There has been more and more talk that this new project is getting closer and closer to reality. Nothing is official but the wispering is getting a little louder lately.
Does anyone have a prediction as to when we could hear of a big announcement of the details of when, how and what.
I have one wish as far as this arena is concerned and this wish by far outweighs any other aspect of this new project.
1. USD lets not forget the single most important aspect of this project. We need to have an arena with as many seats close to the court as possible. Build it up, up, up and not back. We need to be on top of the action and need fans to feel they have a good view. Don't copy the Taylor Center in Mankato or any other arena like the Corn Palace in Mitchell where the 20th row feels like it's 100 feet back from the press row.
50 feet up and 30 feet back is much better than 50 feet back and 20 feet up and it also contains sound much better as well. That would really make for an exciting atmosphere.

Speaking of the devil Very nice informative article here in the Argus www.argusleader.com/article/20110123/SPORTS0203/101230344/1002/sportsSayler wants a 6,000 seat basketball venue with the possibility to expand to a second deck in the future. I think 6,000 seats is a perfect number to start out with. Good job Sayler. You seem to have a vision that everyone else seems scared to take on but only consider a dream.

I also think 6,000 is a good number. Maybe borrow some elements from the new Auburn facility (which is well outside of our price range, but has a very intimate seating arrangement)

For those that just come in to read the board and don't post, here is a chance to let your opinions be known on what you would like to see in an arena. I am sure Saylor would like to hear from the fans that actually will be sitting in the new gem. He said in his interview that USD could still be influenced by an architech and I am sure USD fans can still have a say. He seems to be leaning toward the UNI layout (which I think would get a sound decision) but certainly it's not cut and dry yet.
If anyone has an idea or an arena they like post it here. It's rather simple to post images. Just right click on an image you would like to post on here. save it to the folder on your computer that you would like to save it on your computer. Then when you go to the normal new message or in this instance reply just hit "browse" and it will take you to your options for where you want to take the image from. Look on your computer where you saved the image and simply highlight it. Once you do just select it and it will be saved in the attachment line of the message. Once you submit the message that image should post on your message.

Just to add a bit more, the talk of a new arena is absolutely energizing all around. It would be sitting proof about the direction USD is headed. It would be the newest and best facility in the state of South Dakota by far. It would definately get people to want to come to town to see a game or more. It's absolutely puts this transition into a tanglible form. This would be a great thing for the athletic department and would give USD their niche and put them at an advantage when it comes to the basketball programs, and really the entire athletic department as a hole. We can really thank David Sayler for putting talk into action. We can also thank Jim Abbott and the future donors for making this happen as well. The day when USD runs out to the court to celebrate this occassion will be a great day on the campus of USD. I can't wait for that day. I am definately going to be there. Also for future donors to this building I am going to remember who is/was responsible to make it happen and make an effort to give my business to those businesses any reasonable chance I get.

I think the talk abut a new arena, and the heartbeat of it getting stronger is so fricking exciting. In the Sioux City Journal article, AD Sayler talks about having it complted by 2012-2013 year. That is just 2 years from now.
Things are really taking place and shape on campus, not it is our time to make the commitments to go to games, back the U, and give what we can.
There will be some people that can give more, but it is very important that all Coyote fans buy into this. Keep the talk going, we need this arena bad.

I heard this week that the U already has 75% of the money raised for the arena. Don't know how true this is but if it is projected to be done in two years I have to believe the money is in place already.

Yote 53, I heard that too before I moved, that a lot of money has been "raised." of course USD can't come even close to saying that until the BOR says good with it.

I think pledged is a better word. Saylor alluded to that when he referenced alot of people being "on board".

For those interested I am going to start something fun to hopefully spur on some participation. I am going to surf the mid major athletics sights looking for basketball arenas that are between $20-40 Million in cost and built in 1990 or later. I will be focusing on the mid major conferences but will take suggestions if anyone knows of any other arena's (such as Minnesota State Mankatos) for consideration.
If you have any basketball arenas that you want to have nominated for the contest make sure to post them here. I am basically going to save several photo's of different basketball arenas around the coutry and will start polls where USD fans can vote on their favorite arena's that they would like to see USD model after.
Considering what Saylor just said in recent interviews we are looking at building something in the neighborhood of $32 million with 6,000 seats. To make the poll an arena must be between 20 million to 40 million in total cost and contain between 3,500 and 8,500 seats. Those stats should be available at websites.
