Anyone know if Calvin Strong will be eligible this year? If he is eligible does he play or does he redshirt? At this point he is long removed from even a formal practice and it might take a while for him to get back into game shape. At least we know he is still on campus and on the roster after what was probably a tough season away from football for this kid.

He is not lifting or working out with the team this summer, and enjoys the Greek life.

He is a class of 2015 player who was academically ineligible to participate last year, losing a year of eligibility in the process. Now he has four years remaining to play three, assuming his grades are good enough for him to be eligible this fall.

Figured since he had no stats, assumed he was redshirted and then became ineligible. So I thought he would have 4 remaining to play and just lost redshirt year. -with that said if a player becomes ineligible 1st year regardless if redshirted, he loses an active roster year? -or does a team have to declare him as redshirt and that is why he lost an active roster year?

Good news is we have some depth at RB anyway. My thought is he would have a very hard time taking carries from either Mike Frederick or Bouma this year anyways. Now, based on our RB history and my posting this, we will be starting Paul Anderson at RB week 7 due to injuries....

You can't technically redshirt an ineligible player. Redshirt players still practice and participate in official team activities, ineligible players can't even do that. I'm guessing that being ruled ineligible due to academics automatically comes with forfeiture of that year of eligibility. Not exactly an expert on those rules.

What if a student goes to college, after one year he decides he wants to play football and tries out and makes the team his (academic) sophomore year. Does he only have 3 years remaining? Could he be redshirted his sophomore year and still have 3 years of playing eligibility left?

Yote 53, I believe they would still have 4 years of eligibility remaining in that case.

After watching Calvin play in the Nebraska state championship his senior year, I couldn't wait to see him play in the Dome when I saw we signed him... I hope he gets his act together because I believe his talents displayed on the field during that game would be a tremendous asset to the Yotes. Also, for his sake, I hope he gets his life/future figured out before he looks back and regrets blowing his chance at an education and making something of himself.

Since on subject: "All Division I student-athletes must earn at least six credit hours each term to be eligible for the following term and must meet minimum grade-point average requirements that are related to an institution’s own GPA standards for graduation." www.ncaa.org/remaining-eligible-academics

Never good to be ineligible, but rough if it's a kid that was a planned redshirt... -sit frosh year, but then go ineligible after the 1st semester ---season counts as if never redshirted ---no spring ball -left with 3 years active and 1 redshirt

It wouldn't have surprised me a bit to see Strong as the #1 RB (if he had gotten eligible). All speculation at this point, but it seems like Bob doesn't have a problem replacing a veteran guy. I still think he intends to start Streveler in place of Saeger. It's not much of a stretch to say Calvin Strong is the most talented RB in the program. Or at least was, I'm not sure what a year away from the game has done to him. But I've watched the kid play, he absolutely has (or hopefully not "had") the talent to turn the MVFC upside down from the day he stepped on campus.

Too bad that evidently Strong's HS teammate and fellow Coyote, DeValon Whitcomb, can't get him on the right track. Coming out of HS they both were excited to be Yotes together.
