The USD radio broadcast just isn't a pleasant experience. Joe simply does not describe what is going on so the listener knows what is happening on the field. He misses a lot and Culver has to correct him a lot. Can we please get a radio broadcast that tells us what is going on. Then post game the opinion is that the Coyotes have played well at Youngstown. Doesn't a "W" have to show up somewhere before claiming how well the team has played against them. Just what kind of a standard is supposed to be set here. If the Coyotes play close or even within 20 for that matter but lose the next 4 or 5 more in a row at that place should we still be considered to play "good" at Youngstown. Youngstown was in firm control of the game most of the way. Their lead was never seriously challenged and were ahead 30-13 before a rather meaningless touchdown was put on the board late for the Yotes. The yardage disparity was fairly lop sided in the end. The eye test showed to me that Youngstown was much the better team and IMO the Yotes were lucky to only lose by 10.
So for any realistic semblance of a playoff chance next weeks game has to be a W. If not then it's moral victory talk the rest of the year. If the Yotes go down to UNI then the start of the Nielson era officially goes down as a disappointment and the uphill battle for the program to become good become more of an uphill climb. In typical USD fashion it looks like the program is still a year or two away. So next year will be year 31 of the 50 year plan so at least we are getting closer year by year. Just another 19 years of patience and we will be onto something. It's easier on the soul to be sarcastic then be downright angry but where is the out rage after this one. Do we even care any more or are we in "sweep under the rug" mode. I would think by now that there would be a few more opinions about this game.
It's time to put Simmons on the radar a bit. Steveler's stock has gone down every week it seems. People have film on him now with the Coyotes and they are doing just what I thought they should do and that is to take his running away and make him beat them with his arm. I don't think Steveler should be out right benched at this point but I do think Simmons deserves some playing time.

Road wins in-conference are always difficult, but based on results this week, it will be even more rare this year. Only 1 road team won - Missouri State. MISSOURI STATE! By far the closest game was the Yotes game, as we spent the 2nd half in striking distance, but couldn't make hay (yes, Pick 6).
(BTW - MSU. That isn't great news for the rest of the conference if MSU is able to win a road game against a ranked team. I know we don't play them, but teams expected a fairly straight forward W. If that flips to an 'L' for a few teams, it will be a jumbled mess for the distribution. I'm guessing the conference winner will have 2 L's this year.)

NDSU isn't losing 2 games this year. One maybe, but not two.

Losing should never be accepted I get that and yes it's tough because you've waited so long for change, however staff changes will indeed reset the timetable for consistent success. My outlook as an outsider is the expectations are/were too high...
-new scheme/philosophy, one might assume since being somewhat close the prior year success is a lock this season. The defense graduated numerous starters, both corners, line, and LBs... This year the D has numerous true freshman and/or redshirt freshman subbing in or starting.
This staff will recruit players that fit their scheme and philosophy. The new staff was hired in December? Very difficult to recruit kids that fit your system when most kids are verbally committed elsewhere or have an idea of where they are going, but this staff still managed to bring a good amount of talent.
In a nutshell USD has a new staff with new schemes and 1 recruiting class that they scrambled to put together. USD edge speed at D wasn't there so had to covert a WR to help out (normally doesn't work out) which has helped. The O brought in some speed at WR, however really young... Stay tuned you have an opportunity to see this team grow into a consistent winner opposed to a bleep on the radar...

Not usually a "look on the bright side" guy, but let's not forget what happened last year when we played YSU. If you can't see that Saturday's performance was a significant improvement from last year's matchup, you don't watch much football. I'm not gonna sit here and say we played/coached a good game, but don't act like the season's over. We played pretty poorly IMO and lost by 10 to a top 4 or 5 team in the conference on the road. Things could have been a LOT worse.

By my count, we had 9 freshmen, or redshirt freshmen, in the "2 deep" listing for the YSU game. I won't bother to look up the rest of the conference teams but seriously doubt any of the top teams would compare in that statistical category. Not an excuse, just a fact.

Problem is we have been hearing the "we have a lot of youth" story for years.
I'll give Bob a chance since he needs time to put his pieces in place and by all accounts the staff is doing a heck of a job on the recruiting trail so I think they will turn this thing around eventually.
Just gets depressing going through the same season ever year.

I won't bother to look up the rest of the conference teams but seriously doubt any of the top teams would compare in that statistical category. Not an excuse, just a fact. Great point, there were definitely some personnel changes this past week. This may have been for many reasons including injuries or changes to best match the opponent. I noticed that Graham played significant time at LB and the Gray brothers saw more time at both LB and Safety. On offence the freshman WRs saw more time and the Redshirt freshman Bianchi started at right tackle versus one of the better DE will will see all year. Definitely not time to throw in the towel, but I would expect to see more changes as the season goes along. Fact is that other than the true freshman, these are not athletes that were recruited by this staff or for their style of offence and defense. I am pretty sure the coaching staff has gone through a process of "re-recruiting" all the players on the roster to determine where they fit best for their O and D schemes, which is why we are seeing players switch positions last spring and even this fall. Do not be surprised if we don't see continued changes as they feel younger players who fit their schemes are ready to contribute. This also tells you why Strevler is at QB and will not be changing anytime soon. I understand any long time Yote fans continued frustrations. As a long suffering Die Hard Cubs fan, I fell your pain, but given time this might just be the change that leads to long term success (see the 2015 and 16 Cubs as the example) Judgement on this staff will need to come in 2 or 3 years. What I can say is they are recruiting to make that change. with over 100 offers out so far and a quick look at who they are offering, you can see some significant emphasis being put on O-line and D-line (around 40% of the offers are to these positions) and Defensive Backs (about 25%). Even with all of the changes, we continue to see improvement, now cut down on the turnovers and we might pull off a few upsets and get ourselves back into contention. I am looking forward to the UNI game and Dakota Days! Go Yotes!

We are a few turnovers away from being 3-1. What has hindered the team thus far is fixable, it's not like we've just been dominated in all phases of the game or anything like we saw a few times last year. We can still pull out a 4-4 Valley record and improve on the past.

NDSU isn't losing 2 games this year. One maybe, but not two. They are gonna lose November 19th Currently at a conference in Fargo. Most of the attendees are North Dakotans and their beloved football team is a common topic. Feels good each time they read my nametag and see I am out of Vermillion, usually draws a discussion about football in which I can have some bragging rights over the 5-time defending champions.
