Assuming Bob leaves, I wonder if we lose the entire staff similar to his departure from WIU? Bad enough losing the HC, but the assistants going and recruiting would be devastating. Maybe Herbster tries to retain an assistant to be head coach (like how WIU seemed to offer Yelk before bungling the whole thing). If we keep an assistant to be HC then I'd expect to retain a couple as assistants. Otherwise, I'd expect a completely new staff. I would rather that be the case (retaining an assistant). One reason is that I want Matt Middleton to stay as long as possible. He is a great coach and a solid recruiter.

I was thinking about this as soon as these rumors started swirling yesterday and I just heard the same thing mentioned on KWSN. Amy Williams prior to leaving was very emotional in her last press conference or two. Same exact thing from Nielson at about the same time in the year. I don't remember Craig Smith getting that way unless I missed it. Nilson talked about Streveler and might have disguised his real reason for being emotional with Chris. If he is gone he probably knew at that point that he was leaving or at the least a very good chance of it. USD would have to double his salary more than likely to keep him if the offer is real from Kent State. If Kent State offered than it is time to say good bye. This is the third straight year that a high profile USD coach is either leaving or rumored to be leaving. It's like as soon as a coach shows a pulse at USD than they are gone. I can't think of any other schools that have this issue as often lately as USD has had to deal with this. Welcome to small time Division I. When we lose, we get a new coach, and when we win, we get a new coach. Credit Herbster for this as he has made some incredible hires (Plitzuweit could very well be next in a few years) and created a solid athletic program. But hope he doesn't get lured away, either. You're on the money. If we ever retain a coach for a long time it will likely be because they can't get over the hump, or they're a local/alum. Typically I'd expect we keep the winners for more than 2 stinking years but Bob is a special case given his two MVFC turnarounds in 5 years. Herbster has been dynamite with his hires. I'm certain he could move up whenever he chooses, but his roots in Vermillion might be worth more than a raise right now. I don't remember how old his kids are. Maybe once they go off to college he'll look around. If Bob is gone I have the utmost confidence that Herbster will get us a capable replacement to continue our upward trend.

Is this why we haven't heard from TBSD lately? Does he know but won't say anything?

I’ve thought about this situation a lot in the last day. I was playing a game of cards last night when I looked down at my phone to see a few college buddies and work colleagues texting me about the FootballScoop post. Obviously, i was caught off guard. But now, I’ve realized that this is the price of becoming a competitive program. These are the types of bumps in the road we will have to endure in order to grow.
I suspect that Bob probably has not talked to Kent State. But, I have a feeling someone has probably reached out to KS on his behalf in order to draw the attention of the USD administration. Herbster is pretty savvy - if they were not already discussing Bob’s contract after the playoff birth (much less win) they definitely are discussing it now. I am very confident in Herbster’s ability to navigate this situation. Regardless, as noted in previous posts, every hire by Herbster has been a slam dunk.
If Bob leaves, I cannot really blame him. He’s made our program much better in the last two years. I am so thankful that he made the difficult decision to take a job at a different school in the same conference. Everyone has a price and college sports is a vicious cycle.
The thing I am concerned about is that this whole situation seems so much like the speculation we were seeing in the Western Illinois fan base two years ago - it’s almost erie.

My feeling is that if Nielson does leave it will either be Schlafke or a brand new coaching staff. I don't really want to go back to boring run first football because I think a run first team will never get past NDSU because if you can't beat them at their game you have to try something else which is the Bob Nielson angle.

What makes me a little irritated is all the WIU fans that came here and told us he would leave us in 2 years. They might be right.

Maybe he goes and maybe he doesn't. Either way I don't think he'd be their first choice and a lot of this is speculation. I'm guessing it would be Warinner who has the deep Ohio roots and the instate recruiting chops as do the others mentioned. Some of you seem to be reading a lot into various things. I know for a fact the staff is all out of town recruiting at the present time.

Here is a thought for you - not even Kent State wants Ohio native Bo Pelini. Ooof.

That Gaskins clown has zero credibility. Nothing more than a media nobody trying to stir the pot to make a name for himself. Don't even bother with his drivel.
