That's a good post. It is a nice looking, state of the art facility going up at Towson State. Coyote Fan, you do alot of research on this, and I think if AD Sayler asks for an advisory group you should volunteer. I am dead serious, you have come up with some great ideas. It is going to be awhile before we get the go ahead, and will take some serious time to come up with the $50M, but I do think it is going to happen. I am extremely pleased with AD Saylers approach to getting this done.

I agree with your sentiment about being pleased with Saylor. He cannot be paid enough and has been a valuable asset to this University in the short time that he has already been here. I saw him at the game playing around with a young kid on the track behind the stands. I don't know if it was his kid or a random kid but he was having fun with him and seems very accessable. The debt we will owe to him when his time at USD eventually comes to an end may not be able to have a price tag on it.
As far as the arena I have been doing some research and will share what I come up with. The Towson State arena was a really good example so I posted the info so everyone could check it out. I am going through every single mid major right now which consists or probably about 200 schools. I have a website I am using that allows me to sort through all the arenas of all the D1 basketball schools in the country. I am about halfway done and have saved about 20-30 images of arenas I obtained from websites. My plan when I get done going through all the schools is to pick what I consider the best 16 arenas and put them into a tourney format for all the message board posters to vote on. I am leaning towards the newer ones but I also want to include different looks and different layouts for everyone to get a good idea of what we could be looking at.
I will say this much. We can get a pretty sweet arena for 32Mil. I realise the prices have gone up in recent years but I have seen some nice arenas for under that pricetag. Granted some of those were built in the 80's or 90's but they also cost much less than 32mil.
I would be more than happy to share my research and if anyone is interested I would be willing to do alot of legwork if I need to. I would greatfully volunteer my time if it's wanted. I want to see USD do this right. The bottom line and whats most important is the quality of seating and how it combines with making a great home court advantage for the Yotes. Everything else is just gravy. If we do this right we can make Frost Arena look like a second rate facility, and we all know Frost is a good arena. This is USD chance to really put an imprint on the D1 move.
I have gone to the UNI message board and read through their archives. They seem to really like their arena and USD has come out and hinted that they will model after that arena. Based on what I have read and the photos that I have seen of it, that would be a very good decision on the part of USD. One thing I like is many of the newer arena tend to build smart. up more than back. I will say it again. Up first, back second. It creates a better seat view of the court, gets fans closer to the court and above the court and is definately going to help contain the noise as well. If anyone has been to a football game at Mankato's stadium where the Mavs play and Minnesota Vikings have training camp that is what I am talking about. They have one of the smartest designs from a football field. I loved the view I had of the game from their stadium.

I'm glad to see that Coyotes Fan's mom gave him his computer back!! Back off!!!!!!!!!!! Geez. For all the bashing some of you have done to Coyote Fan in the past, you sure overreacted about one sarcastic comment. Just because he was on sabatical for awhile now he is untouchable? It was just a stupid joke and way less harsh than previous comments made on this site. I think some of you need to back off!!!!!

I have been doing alot of thinking about the potential new basketball arena and may just put in a ton of time this weekend to finishing my research and posting alot of info in the form of an arena basketball bracket challenge.
I am so damned excited about the potential of this project that I have been a bit on the obsessive side today. I really believe that this project could absolutely turn the mens and womens basketball teams into a premier mid major of the midwest. If as a University we want to be great we can be great.
I think how this facility is built could be the start of an amazing movement of both the men and women and if it's done right and marketed right (maybe with the help of marketing people and with the help of Learfied [assuming they are actually on board]) it could be a major, MAJOR boost to the basketball programs.
This is my line of thinking. This arena should be built with the purpose of making the experience of attending a Coyote basketball game something that is better than anything that the common fan could get anywhere close to seeing live anywhere around this area. Something that SDSU couldn't compete with, something that NDSU couldn't compete with and even something that Creighton, Drake and UNI would even turn their heads to see what USD is doing. I am a believer in setting the standard. I am a believer in making others look at USD and say "Wow what they are doing is incredible, what they are doing is what I would love to have my college do".
Well USD has a chance to do that and a chance to do that soon and it could all start with the new basketball arena. USD could and should build the arena with one basic principal in mind. Build it so it is designed structurally and accoustically to be the LOUDEST arena in American. I know USD FB Alum has mentioned this as an idea for marketing the football program and I don't want to steal his thunder but the basketball program can live the notion because they can build with that marketing idea in mind.
When it comes to building the loudest arena in American I mean that literally. The structure would have to be built to contain noise but not only that it would have to be built with the intention of getting people to cheer. What I mean by that is to give the most possible fans the best view of the game as possible. Most likely that would be to build it where fans get close to the court by building it UP and NOT BACK. That even goes as far as how the seats are built and or constructed as well. Build the seats comforable but also build them where they are tilted forward enough where it is easy to get in and out of your seat to stand up to cheer. I have noticed in some arenas (for some reason Mankato and the UNO bucket seats comes to mind) I have sat in my seat and felt I have sunk in too much where it is actually a bit of an inconvenience to stand up and cheer. If the big donors need the comfy sink back in your seat don't stand up and cheer seats, built them one section where they can just sink back and watch the game with the comfort in mind of a recliner chair where it's easier to fall asleep than it is to get up and cheer. Make those sections higher priced if need be but for the majority of the arena make it psychologically as easy as possible to cheer. Of course there would need to be other steps made as well (whatever those should be leave that up to the game day atmosphere pro's to figure out) to get people to be almost obligated to live up to the title of loudest arena in America.
The arena, the fans, the marketers (Learfield included) and just as importantly the arena designers should build with this idea in mind from the very beginning. I am so impassioned about this project and so motivated that I am willing to volunteer any time that is needed and do any research that is needed to help in any way that I can to hopefully see this project happen and be the BEST DAMNED ARENA IN AMERICA. Oh it feels good to scream about this and it feels GREAT to be able to dream big and to hopefully see those dreams turn into reality.
So Sayler if you reading and listening I am willing to do whatever is reasonably possible to help in any way that is needed.

I may be a different animal than the rest of the normal population but I get so energized to go to games knowing the gameday atmosphere is going to be crazy. If USD had this kind of a situation where the arena was really loud and energized it would be extremely difficult to not want to come to USD basketball games. I believe that would be true with the many others as well, even some that have no ties to USD. If the game day atmosphere is so fun that people wouldn't want to NOT come I gaurantee there would be more season tickets sold, more general excitement of USD sports, more winning on the court etc. It would all feed off one another. There would be more donations, more people talking about USD, more message board traffic it could all get crazy in a good way.
I am so-so-so hungry for USD athletics to do well and I see the arena project as the start of something truley AWSOME at THEE University of South Dakota.

Once again, a new basketball facility/upgrade to the Dome has been tabled by the BOR. Guess people can't raise their own money anymore. Great job BOR! This requires no money on the state's part, but good job tabling it once again! The BOR is completely useless and it's just a power grab for them.

It's time we let our disatisfaction with the BOR be heard. This money will all be privately raised, why do they need to keep tabling this, and what excuse are they going to come up with next?

I agree, this news sucks! But at least they didn't reject it. I guess tabling it is better than voting it down considering all the budget drama going on.

Yes, there is budget drama, however, the arena project is to be completed with private funds.
Frustrating.
