Never want to see anyone get hurt but SIU's QB going down is karma for the SUI bench cheering while Streveler was laying on the field. Totally classless. They were dirty all game long. Hard clean hits and being a physical team is one thing. But the dirty hits like on Greenfield in the 3rd were horrible. How many personal foul penalties did they have? 5? They really cheered when Strev went down?

Yes I did and he looked lost and out of sync. Anyone can throw the ball up. Great one handed catch by the wide receiver in the end zone. Besides that all his throws off target. 11/18 passing isn't bad for first real action against good competition this year. And you don't get PI calls that consistently on errant balls. I thought his deep ball was exceptionally accurate. Didn't give him many middle of the field throws which was more open but always has more inherent risk. Probably trying to stay conservative by letting him throw safer deep sideline stretch plays which he does at a high level. On those plays he rarely threw where a safety was deep or he hit it before the safety was in range. One really bad forced pass while rolling right that he got away with. I bet he's the best backup in the MVFC and I'd take him over some of the starters. He's a run threat too but coaching wisely decided against taking the risk of seeing 3rd QB on the depth chart. Really his deep balls were accurate? All but one that was an amazing grab was either out of bounds or overthrown. Run threat didnt pull the ball once. He had plenty of chances since all they were doing was running the ball. Balls that he did throw in the middle were low and off target. They didnt throw the ball more because our defense was outstanding and didnt have too. Look at those 11 completions how many were WR screens. Also your PI calls everyone of those balls were not catchable!!!! Either overthrown or out of bounds. So I am happy they won but happier that strevler is going to be ok. And by the way when you throw sideline passes the saftey is never there because the middle is open.If that was the case then he made the wrong read by throwing it to the sideline so to say he avoided the saftey is funny to me.

Did you see some of the throws Simmons made today? Wow, that kid is good. The Yotes future is bright no matter who is at the helm. I still remember when he came in during the game against ISUr last season. He couldn't miss. Simmons went 13/30 in that game. He missed a lot.

The offense was very ineffective with Simmons yesterday. Only 211 yards in the 56 minutes where Simmons was QB. After finishing the last 6 yards of our opening drive, here is how things went:
9 plays 87 yards - TD 3 plays 5 yards - Punt 8 plays 36 yards - Downs 3 plays 4 yards - Punt 3 plays -8 yards - Punt 4 plays 38 yards - TD 3 plays 5 yards - Punt 3 plays 2 yards - Punt 3 plays 7 yards - Punt 4 plays 35 yards - Punt 11 plays 44 yards - TD
First full drive was very good, but afterwards the offense did not score again unless possession came in SIU territory, and more often than not the team went 3-and-out.
Simmons has a cannon for an arm, but clearly there is work to be done before we can really count on him. There was a 17-yard TD pass to Brooks and a 31-yard completion to Ramsey that were well placed, but those were his only two completions that went for more than 5 or 6 yards. PIs prevented at least a couple longer passes, but for the most part Simmons was off the mark on anything downfield. I'll be sweating profusely in Cedar Falls if Streveler isn't healthy.

I re-watched the first full drive with Simmons that was sustained by 3 pass interferences. 1st one to Jackson would have absolutely been caught by Shamar without the interference. 2nd one to Van Roekel went way over, I don't think he catches up to it without the interference. 3rd one to Samson in the end zone would have been on target if the defender isn't draped on him. I haven't looked at the others yet but at least 2 of the intereferences absolutely prevented long completions.

