Usually at this point in the week the "Game Notes" links are up, but nothing yet. I went to the MVFC web site to see what they had up and noticed that they have a story entitled "Arens sparks Coyotes in home opening victory" along with stories about, NDSU women's basketball and SDSU golf. Anyone else find this interesting considering this is a website for a football conference? edit: Here's the link: www.valley-football.org/ Games Notes are up. Still think its strange a football conference posts Summit League news. It's probably automated. It shows NDSU basketball stuff too

Be careful, Coyotes! Rabbits may appear to be cute and cuddly,.... .... But they are not to be trusted!..... ...We must reject their duplicity... ...Attack without remorse.... ...and terminate them with extreme prejudice....

This is off the current topic, 59 years to be exact, but I'm sitting here looking at a program from the 1958 USD vs SDSC Dakota Days game. A few interesting tidbits: USD's roster comprised of 33 players, the largest weighing in at 215 pounds, SDSC (actual name) had a larger roster, carrying 34 players, the giant being a 248 pounder who wasn't a starter, USD's starting offensive tackles both weighed 210 with the offensive line averaging 195, SDSC's offensive tackles were 210 and 197 and, unbelievably the guards were 179 and 188. Not sure what year platoon football became a thing. Late 50's early 60's? I think it's safe to say that neither of these squads would fare very well this Saturday. Any questions on any of this stuff just ask away and I'll do my best to answer. I wasn't at this game...but I could have been. Wouldn't have known what was going on, but some would probably say I still don't. Crazy to think that at 100 or more pounds heavier that most the lineman are probable as fast if not faster than the lineman 50-60 years ago. The Yotes starting lineman would barely qualify in size to be safeties in today's world. Very true about the linemen. Most wide outs and defensive backs today are bigger than those guys were. Taking it a step further, no running back on either team was over 170 pounds.

I think most neutral observers and Jacks fans will tend to lean towards the "what have you done for me lately" approach. In this conference you can't do that. One of the best things that could have happened for the Coyotes was for the Jacks to get a mediocre win against Illinois State, one in which they were not dominant. Those types of games can sort of be swept under the rug since they ultimately ended up being a win. They don't have a feeling of needing to bounce back like they would after a loss. For the Jacks that snapped a streak of playing excellent football. Not that they were bad like they were against UNI or Youngstown but their level went down a bit.
Speaking of UNI and Youngstown it's not like it was 2 years ago that SDSU was bad against those teams but was just a few weeks back. The Jacks are playing well but they do have the recent history of throwing out a stinker from time to time. If those two teams can have that kind of success they did I would think in the dome the Coyotes would have a good chance as well. Lets face it if one team does not play a good game that team could easily be beaten in this game by 4 touchdowns. That is how lethal each of these offenses are.
The huge elephant in the dome will be the Coyotes secondary vs the Jacks passing attack. That is one of those things where having home field advantage might not matter quite as much if Christian has time to pass. I think the Coyotes front will do well against the Jacks rushing attack so I believe there are going to be many footballs in the air on Saturday. Against NDSU I was actually quite happy with the offensive approach that the Coyotes had in that game. I was tracking the stats of how much the Coyotes passed vs ran on first down and it was not even close. They passed probably 4 times as often but they needed to do that to have success and had well over 400 yards against undoubtedly one of the elite defenses in the FCS. It ended up being the case that the Coyotes couldn't even really attempt to establish a running game because they were behind most of the game. If the defense could have just been average I think the Yotes O becomes much more effective.
The Coyote secondary was pretty bad against NDSU but they did ok against UNI and did well against SIU as well. People will say that they were only good because it was against the SIU second string QB but what I saw they were very impressive and made athletic plays that would have been made even against the starter. Obviously that is the biggest question mark but it is not like the secondary has been horrible all year.
BREAKING NEWS, I heard Mick Garry on the radio and he picked the Coyotes to win, or in his words he said he would give the Coyotes the edge. I gotta hand it to Mick for once. It's easy to go with the consensus and just make the easy pick. I thought he was going to take the easy way out and pick the Jacks. Matt Zimmer barely paused when he made his pick. He said the Jacks all the way. He lied to the world though. 3 weeks ago he said that the Jacks would win 2 of their last 3. He should have picked the Coyotes for that to come through. That will be Karma for Mr. Zimmer but I knew he would backtrack on those comments if the Jacks had won the first two. I knew it.

Add in the fact that this coaching staff has a way of bringing players up to speed very quickly and I think we all should be pretty excited for Saturday. I might be swaying to the side of saying the better coaching staff (chess moves) wins. BOOM!!! Shakalaka!!!

Going back to the football teams of yesteryear, I would agree that teams were definitely lighter back then, at least in the line positions. My feeling, however, is that at least in the 1960s the play was rougher than today's game. I distinctly remember the noise of helmets and shoulder pads clacking against each other way back in the stands.
Our student cheer in those days? "Blood makes the grass grow!". Literally true in most every game.

Also, there were of lot of things you could do blocking wise that have been outlawed. Most (all) were probably wise decisions by rulemakers.

I still can't believe this is a thing: It is kinda cheesy and I'm not sure when it started, maybe it was 2013 when the video was made, or if it is even still a thing. This I do know, starting in 2012 we began our string of making the playoffs. Soooooo, maybe flannel Friday isn't/wasn't all bad.
*yes I'm fully aware that we haven't gone all the way in the playoffs or won it all.
**yet,
