nielson should travel to Yankton and have their head examined. Further more for Harkness to compare our program with Nebraska is ludicrous. Over the past 12 years we have averaged 5.5 wins, while Nebraska has won close to 90 wins in that same time frame. Husker fans keep living in the Osborne era, while the Coyotes are just hoping to beat the bunnies every now and then. Nielson has proven himself every where he has been. Who cares how we got him, the fact of the matter is he is a Winner!!! He gives us the best chance to win some games, recruit some quality players, and put the U on the football map. It's going to get even better to be a Coyote, our track and cross country teams, basketbal teams are going to be better with the new facilities being completed very soon along with women's volleyball, softball, and soccer reaching new heights.

I've done an edit to my original post. I should have stated the "portions" part right away...my mistake. Harkness was on Overtime the other day and the "splashy hire" verbiage can be attributed to the ESPN 99.1 Facebook page and a comment made by 1 USD alum regarding the hire.

Agreed, I should have also stated portions of the article were spot on. I gave too much credit to Harkness.

I finally had time to view yesterday's press conference in its entirety and WOW, did I come away feeling great about Coach Nielson, and the future of the Yote football program! The Q & A session with Nielson was terrific. Very measured, well constructed answers and no BS. You get a very good understanding of what the man is about, and how and why he has been successful. Love his answer about what he envisions in 5 years!
Also, Herbster and Abbott made very clear the University's commitment to build a successful program. The word is they already have architects designing the planned upgrades to the dome. Hopefully we hear more in the near future.
All of this reaffirms my commitment to help with the financial resources to make it all happen.

From Jeremy Hoeck: m.yankton.net/sports/article_a25dd306-a3b4-11e5-ac71-8f0fcdd599ec.html?mode=jqmHighlights from the article: USD's Bob Nielson at 255k is now the fifth highest paid coach in the MVFC; trailing NDSU (326k), Illinois State (300k), UNI (296k), and Missouri State (270k) Herbster states the AD's dedication to higher salary not just for the head coach, but the assistant positions as well. Good news that we will be paying assistants competitively as well. Another reference to upgrading facilities once they are able to get everyone out of the west side of the Dome (weight room, volleyball court, basketball courts). Herbster has spoken about this so aggressively with the introduction of Nielson. I honestly thought that Dome renovations were quite a ways off, but if Nielson - a guy under a one-year contract until further notice - agreed to terms with us because of the promise of renovations we may start to see real progress very soon.

What are the likely upgrades to the facilities going to be in your guys opinions? Equipment? Meeting rooms? Strength and conditioning space? I haven't been in the innards of the dome in a while but remember the locker room was recently upgraded. The weights are still upstairs I believe. Are they thinking like recruiting spaces with the updated look or what?

I believe it was announced that a new HD videoboard would replace the current scoreboard on the north side as well (might be separate and come sooner than the big renovations though)

With most of the sports moving into the new arena for office space, this would allow for the current office space to be upgraded into football only office space pretty easily. We really need meeting rooms (i.e., a lecture hall-like team meeting room, position specific meeting rooms) to keep up with the jones'. Locker room is in dire need of upgrades. The lockers that are being used are the same ones that were there when I played almost 20 years ago, falling apart, very dated and have more than served there purpose but need to be replaced. From what has been discussed in the past...a new locker room was thought to be most likely built in the west gym area underneath the current weight room and volleyball court.

Last info I heard (could be nothing more than grumblings around town) is that the new locker room would be where the gym underneath the weight room is now and the area above will be all office space.

They also need to bump out the concourse on the east side where fans enter and exit the dome. New restrooms, concession area, and maybe a "fan shop". While the players may not necessarily care about those amenities, parents, prospects, fans, and donors sure do.

Any word on where the assistant hiring process is at? Defense was let go without interviews. Some offensive coaches had interviews Friday/Saturday with decisions by Monday
