Reviewed replay of SIU's 45-24 win at Indiana St on their homecoming.
Few quick observations:
ISU threw a long TD pass on 3rd play of game where the safety was beat and another long pass in first half that set up short TD. Bodes well for Coyotes offense!
SIU's So. QB threw 3 ints in the game 2 on swing passes 1 that went for short TD. Gets nervous feet with pressure. He ran several QB draws for about 10-15 yds each. Didn't see him run any option plays. They throw a lot of swing/bubble screen passes, mixing in running plays off tackle and on occasion will play action and throw deep.
They had one bad snap on a punt that resulted in a short ISU FG.
ISU helped them out with a couple of turnovers and a short field and some ill advised penalties.
So Coyotes need to tackle well especially on short passes, play turnover free, cut way down on penalties and be opportunistic. And Yotes need a solid run game! GO YOTES!!!

Yotes have been very good on bubble screens and containing the outside this season. They actually stopped it against ILUr, they just gave up too many yards on inside runs.

I think the Coyotes need to bounce back in a big way and I think they will do so. I am happy that this game is in Vermillion and I think we will see a more focused Coyote team. Southern Illinois does pose a very big threat in their passing game. The secondary has been inconsistent this year so the Coyotes will need to figure out how to pressure their quarterback. It would be nice this week if the Offensive Line could give Streveler one of those games where he can stay in the pocket most of the time. If the Coyotes struggle in the game and barely win or god forsake lose it will not bode well going forward. I don't think that happens and I see the Coyotes with a 59-21 win.

I didn't think we gave up much on inside runs unless you are counting cut backs. I could be mistaken...Monday nights are when I go to bed early and re-watch the game.

True, I was meaning they contain the outside run well by stretching the play out. That was VERY CONFUSING...to say the least! If you think we gave up yards "up the middle", you need to re-watch the game. I'll take the yards they gave up, up front, any day. The front are studs! The "Shopwreckers" baby!!! Imho, they're anchoring our defense. Anyways...not sure if I should be discussing this in this thread so am going to finish my post under the ILState thread. It kind of sounds like you may be new to football...if not, don't take me wrong...you're post just ditz a strength of ours that are playing lights out thru pure effort...if you are new...be careful of the terms you use...if you meant the outside is good at stretching a play out...then say that.

No I am not new to football and have been posting here for 6 years. They gained most yards off tackle which is considered inside compared to a sweep. I know your son plays DT, don't take it personally.

I did stop re watching the game at the end of the 3rd because I had a really bad connection but not taking anything personally as I look at everything ad a team effort and never call anybody out. Like I said, I think 3rd down will be disected rather thoroughly.

Like I said, I think 3rd down will be disected rather thoroughly. I agree with you that 3rd down efficiency was a huge aspect last week that must be addressed going forward. Defensively, that has been one of the few weak spots so far this year. Not being able to get off the field in 3rd & medium to long situations has been a recurring issue our roads games for sure. At WIU during their comeback, constantly we got them to 3rd and medium or long and we couldn't make a play to force a punt. Same thing happened at ISUr last week, as it seemed we would get them to 3rd & 8 and then they would get a matchup with their slot WR on one of our young LBs and get 15 yds and move the chains. Offensively, we have to be able to protect better moving forward. Our spread offense is not meant to max protect, its meant to spread opposing defenses out and force them to either lighten the box so we can run it, or make them show their hand when bringing pressure so we can throw into where they are blitzing from, i.e. the Youngstown game when we threw the hot slant to Shamar for the long TD to open the 2nd half. If teams can consistently rush 4 and get pressure like ISUr did, then we will struggle to be consistent on offense. We have a great coaching staff, and a great group of players...so I foresee corrections and adjustments being made on both sides of the ball moving forward into this weekend. Big game in the dome before a tough road stretch at UNI and fargo. Yotes will bring their A-game and get the W.

The last several weeks I have taken some time to visit our opponents fan forums. Not besmirching any of these other boards, but the fan interest and participation along with the format of our board is head and shoulders above what I have seen the last 4 weeks. Today I visited the Salukis board and as has been the case in previous weeks found the available posts to be thoughtful and informative. One of the Saluki posters aptly noted how costly the USD penalties were against Illinois State and noted that we are one of the most penalized teams in the Valley and could potentially beat ourselves. Hard to argue and definitely an area the Yotes need to shore up if they want to make a deep run this season. Hopefully this weekend we see a nice sign of bigger and better things yet to come. Lots of football left to play.

I hope the coaches escalated these bad calls to the MVFC.

Bob said on show at OLC last night that he spoke with the commissioner about the officiating inconsistencies in Normal.
