I love the optimism around here, but I'm pretty sure the hardest part of our schedule is still in front of the Yotes. It is a long season so I wouldn't put the cart in front of the horse. Unquestionably. We've barely scratched the surface on this season. We start conference play with two teams that we have not beat even once since joining the MVFC. I think everyone else can temper their expectations when they realize nearly every win might be accomplishing something the team has never done before. I expect we finish weaker than we started. The lack of depth we have in certain areas will show. My hope is that we win enough games early to lock up our playoff spot. Maybe we even go into those last two games alive for a share of the title. Gotta escape Macomb first. Sorry... had to get back on and post again... fade in the end??? Speffff!!! Cough, cough, cough... You do know that most of Nielson recruits are from perenial winning programs... right??? The 2017 IS NOT THE 2016 TEAM OR ANY TEAM BEFORE IT. Get used to winning!

I'm with thebacksackdad here. This feels like early in the MBB season last year. Is it not clear and evident that through the first 3 games this team is obviously at a different level than previous years? Better talent, size, skill players, speed, scheme, and leadership? In the past MVFC teams had one or two of those that the Yotes didn't, but I don't think that is the case this year. Not to mention, no one is claiming an easy walk to a NC or anything wild here, but this team right now is as good (and my opinion is slightly better) than the top couple in the league. Partially because that gap between NDSU/ISUr and everyone else has closed in general, partially because Streveler is a B1G level QB on an FCS team, and partially because the team is buying everything Coach Nielsen is selling. Or am I over-reacting? When it was said that the toughest part of the schedule was still coming, were you implying we would only win by 2 or 3 TD's instead of by 5 TD's?

I would like to see if there's a correlation between winning in high school and being a successful player in college. I kind of always believe that once you get to campus, your high school career doesn't matter at all. There's arguments on both sides. Winners know how to win and guys from less successful teams had to work harder to get noticed. Anybody ever seen any research on this?

However, I do also think a team needs the players that come from programs that are used to the expectation that you're going to win every game. Teams need both.

The glass is more than half full baby! ... I'm looking forward to meeting you at a game so we can put something on the line that I'm right (like some Spotted Cow???) and am saving my re-quote of my prediction for the season for the end of the season. You know... right now i think if the team went undefeated through the regular season it wouldn't surprise me to see posts that we'll be one and done in the playoffs. Too each their own road I guess. You'll have to excuse my reserved tone, might be a product of watching this team win 9 conference games the last 5 years. I expect a win in Macomb to setup a monumental DDays game, but every single game in this conference is a battle - especially on the road. This 2017 team passes the eye test, it looks miles ahead of last year, but I'm not taking anything for granted. I have the feeling the team won't either. My prediction right now is 5-3 conference record. I'm game to make a fun wager with you if you have the team finishing better and want to back that prediction up. I'll be making the trip to Macomb.

I have been reading around a bit on other forums and I have come to the conclusion that other teams fans just don't know about this program and how much they are on the rise. The latest thing I have been reading is that if Steveler should ever go down that USD would basically be done as a contender. Many Jacks fans in particular think that if Chris ever went down that USD would suddenly become a poor football team. I haven't read even one single fan that has knowledge about how good Austin Simmons is if we would ever need to turn to him. He isn't the runner that Steveler is but he isn't exactly a stationary quarterback. I would say that Simmons is likely every bit the passer that Streveler is and possibly more. He led the Coyotes to a win when he had to start last year against Illinois State in what was an impressive win for the Yotes. As much as Chris is a special player this team would be far from done if we had to turn to Simmons. Far from done. Other people just don't seem to understand that and they can continue to think that.

Amazing that they say about Strevy going down our team would be done...I didn't know he played all the defensive positions and was throwing and catching the ball??? Wow how ignorant! Well let's see if Taryn Christian went down would the bunnies be done? If Easton stick went down would NDSU be done?? I can tell you the Austin Simmons is a talented QB. The people that make these statements need to do their homework before spewing!

It would be one thing if Simmons had no meaningful experience, but he already won a game against a playoff team as a freshman.
Something tells me the posters in question just want to discredit USD...shocking. I said elsewhere that they'll only respect other teams as they find it convenient, so don't expect much praise on other message boards.

I made the argument last season that Simmons should start at QB and Strev move to a slot receiver type roll.
Yeah, Austin Simmons is freaking good.

The biggest thing be overlooked by outsiders is the ability of this staff to build depth. Not only do we have Simmons as an experienced backup QB, but look how we were prepared to handle the loss of a starting lineman Saturday and never miss a beat! How about last week when we had multiple players sick at WR and DB, and others stepped in and performed like Dale Williamson. We have been without Van Roekel, yet our WR position is very strong. This staff has been building depth that will help us in the tough MVFC schedule ahead. Look at the experience they have been giving our young RBs, how valuable will this be to get us through the season. The D-line was a question mark going into the season, but we have seen multiple players getting time and performing well at the DT and DE positions and have yet to get Jake Loehr back. This staff has done a tremendous job in the first 3 games building the depth they know is necessary to get through the MVFC. Streveler has been a key component to our success, and seeing him go down would be a big loss, like it would be to any team to lose their starting QB, but I am confident in the ability of this coaching staff to prepare the depth needed to absorb any player loss. Let the others continue talk on their boards before we play them and enjoy the talk the week after we play them! If they did not fear us they wouldn't be talking about us, especially weeks before we play them! FeaRed!
