We got our first glimpse of the Bob Nielsen era in a game situation and here are my thoughts:
Austin Simmons looked good. I'm not sure that we have a quarterback controversy on our hands but we have something to look forward to in this freshman.
Tacari Carpenter was pretty good at shedding our defenders. Carpenter and Jackson did well with their opportunities to play with the 1st team with Van Roekel and Donovan being out.
There were at least a couple of bad snaps that we can't have during actual games.
Miles is again going to be a very dependable kicker for us. He was booming field goals straight through the uprights that might have been good from 55 yards.
We have a long way to go on defense.

At half. Fun offense to watch. Very up tempo. Simmons has a cannon. This style of offense is built for Mike Fredrick. I figured with Nielsen he will figure out a way to get Fredrick the ball and especially in space. He was my favorite offensive performer from last year and I really like his potential. With multi receiver sets I can see him being very successful.

IMO the only way there isn't a quarterback controvery is if Simmons is the starter. Saeger is an average quarterback and nothing more. The Coyotes will be much better off in 2017 if Simmons is the starter for at least a good portion of this season. Since a brand new offense is being implemented go with the freshman and kick start the Simmons era right away. My theory when it comes to quarterbacks is to let them start young, meaning taking the reigns early in their career and when their career is over go back to a freshman or sophomore again. I don't like having to change quarterbacks every year or two. Of course going with the best player period is always a good idea but if it's close the program is better off long term with the younger player getting the start.

The only way to avoid a controversy is to make the controversial move of benching the senior quarterback (who has two years of starting experience) in favor of a freshman? Literally the only game tape we have of him is from today's scrimmage and you yourself stated that you only saw the last few plays of that. How can you even make a comment like this?

My comments are because Saeger is a mediocre quarterback that led a mediocre (at best) offense. If Simmons is even an average quarterback that is the way to go. The quarterback will be more important in the new offense than what it was in Glenn's system. The further we distance ourselves from the losing culture of the past few years the better. I would like to hope that Nielsen will have this team in the playoffs this year but that is probably not going to happen. In 2017 we would already be a step ahead of the curve to have our most important position filled with a player that already has his development and seasoning. I admittedly have not seen Simmons play but based on what I have read he seems to kind of have the "it" factor. I would rather go with the high upside choice rather than the proven mediocre commodity.

Can't help myself, but he brings this on himself. And I know that if I don't like what's on the radio, I should turn the channel. Let's all be thankful that CF is not apart of our administration or on any Coyote coaching staff, that's all. Go Yotes!!

Here are my thoughts on today's spring game:
1.) Simmons has a good arm and hopefully is going to be a great player. My observance, and I could be totally wrong, is that he is very short compared to Ryan, so he will be forced to be a rollout quarterback. That possibly makes it easier to defend vs a ab that can throw from the pocket or rollout.
2.) Maybe I'm alone in my thinking, but I still feel Ryan is a better runner than Austin. Just my observation. But he does have a cannon for an arm.
3.) While I still think our talent level isn't what it needs to be, I will say these kids want to win, and will do all they can to make up for lessor talent. They have heart and a boatload of character, and that's a tribute to a Coach Glenn.
4.) This staff WANTS to be here. That's refreshing, and they believe in Coach Nielsen 110%. That's a huge plus. I'm very impressed with the coaches...all of them.
5.) I'm hopeful for 5-6 wins. I don't think we are a playoff team yet, but this staff will coach them up. We will be dangerous ( like NDSU found out last year )
6.) The kids are buying what this staff is selling. That's huge.
On a side note, I got a tour today of the new arena, and I'm telling you our weight training room is simply unbelievable. I met the rep from the company installing all the weights, flooring, and machines, and he told me there are very few places in the country that will have as fine of system laid out by our staff as what USD is going to have. It's off the charts good. Congrats to Jevon and Matt for doing it right.
It's been ages since I've had that feeling something very special is taking place right now in Vermillion. There is a spark and a bounce in everyone's step that hasn't been present in ages. I like what I see, and proud to be part of it.

YF,
That is nice that you got a tour of the new arena. What was your overall impression of it. Everything I have seen from photo's is that it is gonna be a nice cozy intimate feeling facility. Did you have a chance to sit in some of the seats from various different vantage points. What is your opinion of the view/sight lines to the court from where you were at.

Did you have a chance to sit in some of the seats from various different vantage points. What is your opinion of the view/sight lines to the court from where you were at. I will say this without reservation. If anybody complains about anything they would also complain the pot wasn't big enough if they won the lottery. There isn't a bad seat in the arena. I purposely went to the four areas that are historically not great places to have seats in other arenas, and the view is uncanny good. I promise you all that this arena is without question going to blow your mind away. I go to games all across the country, as my wife and I are sports junkies, and we have been in every field house/arena in the Big 12 and old Big Ten, and I will say this....I wouldn't trade our new arena for any of them if you remove the size portion out of it. Obviously the others can seat 12,000-18,000, but the Sanford Coyote Sports Center is flat out as good, if not better, than every single one of them. You all will be proud to call it home. The amenities are awesome. The locker rooms and meeting rooms for the kids are awesome, the weight room as I said in a previous post is FRICKIN UNBELEIVABLE, the entertainment area for boosters and donors is unreal. I could go on and on, but I can't wait till the public sees it. It's fantastic. The practice courts are great. The seats are comfortable. The color schemes are gorgeous. I am so impressed. My wife and I made a pledge to the arena, and many times when you give to something like that, you did it because you feel somewhat obligated to give back. But I will tell you this, I am damn proud that I made the decision I did, and if I can see where I can do it, I will up my pledge to finish off the Dome because from the plans I've seen, and the general planning scheme, it will put USD on the map facility wise. I'm telling you it's that impressive. One last thought. There is a room in the south end zone that allows you to walk from the arena into this entertainment room with glass exposure out onto the football field that is mind blowing. The colors of the green field, the red seats, the lighting down on it....wow. It's awesome. I know it sounds like a a sales pitch, but if you're capable of making any sort of pledge when the Dome plans are announced and approved, no matter what size it is, please consider it. It's really that cool. Again, I'm so proud to be part of it. In closing, there isn't one sport we fund that shouldn't be able to recruit to our school on the basis of facilities. Football, basketball (men's and women's), volleyball, track and field now have as good facilities as there are in the country for schools our size. You all will be very pleased I think.

YF, I meant to grab you before the game ended. Wanted to ask your opinion of the defense, specifically DL.
I agree with your other game assessments. You make a good point on Saeger's running. I would have liked to see Simmons have a couple more carries, but that is how it goes. Saeger's size definitely gives him some advantages.

Probably be use you are going up against your own guys. I thought D line was improved over last year, maybe LB's not as good yet, and corners were better. Make sense? I did think tackling was better, but then again, it couldn't have gotten worse. I'm hopeful we are good enough to keep us in games.

Watched the stream. Was good to see Carpenter and Kilgore look like what was expected of them out of HS.... Saeger played really well and can run... not mediocre IMO. Has a better understanding of the system compare to Austin. (Very exciting prospect)

Any word on Calvin Strong? Is his mandatory gray shirt year up yet?

Any word on Calvin Strong? Is his mandatory gray shirt year up yet? I recall him being ineligible for an entire academic year, so as long as he has done well in his class this freshman year he would be eligible for fall practice. Unsure if he would be allowed to participate in summer workouts...