Always good to go back and re-watch the film. Here are my observations and opinions: * Overall theme of the day was overcoming adversity. Having three high-level defensive performers (all from the same position) suspended indefinitely has the potential to be very distracting. You could argue Rambo is one of the top cover corners in the MVFC. The team did not look distracted at all from start to finish - in fact I sensed a resolve by the defensive unit that I do not think they have had all year for a complete game. Throw in the shock of seeing your unquestioned #1 leader in Streveler on the turf with an injury, this team showed major mental toughness. * Let's put things in perspective on how far USD has come as a program. Think of all the players USD has lost coming into the year. Two starter level players did not return from last year for reasons I am unaware (corner and WR). Several DL and OL out for the year from injuries sustained in camp before the season. The leader of the defense at MLB - out for the year. Three suspensions of great cover corners before the game. Perhaps the best offensive player in Coyote history out during the first minutes of the game. All of that and USD routes a very talented SIU team 42-0. Wow. Great leadership, coaching, recruiting, and development of players on display yesterday. Impressive. * Simmons and the concept of backup QBs is always interesting. He has done what was needed to get wins every time he has stepped on the field. He missed some reads and some throws yesterday and against ILL St last year. He also threw some incredible balls - if you can't admit that you are not being objective. The 17 yard TD strike to Brooks was on the money and the perfectly thrown wheel route between two defenders to Ramsey was very skilled and perhaps the best of the day. We are comparing him to Streveler this year - incredible athlete, leader, runner, and now this year passer. Go back to last year and rewatch his early games throwing. He has gained valuable experience taking most of the snaps last year and has shown obvious improvement running the offense and knowing where to go with the ball. I believe Simmons with similar experience will improve. I also believe that the other QBs this staff have recruited will also be able to deliver. You need at least two game-ready QBs in this league. * USD's ability to run the ball (most of the game) made this game unwinnable for SIU. When USD can run the ball effectively, they will not be beaten this year IMO. The RBs ran hard and the "Heavy Package" is a solid change up to get blockers on the field. The OL won more than they lost in the blocking department. * Brett Samson is an absolute athletic freak. A guy his size that can do a standing backflip qualifies as that... He is improving every week and was a force blocking and on special teams yesterday. Keep your eyes on him. * The SIU turnovers will get the headlines, but the flip-side of that - USD ball security (no turnovers) was also decisive in this game. Good job by all runners as well as Simmons not forcing a ball when not needed. * For the most part very good tackling by USD stood out as improved over last week. * SIU was a very talented but undisciplined team. Their coach may be a great offensive mind, motivator, and recruiter, but his team came off as cheap, trash-talkers, that had no discipline. That cost their team too frequently and if not corrected will doom them to being a losing team more often than not. Their overall team speed and "pop" when hitting really stood out though. Impressive athletes. * Andrew Gray should be the defensive POW in the MVFC. Beyond the two pick sixes (one called back) - he made some crucial open-field tackles. * Even though the sacks were few for the USD defense - there was tremendous pressure put on the SIU QBs all game. The Defensive front is relentless. Hopkins got the start at DE yesterday - congratulations to him. Having good competition at positions for playing time will only make everyone better. * The targeting call and ejection of Cochrane was questionable. I would like to see the college game revisit the ejection rule. IMO there should not be an ejection unless the play can be confirmed, not just reviewed as "stands." * As deep as USD is at WR, they are a much better team when Cody Case is playing. Not having him on the field hurts the explosiveness of the team. He is a special player. Hopefully his deep-thigh bruise heals up so he can contribute down the stretch. Hopefully by NDSU. * USD has an incredible team and coaching staff. Get your friends and colleagues to come out to the game. It is fun and an exciting product. We can do better in that department. SDSU is a sellout, and if USD finishes strong and earns a home playoff game or two - the USD fans need to show up and be loud. Sellouts should be the norm not newsworthy oddities. * Everyone is talking about how hard the next few games are going to be for USD. If UNI, NDSU, and SDSU are honest with themselves, they know USD is going to be a tough and physical game for them. USD is going to beat UNI and eliminate them from the playoff contention.

Thanks obc, love your game reviews.
The things said negatively about Simmons are 2 things he can't control: 1) He's not Streveler and 2) He's not experienced, he'll get better with time, just like Streveler and every other great QB! IMHO

I did not realize that the Salukis were cheering when he went down. Was it just a couple of players or many that were cheering? I was too busy worrying about Streveler to even notice that. I didn't like the way Streveler was reacting after he got hurt. He started running off the field then all the sudden just kind of crumpled before he made the side line. I wasn't just worried about Chris not being in the game but I was worried about his health and well being. I just didn't like the way he reacted so I was very relieved to see him warming up to start the second half.

The offense did not click with him under center but considering how tough this offense would be to run it is expected that Simmons might struggle just a bit. I do agree that he will get better and better the more he is the starter but hopefully that won't start happening permanently until next year. I don't think Simmons was particularly accurate either. I am confident that he will be a good quarterback going forward but I don't think he played all that well and that is predictable considering what he was asked to do.

My opinion - the Dome seemed lifeless after the Streveler injury, and if felt like everyone was expecting/looking for doom. Even when it wasn't actually there. That seems to have spilled over to this thread.
The offense didn't click when Simmons was in there? Really? You thought the coaches would open up the playbook for a 2nd string QB thrust into his first action of the year? He managed the game - which was what was asked of him. Zero turnovers. Lots of runs. Did you notice how the SIU backup did? Was that what you were looking for?
Although not a popular topic for fanboards, I thought the refs did a fantastic job of being in control in this game (a night-and-day difference from the ISU game). We had 118 yards of penalties (including some dumb ones) and SIU had 84 penalties for about 500 yards. These guys were in control, picked up flags when appropriate, and were not in over their head - even with the questionable attitudes from SIU.

A person has to realize how tough it is for any QB to come into a situation like that, both mentally and physically. I agree with gopheryote 100%; he did what he was asked to do: manage the game and he did this very well. The drive that culminated in Fredrick's touchdown, all on the ground, was very sharp, and, again to echo gopheryote, zero turnovers. On the extremely positive side...how about that defense, especially the dbacks with a special shoutout to the corners. I thought Armstead and Collins played extremely well against some tough receivers. Armstead's pick when he turned his hips, turned on the jets and made a great diving int was tremendous. That burst of speed was very impressive. On its own merit, one of the better defensive plays of the year. We seem to be just fine there. I know it's cliché, but next man up.

I'm guessing with strev coming off the field and the way he fell had to do with him realizing that he needed to go down on the field to give Simmons more time to warm up. If he had just run off the field Simmons would have had to go in cold - and or we would have had to take a time out. By going down on the field of play he was trying to by time for the team.
