Just giving my 2 cents on the Des Moines area for those that are travelling for the first game. A few years back I worked in Des Moines and am a little familiar with the area. It's a town of about 500k with a very limited "bad area". My family and myself are staying at Drury Inn in West Des Moines which is less than 10 minutes from Drake. West Des Moines is a burb of Des Moines and has all been practical built within the last 10 years...so it's relatively "yuppie" as it's home of Wells Fargo bank. A good bar within walking distance, across the parking lot it Wellman's Rooftop Pub. As the name implies, it is 2 floors, the upper floor being a rooftop. They also have a outdoor patio on the lower level. Good food and a bigger sports bar type atmosphere. Des Moines has a lot of very attractive women and this place is a magnet for them. Ratio's are probably around 8 women for every 3 men (and gorgeous!!!). Wellman's also has another bar closer to the campus but I have never went to it. I've heard it's equally as good but always stayed closer to home. There is also another 2 or 3 other bars within shorter walking distance of Drury, "Shotgun Betty's (another favorite of mine) = COUNTRY BAR, "Tonic Inn" right next to Shotgun Betty's...a bit smaller but women non the less (not a husband/wife bar) and another place I forget the name of but I never went to other than once if that says anything. I think it's more of a Jazz place but am not sure. There's many more very nice hotels and pubs in that area you can't miss anywhere. If you're planning on coming in a bit early with your wife and she shops, this is also where Jordan Creek shopping Center is. She will love it. Stop in one of the close hotels and they'll have coupons for places at Jordan Creek...like 20% deals. I bought my wife (2) $350 jackets, on clearance, with the coupons, cost me about $250. That'll make sure you have a great time when in relaxation mode at the hotel!!!
So I mentioned things around Jordan Creek...there's another within 5 or 7 minutes but I can't think of the name. Really nice residential neighborhood, always live music, mostly outdoor seating...a 40 year old average crowd but all ages are there. The sliders are a great deal! I'll try to find the name and post it later.
For the downtown crowd. Downtown is fun as well. I had mentioned that I just liked to stay closer to where I stayed and there's more, in my opinion in West Des Moines off Mills Civic Prkwy. I only went downtown a couple times. There's a group of bars in the same relative area, one being "Ye Ol Bait Shop". They have about 100 different type of bars on tap. Not a really big place but it's more urban as opposed to yuppie and there's more bars in the area. You're on your own there as I didn't go there much. Not sure how the hotels in the area are either, but it's the state capitol so some have to be up to snuff.
I also have to add that the people in Des Moines are top notch (the only jerks I met were some college boys from Iowa State and they were probably jerks because their girlfriends offered to share a taxi home). Speaking of which...do not drink n drive. DM is on that big time. ...and unfortunately, the taxi service sucks...if u call before midnight you'll get picked up within a half hour. Call after 1 and you may wait until 3 so that's trick in itself. Good luck there (why I'm staying within walking distance). But back on to the point...very friendly, genuine, honest people. Not your big City type. Most are transplants from farms within the surrounding 250 miles.
When I worked in DM, it was also during the summer and maybe 2 or 3 days of the month was below 90 degrees...so plan on hot weather. There's a beach park on the river that's pretty good for the family...don't remember the name but it's easy to look up. Hope this information was helpful and any body that has any questions, feel free to post and I'll do my best to answer.
GO YOTES!!!!
btw...I've been starting to troll Drake boards...anybody have any thoughts?

I texted someone I know from DM and the place I had a hard time remembering the name of is "Saints" on 50th n Westtown. Great music on an outdoor patio. OK to bring a family. He also told me a new place opened up next door but have now clue about that place.

Downtown area is loaded with bars and hotels within easy walking distance and is right next to Drake's campus, not really walking distance but maybe a 5 minute drive. I go down to DSM for work often and am pretty familiar with the area. Ye Olde Bait Shop, High Life Lounge, Hessen Haus, Court Ave Brewery, PBR Bar, Mickey's, and more, there are a ton of places downtown. You can also cross the DSM River downtown and head over to the East Village where there are all sorts of bars and restaurants.

Would think the Howling Pack will be hosting some sort of pre-party.

Thanks for the info and will try to met up if a common place is ever decided. I was thinking today, and since you're the administrator, how about pinning a game (travelling) info post up top that we all can use for info such as this? I'm still probably staying at Drury but think we should decide on a bar to meet at for pre-game (preferably walking distance). How do you think the Wellman's near Drake would work?

The "COYOTE RED BUS" will be in Des Moines for the Drake game. We bring food and set up quite a spread for each game. You're certain;y invited to be my guest and join us for fun and good commraderie. I just need some sort of headcount so we can bring appropriate amounts of food. You bring your own beverages whatever they may be.

When you say "there is hardly anything to be excited about at Drake". I agree with that statement when it comes to football. The other sports maybe a it's not so bad there. That is why I am surprised that so many are going to that game compared to more attractive options. I am sure the close proximity has a lot to do with it. I would never choose to go to a game at Drake (non scholly) before I would choose any of the other road games on the schedule. If I lived within an hour of Des Moines that would be a different story.

For starters, it's the season opener for our favorite team. Not every game is going to be big time. You go because you're a fan....period. The social aspect before the game is also a blast. Adds to the value.
Secondly, as I have stated in the past, this deal was cut years ago in an effort to get home games. Does it suck we go to Drake? Of course it does. But it had to be done in order to secure home games in Vermillion. Getting quality teams to come to South Dakota is nearly impossible. Deals have to be cut. Look at it from this angle....how excited do you think Oklahoma fans or Iowa State fans or Oregon fans are excited to play USD? Not every game can or will be "fun games"!!!
Thirdly, although I fully expect to win and hopefully easily, don't bet on it. There are far worse scholarship schools in FCS than Drake. They will go into this game thinking they can win, as they should. I will not be shocked if it's a game. Hell SDSU is playing Drake later in Brookings. Same reason.
Des Moines isn't that far away. Go to the game. Wear red and cheer the Coyotes on. I have been to practice and I think, but don't know for sure, that you're going to pleasantly surprised with our defense. I'm optimistic.
