If you listen to the Sioux Falls media Augustana is already in the Summit. Serious. I was watching the sports and they were talking about USD softball and the Summit tournament and they segued into the spot about Augustana softball by referring to them as "future Summit League member". So it appears the decision has been made, except they can't begin the transition until they get a conference invite, and Augustana set the timetable for getting a conference invite in the 2020-2021 school year. We're almost two years away still. Talk about dragging your feet. Of course, having to scale back plans and settle for building a 300 meter outdoor track just screams D1 ready.
A lot of talk coming out of St. Paul amongst the Tommie alums that they are getting lawyered up to petition the NCAA for immediate transition to D1 status given their circumstance. Yes, the NSIC is right there for a D2 transition, but there is no indication they are interested in being used as a 4 year pass through by St. Thomas.
As for the UND bashing, North Dakota won the hockey national championship in 2016, Big Sky in football in 2016, Big Sky basketball and an NCAA invite in 2017, etc. and on down the line. They have done just fine in D1. Their struggles the last two years in hockey have more to do with Berry running out of Hakstol's recruits.

St. Thomas was a founding member of the NCC. We would be getting the band back together, indeed.

Here is the impact of Hockey on FCS athletic budgets. These expenses are from 2017 the most current available. This came from the link below. You can find it for about any school. It includes all expenditures for all sports. The FCS median is 15.6 mill. Both Augie and UST have some fund raising to do to Get to the middle Total budgets UND. 26.7 mill D1 hockey FCS Maine. 20.9 D1 Hockey FCS NDSU. 28.1 FCS USD. 18.9 FCS SDSU. 20.9 - FCS. The same as Maine but Maine has to pay for a hockey team too. Coaches Salaries all sports UND: 4.54 million MAINE: 3.45 mill NDSU: 4.63 million USD: 3.24 mill - total expenditures close to Maine but Maine has to pay the Hockey coaches too SDSU: 3.8 mill travel and game expenses UND. 3.77 mill MAINE. 2.48 NDSU. 5.12 mill - probably lots of playoff and national championship game expenses USD. 2.26 mill - About the same as Maine but Maine has to fly a hockey team around and host home games too SDSU. 3.9 mill Hockey will bring your budget to the top of the FCs schools but leave you with average to below average money for other sports. UND is a nice bench mark to use when comparing to programs that still have the decision to keep some sports in D2 while moving hockey to D1. I agree the D1 Hockey all sports model at this budget level comes up short. Pointing that out is not extending any disrespect to the programs that have chosen it. Obviously at this level the budget dollars remaining after funding a D1 hockey team leaves you with a generous D2 budget or average to below average FCS budget. I got got the information from this link. It is very informative cafidatabase.knightcommission.org/fcs

Does anyone really think that St Thomas's athletic facilities are better than what Augustana has to offer? There football stadium capacity is only 5,000 and the basketball capacity is 2,000. Not quite D1 ready.

The XDSUs fund baseball and wrestling which neither of the UXDs do, so that has to add to their expenses although I don't know how that would compare to funding a hockey team. SDSU also has equestrian, but I have no idea how expensive that sport is or how it's funded.

Per the SDBOR FY 18 Athletic Funding Statement , the SD Ag College funds 3 sports that USD doesn't have with the indicated amounts spent for fiscal year 2018: wrestling - $658,609, baseball - $611,072 & equestrian - $452,334. They also have a stadium lease payment of $2,587,732. These 4 items total over $4,300,00 per year of expenses to fund their athletic department that USD doesn't have.

Not quite D1 ready. They play hockey at St Thomas Ice Arena, Capacity 1,400. Attendance 165 at the last game this season against Hamline. They lost. They will need a larger larger hockey arena Bemidji plays at the new Sanford Center. A nice arena

Not quite D1 ready. Not at all, but in the Twin Cities there is no shortage of acceptable interim homes while they build their own D1 facilities.

Augie doesn’t need to build anything. Their facilities are set. In the meantime UST can build, with their unlimited funds, a hockey arena, football stadium and basketball arena. All of that to become a very small D1 school, like Augie. Bring them on but Augie is not going away.
I don’t believe it’s either/or. Augie is in. UST is speculative. They need 20 million/year budget to have the bare bones funding of Maine and Und. They need what, 500 million or so for facilities? They need a waiver to skip D2 with viable D2 & D3 options out there.
It should be interesting watching it unfold. Not only the Augie UST situations but the accelerating deterioration of athletics at UND. Can they reverse their collapsed hockey, football and BB programs with a budget on life support? If so a D1 all sports UST has hope too.

That would make the league more interesting. The Summit Womens BB is a competitive league. NDSU pays top dollar for their coaches, tops in the Dakotas with or without hockey, so they haven't been getting their moneys worth in that program. Wouldn't you hate to see that easy win go out the window with their coaching change?

I think both the Yotes and the Jacks would wish the bottom feeding Bizzzuuhhnn pathetic womens bb team would somehow get their RPI above 300. Both of the SD are getting it done, schedule good ooc games, win there fair share, and then comes along the Summit League schedule and rpi's plummet taking away at large bids and 12 or better seeds in the NCAA tournament. What you fail to understand is college athletics is cyclical, programs such as UND will eventually get their house in order and have success again, the ndsu women's bb is the exception to that rule. What has it been for you guys two decades of sucking soon to be a quarter of a century.

What continues to be very interesting is where the funds come from according to the regents report. The following is the major sources in $millions Source USD SDSU General Funds 4.5 3.8 Inst. Overhead 2.6 0.6 Gen. Activity 3.0 2.5 Gate 1.0 4.7 Corporate 0.1 1.9 Donations 1.2 2.9 The other sources are either small or somewhat similar. The data indicates a different philosophy toward funding. USD relies much more on internal sources and SDSU relies much more on external resources. Augie with a smaller enrollment and far less research to generate overhead would have to follow a model more like SDSU's of relying on gate, donations and corporate, as would St. Thomas.
