I'm guessing plans change. From what I have read they are building an on campus rink and will have a program on the ice in 2023 and the rest of the athletic department will make the D1 move around 2030. So my guess is they start a D1 hockey program and find that is a great niche for them and they give up on moving the rest of the sports to D1.
I actually think this is a really good move by them and they will have success.

Sounds like they are putting the D1 move on the back burner and will focus on hockey instead. I guess instead of trying to turn into the next Creighton, they are going to try to turn into the next Mankato.

I agree with Yote 53 on it being a good move by Augie, or at least a better move than moving all their other sports to D1. I wonder what the Title IX effect of the move will be as I assume they will need to either add additional women's scholarships or cut men's scholarships (perhaps even cut a men's sport such as wrestling). With regards to an on campus arena, I wonder if it will be strictly a hockey arena or if they will also use it for basketball.

If Augie does this AND moves the rest of their sports to D1 they will have just made USD and SDSU look foolish. I don't think they have the capacity or resources to do both but if they pull it off I will have to give them credit.

Probably a wise choice for Augie. Also, as a hockey fan, I'm looking forward to having a college team to root for without feeling guilty for supporting a common opponent in other sports. More than a few times, I've found myself cheering for the Sioux in hockey. It feels wrong...

Lots of hockey fans in this SF metro area. I think the success the Mavs have had in Omaha, for years before the D-1 move in other sports, is probably a good model for them. SF is smaller than Omaha, of course. But when you look at all the support the Stampede have here, .... people will show up IMO.
I also agree that they might have to cut a men's team or two for Title IX. They might not have to do that until (IF) they attempt to go D-1 in all their sports, though. Omaha controversially dropped Wrestling and Football, but only when they were transitioning all sports to D-1. And they were a really good wrestling school.
With Omaha, they started hockey in 1997, but didn't go D-1 for fourteen years, in 2011. Omaha isn't at a Creighton level in basketball, either. Maybe the best option for Augie is to stay D-II and have a really popular Hockey program?

St Thomas recently waltzed from D3 to D1 in hockey. I'm sure Augustana can get a hockey conference invite if they show an investment. The Augustana-Summit conversation isn't even worth having. They are soooo far away. I found that blog anticipating a Western Illinois exit as a bit odd. WIU is in the Summit until the state shuts it down, which does not seem to be coming in light of the doom from a few years back. If the state can find a way to keep funding Chicago State's athletics then WIU is in the Summit.

I watch very little but I've always been partial to pulling for the weird schools that are D1 in hockey but nothing else. Like, Bemidji and St Cloud have teams? How is that possible? What the heck is a Ferris State? Who decided there is a Colorado College? That sort of thing. That being said, Augustana will not be winning me over. I could see myself at one of their games rooting for the other guys though because live hockey is so much fun.

Mankato, St Cloud State, Duluth & Bemidji State, all current members of the NSIC (the same conference as Augie), have D1 hockey.

They can remain in D2 in everything and still have D1 hockey. The NCAA doesn't offer a D2 championship in hockey so D2 schools are allowed to play up and compete at the D1 level. They don't need to meet a minimum for D1 sports. College hockey needs more programs. They will be an automatic for an offer to the WCHA where Mankato and Bemidji play.

I was never a part of the old NCC days so the Augie hate doesn't flow through me like it probably should. I guess I've always considered them a little sister school that didn't really deserve my attention lol.

Their public campaign for D1 has made me dislike them. Just shut up and do it if you are for real. This has been in the headlines for years now and all we have is that they might be adding hockey and looking at everything else 5 years from now. St Thomas made the move from a lower division in like 5 minutes. I'm still suspicious that Augustana has zero intention of going D1 and just wanted the attention. I am mad at everyone for humoring them.

I actually think this is a really good move by them and they will have success. Actually, I think they are going to D1 hockey to build corporate relationships which will be used to move all sports to D1. Sioux Falls market averages 6,500 for USHL, which helped build a hockey fanbase for them exploit. They are a no brainer for CCHA conference with - Bemidji State, Bowling Green, Ferris State, Lake Superior State, Michigan Tech, Minnesota St, Northern Michigan, and St. Thomas. But, look at the nonconference teams available you have NCHC teams (Omaha, Denver, UND) and Big Ten (U of M, Wisconsin, MSU, Michigan, Ohio St, and Penn St. - OK let's be honest they only have a shot at Ohio St, Wisconsin and MSU - no way Min, Mich or Penn St travel) and Ind - ASU. But, what other Mens D1 Revenue Sport are you going to get any of the P5 schools to travel. I think its a great move by Augie and in short order about 2030 as state above, you see them in the Summit League. I always hoped the Yotes would make the jump to hockey, because of the revenue potential but I think Title IX might have held them back not sure. Now the fight for SF market gets interesting. Plus with Augie going D1 hockey you are getting close to Summit League Hockey - DU, UND, Omaha, St. Thomas and Augie... I don't see affiliate schools complaining too much SCSU, UMD, CC. Plus, message board rumors are already swirling about how long before WMU and Miami get swapped with BSU, St. Thomas and Minnesota St.
