Others Seriously Considered (Strong CBI/CIT candidates in order): Indiana, Northeastern, Wyoming, Colorado, Memphis, Marshall, Illinois St., Georgetown, UNLV, Bradley, Utah Valley, Toledo, Southern Illinois, Fresno St., ETSU, South Dakota, Furman
Maybe we'll end up playing Tre Dickerson and Georgetown...?

Two big differences between the NIT and the WNIT:
1. NIT=32 teams / WNIT=64
2. NIT AQ=Reg. Season Champ. / WNIT AQ=Highest finishing conference member (after NCAA picks)
If the NIT was like the WNIT in these two ways, you would see a lot more mid-major participation in it. Our men's team appears to be outside the bubble according to projections this year, which is too bad. We should make some noise in the CIT or CBI, though.

I thought it was weird that there were so many mid-majors listed above USD, given the fact that we were ranked #6 in College Insider's top-25. Then I looked at the date of the mid-major poll, and realized that it has not been updated since Monday.... Here are the mid-major teams (from conferences defined by College Insider as mid-majors) that are ranked above USD in NYC Bucket's NIT Bracketology: (and their C.I. ranking) BYU #17 Belmont #16 Northeastern #18 Illinois State (not ranked) Bradley (not ranked) Utah Valley #22 Toledo #27 Southern Ill #33 ETSU #12 USD #6I'm sure we drop in rank after losing the championship game to another top-10 mid-major team, but this projection seems excessively low to me.

Based on the Bracketology right now:
Men's SDSU #13 seed playing Gonzaga in Boise, ID (same matchup as last year) Men's USD middle-seeded in CBI or CIT
Women's SDSU #11 seed playing Iowa in Knoxville, TN Women's USD high-seeded in WNIT
Based on my guess, none of the other men's teams will see a post-season. Based on my guess, WIU women will be a middle-seed in the WNIT Based on my guess, ORU or Denver will make the WBI, not both.

So what you're saying is that they really have little to no interest in getting the best teams into their tournaments. The NIT seems like it's also catering to the power 5 crowd which somewhat surprises me.

Teams we have played in the past in the WNIT that have made/will make the NCAA this year: Drake (MVC Champs) Northern Colorado (Big Sky Champs) Iowa Minnesota Nebraska (inside the Bubble) Creighton (inside the bubble)
Area teams that won't qualify this year: North Dakota Iowa State Northwestern Wisconsin Illinois Colorado
Likely first/second round WNIT matchups for USD(my opinion): first round: Northern Iowa Kansas State SIU Edwardsville Southern Illinois Missouri State
second round: Wyoming Colorado State UW-Milwaukee

There are only 32 spots, and it seems like regular season champs that lose in their conference tournaments are the only mid-majors that get in. Since we didn't win the regular season, we are S.O.L. I think we will do some damage in the CIT/CBI, though.

Good find! In that prediction we are the 2nd-highest seeded mid-major behind BYU. (Which is a major program in a small conference) Also this projection has 11 mid-majors out of the 32-team field. I added it to the list in the OP

That NIT prediction has us seeded 6, so our first round opponent might be Georgia, Mississippi State, LSU or Oregon, but I could see them moving us up or down in seed in order to play someone more regional, like Boise State Or Nebraska.....

At present you are the strongest of the 6 seeds in this prediction. I could easily see you moving to a five seed when one of the teams above you loses in their conference tournament. (As crazy as it sounds, you are actually closer to Mississippi State and LSU geographically than you are to Boise State according to mapquest.com) Also, IPFW is hosting a game in the CIT. www.gomastodons.com/news/2018/3/9/mens-basketball-to-host-cit-game-on-monday-on-cbs-sports-network.aspx

Vermont and UL-Lafayette losing today will probably cost the Coyotes an NIT bid

About the geography thing, it's kind-of relative. As you go west, things are farther apart. Another way to look at is the number of teams in the east and south means we are less likely to be matched up with a Mississippi or Louisiana. Who knows, though. Sometimes they throw geography out the window.
