They have their own facility project to fight about up in Sioux Falls. Besides, it's not like the Argus ever really covered USD anyway but I am suprised the SDSU approval was not front page breaking news.

P&D said during the live chat that they were told of the news, and then I guess a release mustve come out soon after.
Was hoping there'd be more discussion from people on the chat, but it was still good to see.

I'd like to point out the bias of the Argus Leader in yet another article. Whenever USD and SDSU are mentioned in the same article, whether it is about these stadium projects, updates about D1 progress, or discussing the Summit/MVFC, SDSU is always mentioned before USD, Jackrabbits goes before Coyotes, and the first quote always goes to the representative from SDSU.
Growing up in Iowa I noticed this my whole life whenever Iowa and Iowa State were mentioned in an article regarding college athletics. Iowa was always mentioned first because they are perceived as the dominate program in that state (well, they actually are, there isn't much debate there).
I may be nitpicking but the Argus is planting the message in its reader's minds that SDSU is the dominate program in this state and that simply isn't true. The programs are on equal footing in the same conferences for all sports.

Not trying to start an issue about something so trivial considering the good news for both schools, but I believe the way the Argus writes is due in part to the overwhelming evidence they have about SDSU fans' readership of the Argus. The Argus writes to sell papers and in their opinion, SDSU has a stronger following so they cater to them. I don't think its a matter of bias as much as a matter of what their research has shown.

The reason doesn't matter, the bias gets old.
On the flip side, the reason a lot of USD people DON'T buy or read the Argus is because of they're slanted coverage. Maybe if they catered a little bit to USD readers then they would get more subscriptions from us. Why would I buy an Argus now with its total lack of USD coverage and obvious bias?

Preceding 3 comments are probably best placed in a new thread, but rather than start a new thread I will add to the prior comments.
It is obvious that SDSU athletics gets more Argus coverage than USD, at least with regards to what is available on the internet. I cancelled my paper subscription several years ago. I don't have access to any readership info, so I won't try to speculate as to the reasons.
Terry Vandrovec devotes much more time to all topics SDSU than Mick Garry does to USD. Mick appears to have more none USD assignments than Terry. Mick appears to be more old school than Terry. Terry's blog is updated almost daily, sometimes with rather meaningless info, but it does keep the SDSU name out there. Terry also utilizes other technology, such as video interviews. Mick doesn't update his blog near as frequently ( last update was back in May). Mick does an excellent job on some of his more in depth articles. His recent article on Sayler's foray into leading the Yote's path to D1 is a good example.
All newspapers have incorporated technology to different degrees and have established more of an online presence. It seems to me, that with regards to reporting news and sports, the line between newspapers (traditionally accessed via paid subscriptions) and television (funded with advertising) is becoming more blurred. The Argus Leader appears to be ahead of the curve, for better or worse, in venturing further and further away from the traditional role of newspapers. With Terry incorporating more technology into his reporting, either by his design or by more time and tools being made available to him by the Argus, SDSU ends up with more coverage.
Personally I always check the Press & Dakotan first for USD sporting news. I feel like they have a good balance between reporting quick and frequent updates and at the same time providing good indepth reporting. However, I continue to check the Argus website in hopes that I will occasionally find a USD story in addition to keeping track of SDSU (especially their contests with rival NDSU).

Thread drift, it happens.
I agree there many more media outlets and sources we can get our information from today than we could years ago. The fact remains the Argus is the state's newspaper. It is not a good thing that USD gets less coverage. It's not just less coverage I was pointing out, it is the place in which USD is always referred to in reference to SDSU. Given, Terry V did write this particular article but this is a trend.
I'm not going to purchase the Argus until things change.

I think that part of the lopsided coverage is simply due to timing. SDSU went through the transition process first and for awhile was the only Division I school in the state. USD is only a year away from qualifying for post-season play in Division I athletics. I would expect that the coverage will get more even between the two universities as their D-I playoff status becomes equal, especially when USD qualifies one or more of its teams for post-season play. It seems like forever to get through transition, both officially and through the public's perception. The patience is about to pay off for Coyote fans. Only one more year to go.

The trend of SDSU getting more coverage goes way back - well before the move to Division 1 by both institutions. The extra coverage has been earned. (Hate to say it, but the Jackrabbit fan base has earned it. over the years)
SDSU's and USD's Athletic Department overall health have grown since leaving D2. The gap however has widened further between the two schools in the following areas (all somewhat inter-related): Total AD budget for all programs, individual fund raising and corporate sponsorships, cumulative athletic event attendance, general fan interest , coverage in the Argus, gear availability at retailers - Scheels/Target/Walmart etc, radio coverage of games across the region, and finally undergraduate enrollment.
Sayler seems to be attacking these issues. Really hope "Coyote Nation" responds.

Easy to find USD gear at Scheel's in Sioux City. Can't find SDSU stuff there. Just saying location of the schools has something to do with where the gear is sold. That said, when I was in SF couple weeks ago they had more Iowa and Nebraska gear than either USD or SDSU. There was a littl more SDSU stuff, but not by a wide margin. I think merchandise availability has a lot to do with the logo change. I think we'll be seeing more stuff in the near future.
Agree, the Argus has been slanted towards SDSU since I can remember, back to the late 80's. Nothing to do with D1.
Agree, Sayler is attacking these issues.
