Matt Zimmer's MVFC predictions: www.argusleader.com/story/blogs/mattzimmer/2017/07/17/zims-missouri-valley-football-preseason-ballot/477769001/Nothing too shocking here. I can't fault him for any predictions based on prior results. MY hope would be that we could surprise some people, creep into the top 4 and have Streveler, Jensen and somebody like BVR, Brooks, Jackson and/or Fredrick from the offense and Rambo, Cline and maybe a surprise S/LB on defense. I know our offense will be good and score points, but I think our defense will have some hardships early on.

The offense will be good and put up points. While the defense might not be able to shut teams down like a stone wall, the question is can they be opportunistic and create turnovers. +/- turnovers is what this season will hinge on. If the D can create turnovers and the offense converts those into points will determine how well this season goes.

I tend to agree. I think Zimmer's team ranks were pretty realistic.
Hopefully early in the season the offense can outscore the defensive liabilities while they gel and then when the MVFC schedule starts be able to grind it out if they have to.

Danny Rambo is getting no love, but I think he is set for a big year at CB.

So SDSU gets 10 players rated as pre-season top conference players for their position, NDSU gets 9 and the team is rated 2nd, and USD rated 5th gets Zero? I understand they are both higher ranked teams with great expectations and many established returning players, but it might be a little unrealistic to rank us 5th in the conference without a single top player? Youngstown St (FCS Runner-up team in 2016) only had a single top player? Matt Zimmer might be drinking the Rabbit/Bison Kool-Aid a little too much. Pre-season polls are always so much fun and they rarely pan out, pretty sure the final all-conference team might have more than a single USD player, especially if we are 5th or higher.

His offensive list looks pretty fair. USD has a lot of weapons on offense but doesn't really have that one standout, just a bunch of really good ones. List became a joke when I saw he actually picked a "Best longsnapper".
I also feel like Rambo & Wessel should be on the list.

The conference determines what positions are listed in the preseason team not Zim. Long snapper has been on the preseason and post season list for a couple of years. Although not selected as all conference last year, Trenhaile, SDSU's long snapper did not have a single missed snap in four years as their long snapper. This is an underrated position as the quickness and accuracy of the snap has a lot to do with blocked punts, pats and field goals.

Danny Rambo is getting no love, but I think he is set for a big year at CB. I'm pretty sure the 2 corners selected (Davontae Harris, Illinois St. & Jordan Brown, SDSU) play strong side. As of last season, Harris played strong side...

I think our defense is going to surprise a lot of people! First of all have Wessel being back is huge...Jet played his heart out last season but he was not a middle linebacker. His athleticism was his strong point. The D line is going to have a combination of experience, more size and the ends are faster this year. The secondary will hold its own. I wouldn't sleep on the defense...I think you will see a huge improvement.

Another observation is that the Yotes on both sides of the ball should benefit considerablely in their 2nd season under the new coaches' systems! Once you are more familiar with a system you can react quicker rather than think then react. Often preseason polls are half wrong by the end of the season.

10 Jacks and no Coyotes on the all conference team, come on!!! Streveler is a better quarterback then Christian. This reminds me when the Jack Women had all those players on the all conference team and ended up finishing 3rd. I do think the Jacks will be very good but does he really think the Jacks have that many more all conference players then the Coyotes do.

As yoyebewithyou stated, yotes have good offensive players, but no standout yet. There are a lot of wr who get time so there will be no guy with huge numbers. After Fredrick the RB position is unknown. The same will be said for the DL. IMO Rambo could have made it and Wessel has talent but also had to sit out a year. I don't put too much stock into preseason lists. There are a lot of players who will make the season end list and many on his list will be absent. Ah, the dog days of summer there isn't much to talk about, gotta love it.

I think the list is a reflection of the latest round of cuts at AL. Zim has had little (zero?) time to think/cover football, so he put in the players on the teams he knows best. Nothing sinister - he just doesn't have the time to research if the Yotes (or WIU or UNI...) have a corner or lineman that is top notch.

Come on guys...Take off your rose colored glasses and look at actual results. Christian is the reigning MVFC player of the year. On what planet is that guy not picked first? In addition, he is throwing to EASILY the two best targets in the country. It is an easy pick at this stage. Doesn't mean it will happen - I HOPE it doesn't - but only a fool would be surprised that a sports writer would pick him as First Team QB. These polls mean NOTHING, other than I hope they motivate our guys to prove these people wrong. They are based 100% on players from last season's EOY team being returners. If you don't think Matt's list ends up closely resembling the list that comes out of MVFC media days, then be prepared to be surprised. Click here: www.valley-football.org/news/2016/11/28/IMPORTED_STORY_9187_131417834791265852.aspxSee some similarities??? gopheryote - this has nothing to do with cuts at the AL. This is a blog post from Matt, doing his job, generating content, in his blog. He even provides a disclaimer.
