Kent State board reporting that Neilson is on campus today. If he is on campus there, then it's pretty much a done deal... Was a fun two years... My enthusiasm for the 2018 season is diminishing... we get excited about a new coach, buy into their philosophy and outlook for the team they are coaching, then they move on. This coaching carousel we find ourselves on every year or two is really making it hard on the athletes, supporters, and boosters... Unless we retain one of the current coaches, you are looking at another year of the athletes (who remain) learning a new offense and trying to win games in the Valley in the mean time. Athletes are going to look at USD as a school that can't keep the coaches that brought them in and not want to play here. Herbster is the only stable factor in the entire equation. He has been amazing at finding talented coaches, but that has to be exhausting for him as well. #InHerbsterwetrust I know, speaking for myself, that I will not be getting too attached to any new coach that comes in... why go through all that heartbreak over and over again. Sorry, needed to vent... Just feeling deflated right now after such a great season (despite what CF says). It was a good season, just not a great one. I don't like to casually thrown around the word "Great".

Didn't I read somewhere that Urban Meyer always wanted to live in South Dakota? Hell NO! Also, they are having a great time at our expense on this topic over on the bunny boards. Why would we care what the bunny people say or think? For the most part they're morons with self esteem problems.

He wouldn't be gathering information, if it was a business as usual week.

Stopping by to see what news this board has on Coach Nielson. [The topic has been discussed on SDSUfans.com but I don't see where the "having a great time at (USD) expense" is occurring" as asserted by usdtator. Geez, usdtator, you must have better things to do than inventing stuff like that!]. Having followed the news of Coach Nielson's teams over the years starting with his first national title at UM-Duluth, I predicted he'd have the Coyotes in the playoffs in his third year. I was wrong. Took him just two. His body of work justifies attracting attention by programs who pay more than coaches are paid in the MVFC. If he jumps ship to Kent State, the Coyotes program appears to have a lot returning for next season and will be an attractive program to a lot of good coaches looking to move up.

Anybody know how or if Nielson is connected to Kent State AD Joel Nielson? Would assume that when Bob was at UMD, part of that time as AD, they probably had a working relationship.

Really think Nielson and his staff are going to stay. That is not saying that Kent St does not have some very attractive qualities that could work out for him. I also think he is a good enough coach to make them a MAC contender.
Here is why he will stay: * Bob and his staff have come to SD not to almost turn around the program and win the MVFC, but to actually do it. They have poured so much blood sweat and tears into this program that he will want to see it through to the conclusion. * This year showed that his system can work in the MVFC and he did it with an astounding amount of young players playing in key spots. There are more playmakers that redshirted and more that will certainly come in next year and play from this recruiting class. The defense will get better with more maturity and depth and our running game will improve alongside our passing productivity - again due to more strength up front. * Bob didn’t come here from WIU to job hop quickly - I think he values the long game - sees the investment the University is making and knows he can utilize those investments to build a champion. He wants a championship and knows it can be done at USD.
Will he eventually move on for a big payday - I do think eventually he may, but it will be for a bigger step up than Kent St can offer.
We will know soon.

I also think, however, that Kent State is a place where coaching careers go to die. Might not matter to Nielson at his age, but it could affect some of the younger staff he would bring along with him. Monsen, O'Boyle and Middleton aren't necessarily wedded to him I don't think and in any case would love to see them stay. I know Middleton coached under O'Boyle at Chadron so they had a previous connection.

Reading the Western IL Blogs, they believe that he left Western IL because of budget cuts, no stipend funding and lack of facilities improvement. He doesn't have any of those issues at USD.
The State of IL is a real mess and there has been discussion about having to close 1-2 of the state colleges due to budget constraints. Who can blame him for leaving.
With that being said, who among us wouldn't take a 2-3X pay raise in our own jobs?
I hope that this doesn't get drawn out.

I sincerely hope you're right, but I think he's gone.

If this is about money, how about this angle? The SDRS is the top rated state system in the nation and he would be eligible for full benefits at age 65. He has been having a nice chunk of change pulled out of his USD earnings every month and would be guaranteed a solid check for the rest of his life. A person simply can't beat the investment and rate of return on your money. Nielson hasn't been here long enough to be vested in the system though. I know younger posters don't think about this stuff, but as a person grows older things like this begin to factor in.

One nice thing about the head coach going forward is that he has very little pressure.
Since the Coyotes just made the playoffs and even won a game that is all that is required for every 10 year period. Winning a conference title and beating the Jacks doesn't even need to happen. As long as the team keeps clean and gives is the old college try that will be the only requirements needed.
