Western put on a good show today at coastal. I watched about half of it I suppose. The thing I took away was I was pretty impressed with their OL play. I don't know how good coastal is on defense but the necks looked pretty efficient in O today

I wouldn't call WIU's win tonight a FBS win, rather a drubbing of a good FCS team who is clearly missing Moglia. I think I fell asleep late in the 2nd quarter. WIU looked good from what I saw and must have been even better in the 2nd half.

WIU had an incredible night tonight. Great finish to the non-conf.. I think our boys are going to have to be at the top of their game to win it.

Good win by Western but I was totally unimpressed with CC especially their offense!! Their D wasn't a lot better! Amazing they're moving up to FBS if this game was any indication although as we know the MVFC is ranked ahead of several FBS conferences. Western will be a challenge. GO YOTES!!!

What is going on with Coastal and the Sun Belt in general? If you look at the SB standings, you would expect an average MVFC team to beat, well, all of them. Why on earth would a good FCS team want to go to the SB? I just don't get it.
Western should be a fun on Saturday!

This is a huge game, no doubt. Western Illinois is playing as well as anyone in the league. They are good. We will be underdogs heading into the game, and rightfully so. We will play one of two ways...on our heels and somewhat distracted by the Coach Nielson return and hype surrounding it, or we will play as we have the first 3 games with a chip on our shoulder. My hope is the 2nd.
This is going to be a 60 minute plus old fashioned fist fight.

Sun Belt has always been the worst FBS conference, and since losing a bunch of members in 2013 they've filled their ranks with 2 once great FCS programs, 2 FCS programs with 6 playoff wins between them, 2 brand new football programs, and 2 sitting FBS programs so bad that they are not welcome back next year. Why would someone want to join the Sun Belt? It's one step closer to the top level. Greater chance of playing on national TV. As a fan it must be awful, and I'd never want such a setup unless the FBS implemented a true playoff that includes all conference champions.

I watched the entire Western / CC game and I am extremely impressed with Western. CC may not have impressed some on this board, but they had speed and an option game that tests a team's discipline. Western was very sound. This will be a tremendous opportunity for USD to face a senior dominant team that is sound in all three phases of the game. They are quite a bit better than Bowling Green in my opinion. The only exception to that is I do think BG had a couple receivers with a different gear than Western's top receivers. The Western Receivers are very good though - I do not think you will see them drop balls like the BG receivers did. Their OL is very impressive and physical. Their offensive philosophy is establish the run and off the run have a good play action and counter game. If they have success running inside/outside zone it will be a very long day for USD. In order for USD to win, USD must stop the run with their defensive front and LBs. When Western passes (usually with some sort of Play action - USD has to get pressure. I think USD will be able to do this and get to the QB hopefully getting not only sacks but also creating some turnovers.
USD will be able to score on this team. I would think on the low end USD scores 28 and the high end 42. Western definitely has the ability to score in that same range on USD. Can USD show up and be the more aggressive and confident team? If they do, I believe USD can get a victory against a very high quality opponent. Watching the USD players to this point I really think that is what we will see this coming Saturday.
I will also add that the Western HC has really done a great job transitioning this team to his style of play. Very good coach. Western will not beat themselves - USD will have to come into Macomb and take the game from them.
All the talk about Nielson is just a distraction for any player/coach that partakes. This game will be won based on preparation by the players and staff before the game and execution on game day. The hype stuff may fuel some players for a play or two, but then could become more a determent than advantage. Watching last year's Western/USD game I did not see any extra aggressiveness from their players. After the game I saw Nielson talking to several players with lots of hugs to go around. The fans are most likely the ones carrying the greatest amount of angst around over his departure. I am highly confident that Nielson and his staff will not be distracted by the situation.
USD 38 WIU 31

Had to post nothing here so everybody doesn't forget who we're playing this week and pays attention. Let's go Coyotes! TAKE the game!

Time for some analysis. My keys to this game.
1) Focus, Focus, Focus - If the Coyotes come out flat like in so many past MVFC road games then we can forget about this being a win. I don't think there is anything physically or schematically that worries me too much but if the Coyotes are the team standing like robots on the sidelines and Western is slapping back sides that will not be good. The Coyotes have to keep last year in their mind and not want to drop another game to these guys.
2) Do not let the kicking game be a huge liability. This is the most worrisome part of the game that could really hurt the chances. Instead of popping it up to only about the 30 yard line how about just kick a line drive right down the middle as those type of kicks can really mess up a return game and every now and then a bad bounce turns into a scramble for the ball.
Reason Western Illinois will win the game. If they keep their offense on the field and if they can run up the middle with success it makes it tough for the Yotes defense to remain fresh. If they keep the Coyotes off balance with a good play action game it will open up everything for their offense. The Leathernecks have to be able to stop the inside running game. They will be in very much trouble if they cannot do that. The D will have plenty to worry about but if they can make the Coyotes have to drive the entire field for their scores and don't turn the ball over they can definitely win the game.
Reason South Dakota will win the game. The Coyotes have to make Western one dimensional. The Coyotes have a good secondary and if they can cover WIU's receivers one on one it can allow an extra guy up front. On offense as was true last week and as was executed well last week have to do what works and not try to force a square peg through a round hole. By all means if the line is blowing the Necks off the ball then run it if it is working. If the line is at a stalemate and the interior is not open the Coyotes have to do what they did against Bowling Green and use the passes to the flats to make their yardage. Usually that area is open compared to other areas on the field.
For the Coyotes to win they have to play inspired and take the wind out of Western Illinois and keep their D on their heels like the Coyotes know how to do. I am probably doing this against my best judgement but I am taking the Coyotes to win 44-31 and much of the reason for the win will be because of the Coyotes offense wearing down the Leathernecks and owning the second half.

Opening line I saw earlier today had WIU favored by 3. Checked again and USD is favored by 1. That's quite the move.

Opening line I saw earlier today had WIU favored by 3. Checked again and USD is favored by 1. That's quite the move. As inconsequential as it may seem to be to many the line does matter. Towards the end of the week against Bowling Green the line got to as few as 3 I believe so the line was moving towards USD and of course they won. Now that the line is moving in USD's direction again hopefully that means good news. If the Coyotes can win this week they are going to be quite the force in FCS. Quite the force. Either way the Coyotes have 3 of 4 at home after the game this Saturday. Not that is will be easy but the Yotes can either right the ship or if they win and then win 3 of those games they will clinch a playoff spot before even getting to the end of season gauntlet. The way it is moving the UNI game will be very winnable so even if they need that as a backdrop game they can maybe get that 7th win in the UNI dome.
