Time to stop worrying about this type of negative press and show what we can do on the field! Fall camp start Saturday. Obviously we are the Rodney Dangerfield of the MVFC and we will not be getting any respect until we earn it, guess we give them the Triple Lindy (Back to School Movie Reference) and turn the polls upside down. Looking forward to seeing all these prognosticators proven wrong! Go Yotes!

Totally agree. Respect is earned, so go earn it on the field.

I swear UNI could go 0-11 and still be ranked. They get the most notoriety with the least production of any team nationally.

The Coyotes didn't really get the benefit of the doubt against any of the teams that they were competitive with in the standings last season such as Western Illinois or Illinois State. If the Coyotes had handled the fourth quarter better last year then they would be more proven coming into this year but the reality is they let some games slip away and it probably cost them 2 or 3 spots in the pre-season poll. The Coyotes will have to do it the hard way to prove they are better then some of the teams they ended up getting ranked behind. They have Illinois State, Western Illinois and UNI all on the road and those will all be key games in determining whether the Yotes are a playoff team or not.

We were also picked 8th I believe in the Summit preseason-standings for MBB. I don't have a problem being ranked lower. We haven't proven we should be ranked, but that does not mean that they can't finish much higher on the list. If they can close out games and hold on to leads they can make the playoffs. Go Yotes

Something I was curious about, so I looked it up. It appears as over 70 players on the roster are now "Nielson" guys with the addition of the new freshman to the roster. After graduation, there will be very few players left from the Glenn era.

"South Dakota - 3 (0); South Dakota State - 10 (9)" This really is a amazing to me. Almost half of SDSU's starters are considered pre-season 1st team all conference. USD has zero. The pre-season hype for SDSU is off the charts, it's going to be awesome to watch them choke it this season. I guess anything less than an SDSU championship season should be considered a failure, and a finish out of the cellar should be considered a success for USD. The level of disrespect for USD football is really incredible to me. I see it all the time on these message boards but it appears it is now institutionalized into the media. I could almost understand it if we were going through winless seasons, but by most accounts Nielson is building a solid program and the talent level has increased. I guess not though. Oh well. Admittedly, I don't follow USD football closely enough to know, but at what position(s) do you feel USD was slighted a first-team all conference selection? Who should have made the team, instead of the selected player, who didn't? (BTW, I'm asking in all honesty - no smack). The top teams are always going to have the most picks along with some that are reaching a bit. I don't feel that USD was slighted in any way. One really big head scratcher is the FB Kane Louscher? He has essentially zero stats. There has to be a FB somewhere in the league with registered stats that would be more deserving. Although it is a position that is not heavily used anymore so it may be a hard pick. I was also surprised at Mengarelli on first team. I will be very surprised if he is on any of the all conference lists at the end of the year.

Mengarelli would be second. Mengarelli did have about 1100 total yards last season so he wasn't terrible but I would think there would be somebody else better in the conference. I guess they do list 3 RB's so that covers 1/3 of the starters in the league so that might have factored in.

Excited for 2017 Coyote FB, "The Boys are Back In Town"!! Looking forward to the camp updates, especially from the coaches on position reports. I'm going to be anxiously awaiting the DL report, as I think it will have a big impact on our chances for moving to the upper levels of the MVFC. Love this coaching staff, get your season tickets guys (and gals) it's going to be a hot item in the years to come!

First day of the 2017 Fall Camp starts today. Time for some predictions.
My official pick is 7-4 for the year. I see this team going 2-1 in the non-conference and 5-3 in the MVFC. I will admit this is my optimistic take on the season. My pessimistic pick would be 5-6.
This is an important year for the program. Put up a great year and the recruiting momentum can continue to accelerate. I think the Yotes have some really good things in their favor this year:
*Streveler is in his second year as a true QB - knows the system and team. I think he learned from last year's experience. Be careful with throwing the ball to the sidelines (too many INTs and Pick 6's early in the season.) I think he also learned to be a little more careful with taking too many unnecessary shots when running the ball. Sliding and stepping out of bounds is not always a bad thing. Great athleticism and Experience at QB is a great asset.
* I think the surprise of this season will be the step forward we see from the OL and RBs. I expect USD to be a top 3 rushing team in the MVFC this year and more importantly a team that can get the tough yards up the middle when they need to.
* If USD can improve by one more TD on average per game on offense and prevent one more TD per game on Defense that will have a huge cumulative impact. If you use last year's conference stats as a rough guide - That would move the offense from 6th in the conference (scoring offense) to 2nd and move the defense from 6th in the conference (scoring defense) to 4th. We all know that many MVFC games are close - several contests are one score games. This will make a big difference if both offense and defense take a big step like this (and I believe with the athletes they have and the work they have put in that they will.)
* This will be a team that has more depth across the board than any of the previous D1 teams. Depth has been USD's weakness over the past few seasons - In my view it is why the end of the seasons have been so bad ( as well as the reason many games USD slipped in the 4th Q). I expect the added depth to show in each of these - even though ending the year with NDSU and SDSU is quite the challenge.
* Overall team speed will be the fastest USD has put on the field. This will show in every phase of the game and will be an advantage for special teams on coverage and returns.
NDSU (36-4) and SDSU (28-12) are the winningest teams the past 5 years in the conference. They are closely followed by Illinois St (27-13), YSU and UNI (both are 22-18). Every other team in the MVFC has a losing record in the MVFC over that stretch. Can USD break into the top half of the MVFC? Top three? I think they will be top half in 2017 when everything settles.

