He writes excellent feature pieces like this, but I know a lot of people weren't fans of his regular coverage for the Argus. The Argus Leader sports department (if you want to call it that now that there's maybe 2 people working there now) is nothing short of a joke. Any games finishing after 7:00 won't show up in the paper until 2 days later. Any college other than SDSU is considered 2nd rate. If you Yote fans think we get crappy coverage, how would you like to be ANY of the other colleges in the state. A college other than SDSU can be playing for a national championship, but a feature article about a SDSU athlete battling constipation will get front page billing. Matt Zimmer doesn't even try to conceal his bias. Here's hoping that the owners of the Fargo Forum starts up the new Sioux Falls Forum newspaper. The Fargo Forum is home owned and currently owns the Mitchell Daily Leader and the Worthington Daily Globe. They're a customer of mine and I've brought it up to my contacts there. Maybe then we can get CURRENT sports and some real local coverage. I'm really not sure how this connects to my opinion of Mick's past regular coverage, but I'll say that I don't care if the D2 or NAIA schools are playing for titles. Growing up in SD I didn't care about what our schools did until they went D1. You'll never be able to get me interested in hearing what USF, NSU, BHSU, DSU, Mount Mary, or Oglala Lakota College are up to.

When they let Mick go it was a slap in the face to USD. It became obvious that full time over exposure to SDSU athletics would be a given with their full time cheerleader of Zimmer. Brian H. was given the task of covering USD AND every other college in the state
Of course the fact that coverage of other colleges in the state is not of importance to you because your allegiance is totally with USD. I get that. Basically I'm the same way. I DO believe in fairness however, and because of how the Argus handles things now, our coverage is now split with what ever pathetic coverage they filter in for the other colleges in South Dakota.
I enjoy the articles by Mick and I think he's doing a great job. Kudos to USD for picking up on what he can contribute to our sports teams.

If you believe in fairness, you need to walk back your comments on Zimmer's bias and give Hank kudos for top notch HS coverage (which is hard) on top of the USD beat. OR, we could not have this conversation as we head into SLT.

Yeah, I agree about Zimmer. He calls a spade a spade. I don't envy his job having to deal with all the thin-skinned Jacks fans, while trying to maintain his journalistic objectivity. I know this may not be a popular opinion, but I have come around on Zim. He absolutely is not afraid to call out the poor attendance at State football games, or acknowledge the total dominance by this year's Coyote WBB team. I'd say he does know his place in terms of not trying to be a probing investigative reporter (no comment by him about the Joose cover-up). But in terms of giving his objective opinion, I think he tells what he thinks, not what everyone wants to hear. Tough job, with idiot fans breathing down his neck (on both sides).

Matt Zimmer has forgotten more about basketball than most of the people complaining about him will ever know. He does a good job and calls them like he sees them. Pisses me off that he's a dedicated state reporter, but he does a good job regardless.
The SDSU bias in the media is a lot bigger than Zimmer. It's all a result of numbers, really. There're just that many more state alums and fans in South Dakota. It sucks, but it's the truth. And the fact that since USD made the D1 transition, state has pretty much dominated the head to head match ups on the big stages (football and the SLT). Until we start winning in those areas on a regular basis, don't expect things to change. WBB the past several years has been a real bright spot for USD, but they still have only 1 SLT championship. Let's change that this week. A SLT championship for the girls then a win or two (or more) in the tournament would go a long way towards the media and the state putting the two schools on the same playing field.

Yeah, I wasn't going to comment on that, but Zimmer has freely admitted on more than one occasion that he isn't much of an x's and o's guy. Great journalist. Great Sports guy. Not a basketball expert.

He’s a great sportswriter that we’re lucky to have in South Dakota. I think a lot of people in SE South Dakota have been spoiled by just how good the Argus sportswriters have been over the last 30 years ... whether you like what they’re saying or hate it.

You hit the nail on the head here, and it's not just the Argus Leader who has cut back on quality sports reporting around the region. As a kid and young man, I couldn't wait for the KELO news broadcasts on Friday and Saturday nights with Jim Burt. Follow that up by some great sports reporting on Saturday and Sunday morning in the Argus, and before you knew it, the neighbor kids and I had to grab a ball and dream big. Unfortunately, those days are behind us.

Zim and Brian do a pretty good job in my book, especially with how thin they are spread.

Just putting this interview in the news thread, too (for posterity). This is Ciara Duffy being interviewed by a Rapid City radio show after: 1. winning Summit POY 2. winning ESPN national mid-major POY 3. winning the SLT by beating the Jacks in the championship game for the 1st time in history 4. the NCAA cancelling the national tournament soundcloud.com/foxsportsrapidcity/click-here-for-guest-line-upnate-brown-show-march-12-202022:45 mark for the interview Blows my mind how polite, upbeat and poised she always is, even after just getting hit with the sledge hammer of the bad news that the tourney was cancelled. Amazing young lady.

One thing that always struck me was how she went about her business with a big smile on her face. I think she truly appreciates her gifts and how blessed she is.

Thanks for posting the link. These were very good. I especially liked Liv Korngable, who really spoke from the heart. As any Coyote fan knows, this is a very special group of women, and they all represented themselves, the university and the WBB program very well. Thanks, John Thayer, for doing this.