Nice to get back to the topic at hand. I have been teetering what I think will happen. Months ago I picked the following
Wins: Drake, North Dakota, Western Illinois, Indiana State and Southern Illinois. Losses: Bowling Green, Youngstown, Illinois State, UNI, NDSU and SDSU
Of those games I feel the most solid with Drake, Indiana State, Southern Illinois and NDSU as I just don't see those games going the other direction. I am leaning in the direction of being correct with UND, Western Illinois, Illinois State, UNI and SDSU. That leaves 2 games that I am almost completely on the fence with. Bowling Green and Youngstown. With Bowling Green I think the Coyotes have a better chance to win that game as they do in any other game I picked as a loss other then Youngstown which is even with that game. IMO that leaves 7 games that could truly go either way. That could be the difference in finishing somewhere between 3-8 and 10-1.
If the Coyotes can beat Bowling Green that would be a pretty big springboard for the season. With that type of momentum the Coyotes could legitimately start 6-0. Of course that is the dream type of a start but with a win over BG the Coyotes would likley have at least a 50% shot of being able to win each individual game through the first 6. On the other hand lose to BG and suddenly the UND game becomes a must win at home to have a good chance at making post season.
What ever happens the Yotes have many games this year that could hinge on how well they play with the lead, play in the 4th quarter and stop the run. Those are what I consider the three biggest keys to the season in general. If all three of those factors improve then having 7 or more wins is not only possible but probable.

I might have already made a prediction, I can't remember, but I'm going to take a crack at it:
@ Drake - W. Tune-up game. I'll be concerned if we don't win by at least 3 TDs. @ Bowling Green - L. They had a truly dreadful run in 2016, starting 1-8 with the W being a very fortunate win against UND, but won 3 straight to close out the year. I'm going to guess they've improved enough to handle us. UND - W. We owe these guys a sound defeat after the last two games in Grand Forks. Gave away last year's game, will handle them at home. @ WIU - W. Another game we gave away in 2016, one that meant a whole lot to WIU players seeking revenge. I think WIU is set for a decline this year and we take care of business in Macomb. Youngstown State - L. It will take some DDays magic to pull this one out. YSU won't make another miracle run to the title game, but will be quite good again this year. Indiana State - W. Probably the most winnable game on the schedule besides Drake. @ Illinois State - L. They finished last year strong and bring back 14 starters. I don't think we take this one. Southern Illinois - W. They'll throw the ball all over the place again, but our secondary will be much improved this year. @ UNI - W. UNI sucks. @ NDSU - L. They'll remember our last trip and the close call in Vermillion, won't take us lightly. SDSU - W. We erase the drought to clinch our first playoff berth. Round 1 - W. In our first FCS playoff appearance we host a Pioner League or OVC team and get an easy win. Round 2 - L. We travel to a Dakota school and lose the rematch.
8-5 with an exit in the 2nd round of the playoffs.
I reserve the right to change my prediction at any point in time and act like this post never happened because I will not remember it.

I haven't been able to keep up on the expectations for the Yotes this year - can we get a recap at this point? Do we have another scenario like MBB where we knew most/all positions would be better than the year before, even though many didn't play the prior year? Would think that is certainly possible, given it is Nielsen's 2nd year.

I feel SD gets at least 5 wins in the MVFC. Both UxD schools finally have respectable dept in football, since joining DivI. You and SDSU will be tough opponents. We will have more than our hands full with the Yotes.
